While Im going TOD im not overly keen on the TOD hat, is it possible to tweak other film styles with a hint of TOD?
Not too bothered about my budget for a nice fedora, this still by far will work out alot less than my other costumes have cost.
Im UK based so guess possibly the Poet, but what would work best.
Thanks for any help

Well...that's a bit vague. What elements of the TOD hat are you looking to borrow? A modern Poet would probably pull off the bridge hat pretty well.

Vague yes sorry, I really like the raiders fedora. But TOD was one of my fav films as a kid so wanted to go that route as a costume. I wondered if its possible to relax the pinch, and use some of the angles of the TOD, I believe the ribbon is wrong but how noticable would that really be?
Ive never had a fedora let alone bashed one, been reading lots but confussed which to buy to suit my needs. Or just go full blown raiders and keep the rest T

Get an open crown hat and crease it however you like, problem solved.
Taking the sharp crease out of a Raiders like hat is basically not really recommended. The Raiders hat is kind of a caricature of a hat, and creasing it as tightly as it appears in some scenes on screen is not good for the felt. That's why there are no off the rack hats creased as such. If, you got a hold of a second hand hat that had such a crease in it, you could relax it a bit, but there would be a noticeable line in the felt.

Hey
I never normally post but being from the UK I thought I'd let you know about the import and purchasing problems I've had.
I bought three low to mid range fedoras. A Todds costume downtowner, a Christy's adventurer and an akubra fed iv.
Of them all my favourite is the fed iv, it was shipped from Australia and the whole process was wonderful, even down to the kinda folks putting on the box it was a gift do I didn't get thumped by import tax!
I've worn my Christy's in the rain and has taken a battering. Because of which is got a slight taper which gives it the ToD look, but I prefer a raiders pinch. I ordered this one from the uk - it's a uk hat and has a history via the poet and Herbert Johnson and that.
The downtowner has the perfect bash for raiders and is not really worn that much as I just prefer the fed iv.
Hopefully that gives you an idea of some choices. For the same price as a fantastic hat you can get a few different looks. The Christy's is only about £60 or so. So you don't feel bad really tearing into it.
However, the big problem is getting a cattleman's Stetson in buffalo! That did cost a lot of money to import!

Paul, thanks for this. I was always interested in hearing from one owner how these hats stacked up against one another.

There's nothing wrong with trying to get an off-the-shelf lid that will fit the bill. However, it sounds like you have a few unusual but specific desires. That screams "custom hat" to me. Perhaps you should consider a conversation with Penman Hats or one of our other member hat makers. Some may ship overseas reasonably, and asking for specific variations is really what custom hat buying is about. And they may be willing to work with you on avoiding customs fees.
However, if you're going more for the general look, an Akubra Fed or Akubra Adventurer might be all you need. If the hat won't see much wet weather, the Poet or a Christy's should do.
Just my opinion...

Thanks for the help so far guys, I doubt it would get deliberatley worn in the rain. But at some events we do get caught out in the rain so cant rule it out
Part of me is leaning towards a Penman LC hat as a comprmise for the TOD look

Well if you want a Penman TOD, why not order a Penman TOD?

I just like the taller look of the raiders compared to the lower TOD, the LC looks taller with a TOD loose pinch. So seems the best of both worlds, I could be wrong though

As him for a hybrid, with the features you like from both. I'm sure he could manage it.

Will do just got to save up my pennies, before I can order. Theres just so many great hat vendors, without seeing any of them in the flesh personally it's hard to make choices.

I'll give my endorsement to Diego's hats... I've worn my SOC hat from Steele & Jones daily for over a year now and it is a great hat.

Here's two shots of my proto type TOD. The only difference between this and my offering is that I added an 1/8. Notice the bow isn't a Raiders bow. TOD and LC don't have the Raiders bow.

Wow, that's better looking than the real ToD hat(s).
