Making a cotton duck cloth jacket

I found a seamstriss in my town. If she does a good enough job making me my black Indy pants I want her to make me, among other things, a cotton duck Indy jacket. My question is, how much yardage would be required to make a jacket?

Thanx!!!
Charlie

I don't know. Westeds are too small & too short for me...

I will have to look into that. Last time I checked, they custom make leather, and the denim were only made in Asia & only came in standard sizes in denim.

I did that for my Indy jacket... Had a tailor make me a custom jacket. All I gave him were pictures of various Raiders jackets I found, Todd's and Wested's, I think.

He did kinda nail the design. Too bad I didn't know about gussets when I had mine made... There is a place here that can also make custom tailored leather jackets, but it costs around $350.

My custom cotton jacket cost around $70 - $80... Depending on the exchange rate.

The yardage is a question best asked of your seamstress. Obviously the size of the jacket will determine the amount of material needed. Keep in mind, though, for heavier twill fabrics like this you will need more yards than you may think. To keep the nap of the material correct throughout the jacket, there will be more waste as cuts can only be made in one direction on the fabric.

Indiana Jeff

Thanx everyone. As to the Wested cotton drill jackets, they do not offer them in their custom line. That is only for their leather jackets.

Thanx!!!

I would totally buy a heavy twill or duck cloth or denim type material Indy jacket if I could have it custom sized, off the rack sizing seldom works for me.

I bought a cotton jacket from Wested a couple of years ago, OTR in size 42 and it fits okay and its gotten beat up enough over the years to be a fine 'everyday' jacket when I'm working outside and don't want to mess up any of my leather jackets.
And, they're fairly inexpensive...

Wow Fenris,

That looks better than some distressed leather jackets I've seen

Please do describe those "weird techniques" of yours.

Do you gentlemen think this jacket could be made without a lining?

Thanx!!!

The "weird techniques" involved a black crayon and a dense nylon brush. :anxious:

From afar, the jacket kinda does look like leather. It's only when you look closer that you'll see the cotton pattern.

This jacket has no lining at all and still feels okay to me.

Are you asking if it's physically possible or recommended?

Physically: sure, it starts that way until a liner is installed.

Recommended: depends on what you are looking for. Denim jackets generally are not lined and they work fine. A lining will give the jacket a more finished look and depending on the fabric used for the liner could add weight/warmth. I would think the seamstress would finish the seams differently if a liner was not going to be installed. Likely it will be cheaper without a liner.

Indiana Jeff

Here are other shots of the jacket...

Image
A closer view will show the cotton pattern...

Image
Here's a shot with the flash on... Makes the jacket seem redder than it really is. Maybe I should take a pic outdoors.

The jacket's color looks more like the one in my older post. The flash seems to really make it reddish.

Fenris,

You essentially made a partial waxed-cotton jacket. :TOH:

enigmata_wood had great success doing so with a Wested cotton jacket.

His thread was my inspiration for it... I was just lacking most of the "ingredients" he used. :D

It's actually a work in progress, I'm still afraid to go overboard with it.

I recommend you ask your seamstress how much to buy. That's what I did. My tailor told me how much material he needed to make the jacket.

I pick the pants up this morning. Thet aren't too bad. The rear pocket flaps aren't 100 percent & the seam above the rear pockets I'd straight up & down instead of at an angle. But I am very happy. I think in a few weeks I will have her make the jacket as well as another pair of adventure pants in some cotton I found that is a perfect match for Magnoli's discontinued dark khaki.

Thanx!!!
Charlie

Don't forget to post some pics when the jacket gets done... as for the pants, post it also (not here, though... maybe at the other section).

4 yards of duck cloth are needed plus 2 yards for lining.

I hope it's good. Should be, since you're using a very good jacket for a template.

I'd still like one in light khaki like the old U.S. Wings jackets.

I went to take a look at it today. I'm having here change the pocket flap shape as well as using magnets to hold the flap shut. I'll be sure to post pics this weekend of me showing it off with me wearing the MARPAT pants. It shall be titled: Alt Indy Gear.

I picked it up today. It doesn't have the side entry pockets but that's okay as this isn't a winter jacket. This is more of a 3 season jacket. I will get pics up this weekend.

Thanx!!!
