How is the the Horse from Wested, lately?

Post by Alathea_Squared »

I have a custom Last Crusade coming from Peter hopefully next week sometime, in horse. I went back and forth between horse and novapell but opted for known durability over a worn finish, much as I like that distressed cow look. Does anyone have a recent horse acquisition picture that they could share with me?

I'm unable to post pictures but my USA Horse hide looks indestructable! Thick and very heavy.
Purchased 4 month ago.

no problem, Gailen. Horse is horse (of course of course). Id love to see some other pics if there any out there. I can't seem to find Peters leather sample pics on his website anymore.

I bought a HH back in August last year, well made, very tough, took a few weeks of constant wear to start to soften up. I ended up selling it as I bought a Novapelle which IMO has alot more character, I wear it pretty much all the time. The HH from Wested seems to have changed over the years, it does not appear to have the same finish as earlier models, the coating on it is very water resistant but the trade off for that seems to be the overall look is much more of a new jacket rather than a worn jacket. Don't expect the same leather as say on an Aero HH, I think the coating on the Wested won't lend itself to a good worn look if that is what you are after. Trying the 'water treatment' on the sleeves, for example, just won't work, water just rolls of it. This is just my opinion and it all depends on what you want, I'm sure you will be happy with it. Here are a few pics of my Wested HH taken shortly before I sold it.

Great pics, raider7-thanks! i love the worn look, but I also wear my jackets to be worn, too, as i don't have opportunity to have several. 1, maybe 2 will have to do it, so getting the best one for use has to take precedence over the best one for looks. I don't dress as Indy or anything like that, and i'm not building a collection so im not so worried about being SA as I am the 'character' of the jacket and the style, which I love. My Schott bomber is nice, but not 'dressy' and really heavy (and about 2 inches too short for my preference, too) and my black shearling is, well, shearling, and REALLY heavy.

The Indy I ordered has the best of what im looking for. 28" length (since im girthy it pulls my jackets wierd and makes them shorter), sliders, interior pocket, and name tag so it doesn't get stolen this time. I also asked if they could reinforce areas and maybe run it through the dryer with some tennis shoes ( I got no response to that one). Im stoked.

I'm going to echo what Raider7 said. I had a HH from Wested and it was incredibly stiff. I had it for a couple of years and never showed any sign of wear. I dislike most forms of distressing myself so I did something more natural. I ran one sleeve through cold water to give it a shot. The sleeve barely changed. Water does indeed run right off of it. The jacket is also far from warm even though it's super heavy and you won't forget you are wearing it. The color is consistent as is the grain.

Good leather if you want a heavy jacket that is relatively durable, consistent color and grain, and doesn't distress easily. Not the best if you want a lot of character, no shine, something lighter.

The Horse from Wested is wonderful, a little tough. Ironically, it's best served undercooked with a light peppercorn cream sauce (ala Steak Au Poivre) and I also like their asparagus offering as a side with it. :TOH:

thanks for the feedback, guys. I do indeed want a jacket that I can wear, more than a character piece. I love the novapell look, but ive never owned a horse jacket before, so I thought Id jump on it-you only do this 'once', right? :rolling:

DHL says it's in omaha as of 0800, so i suspect, being in Lincoln, Ill see it yet today.

It has arrived! No wearing shot of it yet, but the smell of this thing is intoxicating, and almost too much.
It came double wrapped in a DHL tyvek envelope and weighed a couple pounds.

Now I have to just get over wearing a jacket unzipped, vs zipped.
