Forgive me but I tried a search and came up nothing.
There is a whip maker on COW that also sells straw indy hats, one in a TOD style as well.
Anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Jack

Wow, I had NO idea this guy existed! I'm going to have to get one of his straws. They look great! I have a dark brown Indy straw from Peters Bros but another $150 was going to push it for a lighter one.
For anyone that has one of his straw hats, how sturdy are they? Can anyone compare to the PB milan straw?
Thanks!

I like that one too, but I feel like the ribbon needs to be a little wider... It doesn't look as wide as even the Doom hat. Otherwise I do really like that one.

True, but considering Indy didn't wear a straw hat, I can forgive those little things myself.
It's 'Indy'ish' enough for me, and I especially like the cherub pin. Never seen one of them before.
Actually, I'm pretty impressed with all of them. Wish there was a bit more specific information there.....like, do they come with leather sweatbands?

Yeah, that cherub pin is a nice touch. I always felt that the TOD hat looked more "western-ish" and seeing it in straw seals the deal for me in that regard. It looks good in straw. Now to find some "indy-ish" cowboy boots. Would Indy wear snakeskin maybe?

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the Ness or the indy version. I like the Temple but it looks too western for the look I was going for.
Speaking of I found a place that makes cheap suits. Yes I know you get what you paid for....but I plan on wearing these every day so getting their mileage. Considering you can get it customed out to the point of almost ridiculousness.....I think 90 bucks is worth it.
The only thing I'd add that isn't in their specs is suspender buttons. Then I can really get the world traveled look......

Dusty is a stand up guy. I have talked with him many times by phone. I have seen the straw hats and he does good work but these are stiff straw.

I emailed him via the contact us info and he got back to me this afternoon/evening. Here's the info for you. I also asked him about sweatband material just now so I'll hopefully get a response this weekend sometime.
Riothamus
The only colors I have available are white, tan and the white tan mix pictured on the "Fairway".
The tan and the mixed only come with 2 3/4 inch brims.
The white straw however is also available with 3 1/2 and 4 inch brims.
You can change crown and band options on any of the styles.
Thanks,
-Dusty

Hey guys,
Sorry I've missed this thread.
I'll try and to answer some of your questions.
The straw bodies I use for these hats look a bit western because they are actually western hats. They do have leather sweat bands.
I order them with open crowns so they can go Indy or western. I have 2 3/4 inch brims for the Indy fans and 3 1/2 or 4 inch brims for the cowboys/cowgirls.
The crown is the standard Indy height but a bit more tapered towards the top giving it more of a Doom look.
These hats are tough. They are not soft and being manufactured as cowboy hats they will take a lot of abuse.
I wear a Fortune and Glory myself to work. I have a patio and carport business which keeps me out side every day all day.
I never take it of rain or shine. Under these extreme conditions this hat will look good for 6 to 8 months but last for another year with a true Raiders look. My current hat is a little over a year old and athough it looks rough it is very comfortable. However being in business as a hat vender it is about time for me to show off a new one. Oh how I hate breaking in new boots and new hats:)
Here's some pitures of my trusty old lid. I like my brim turned up a little higher than the Doom. It looks a little LC Venice pier.

How cool are they in humid weather, Dusty?
Usually I've found a 'hard' straw made to withstand all types of weather to be pretty warm on the noggin in humid summer heat.
How is the air flow through these offerings? Are there any decent vent holes in the crown to offset that problem or is it just dependent on the flexibility of the straw itself ?

If I have your size I can have your hat in the mail within the week.
The smaller and larger sizes or Custom sizes as listed on my website, I have to order the open bodies.
This normally takes 2 to 3 weeks. Once the hat is in my hands its in the mail within the week.
As for airflow, these hats are very durable because they have a thick clear lacquer coating. Unfortunatly this does make them hot in the summer until they start breaking in from wear. I have thought of offering eyelets in the sides but this would no doubt kill the Indy look. On my personal hat I put eyelets on each side of the center bash inside the crease where they are not noticed.
All in all their still cooler than a felt in any time of the year.

I guess that would mean right in the top of the hat on the sides of the 'valley' of the center dent. Still like a picture, though. Sounds like a good idea. Not really a rain hat anyway.
I already know I want at least one of these hats. Just waiting on Dusty to come up with a large body.
Glad this thread got started!

I could be just seeing this wrong, but from these pics it seems rather westernish.....yet this is the fortune and glory, yes? Maybe it's just from the wear and tear which seems considerable. Must be great beaters. Loving the looks of all the hats on the website though....

Is this something you would consider doing if requested. A lot of us ARE looking for 'function' over 'form' when it comes to cooler head gear in summertime heat and humidity.

I second the motion! Let us know and you might have a rush of orders coming. Even my PB straw breathes only so much. And I DO like the look of your non-western hats very much!

Same here on my PB straw, but compared to a felt, at least SOME air is moving around my cranium.
No air movement at all, be the hat straw OR felt, is still hot, no matter what the material.
When you use a hat on a daily basis, 'we're' looking for comfort first, THEN 'appearance' second. They're close in importancem, but I've found as I've aged, I'm more toward the 'comfort' side of the equation than I used to be.

Without confirmation that eyelets can be installed on request, I've moved on to other things.
I don't need another 'hot hat' in my stable for summer, no matter what it's made of. I can wear a fur felt and get the same effect.
I guess the old PB straw is coming out again.....tomorrow, in fact. It's finally warm enough to wear it.
Good luck to everyone who orders one. They look really nice. I'll be interested in reading reports of how they perform should someone bite the bullet and actually buy and use one this summer.

Sorry for the delay on the reply fellas, the eyelets I put in the top of my hat are a good idea and they get the job done but I am in the process of locating something better to offer my customers. I will have something soon and I will post pic's ASAP.
Thank you for your patience,

Alright folks as requested.
I'll start with a picture of the eyelets I installed in my Fortune & GLory.
This was done after the hat was pretty broke in and although it worked well I've wanted to improve on the appearance.
This is a picture of my latest hat. It is not an Indy style hat but it is the same body as the F&G.
I have been wearing the hat this week with the eyelets and all of last week with out the eyelets. There has been a considerable difference in air flow and temp.
I also believe this venting patern is much easier to look at.
You can see in this picture how the eyelets are almost nonvisible from most angles.
-Dusty
Just wanted to add one more picture of a hat I did for John Penman. Keep in mind John sent me the grosgrain ribbon and sweatband from his own collection for me to install on the hat. I took some pics' of this hat before mailing it off to capture the true look of the "Fortune & Glory".

I really like the Penmans....very classy touch with the ribbon. Great collaboration guys!
Not sure about the look of the eyelets. Might be a case of function over form. Maybe it's cuz I'm used to seeing the eyelets in the common area of the crown. But hey, that's how ideas turn to common practice so maybe this could be the beginning of something fresh and new. Best wishes!

I gotta say, that hat looks stunning.....
I like the hatband's thickness..Adds a great deal to it, and the shape of the bash is stunningly well done....I'd be more than interested in buying a summer hat as cool as that....
Great work!

Now the hat you made John Penman is EXACTLY what I had in mind in both color, design (bash) AND vents. I believe you have a winner in terms of a tough, but cool summer hat design if you offered that bash WITH vents installed on request !
WELL done! Will you be cataloging this for sale on your website anytime soon?

Dusty,
I'm in! I love the vents, especially in FL. I love the CS bash (my fav). I would pay a few extra bucks for John's ribbon as well. What would be the turnaround time for THAT hat? Going to the beach in August and that hat would be perfect.
John, let us know what you think when it arrives.
