I have a lightly used 10' CS Jacka and was wondering what the curl should look like once it's broken in.
When I roll it up and put it in my whip holder, the handle is so stiff and long it either sticks out straight like an excited mule or hangs way below my knee. I can loop it about 4 times which seems to be the max for Wades super holder. The handle end is pretty stiff for about 2-1/2 feet.
What's the best way to loosen up this section of the whip. I read you shouldn't try bending it with your hands.

Re: How much curl on a 10' CS Jacka?
Using it. This is normal for a jacka. It won't get as loose as a normal whip, that's all there is to it. Just use it a lot, don't power
crack it or attempt to flex it with your hands, just use it. BTW, the "stiff" area you're talking about is called the transition, for
future reference. The only part of that whip that has a handle foundation, is from the heel knot to the transition knot. Jacka makes
the transition of the whip very stiff with lots and lots of binding, and he uses really thick cowhide for the interior.
To get it to relax enough to coil in a belt, you just need to use it a LOT. I've heard of some people using it very light and it takes
a year + to relax enough to look ok coiled, and I also heard of another person that got it to this point in a month , they just
used it a LOT.
edit: I made a whip a while back with an extended transition, not as long as a jacka, but stiff very stiff. After about 15 minutes
a day ( usually a little more but I'm spitballing it ) it got from this stiff :

You can see it's relaxed, but not too much. If I used it for 30 minutes a day, it would probably be much looser.
BUT, I don't use super thick cowhide for the interior, I use roo plaited bellies and kip bolsters. Also this whip is quite thin, not
super thick like a jacka, which also contributes to the stiffness factor.
Just use it!

Re: How much curl on a 10' CS Jacka?
I decided pretty early on that I wasn't interested in the Indy IV Jacka, so I stopped paying much attention to design details, but I recall someone pointing out, (was it BW Borton posting on his conversations with Terry?) that the handle foundation of the CS Jacka is the same longer length as his standard bullwhips, and so it extends a fair amount beyond the transition knot? I don't quite remember. Can someone either verify or shoot me down on this?
Either way, YEAH Jacka whips are not known for loosening up as much. I've seen pictures of some that coil up pretty tight, and I just don't know how they get that way with regular use only. I have a 6.5' Jacka "Straight Handle" whip, (what Mark Allen used to carry as the Australian Bullwhip.) It's about 12 years old now, and I've put it through the ringer, (cracking in the rain, on snow and ice, sand, etc. etc,) and it's STILL stiffer in the transition than most brand-new Morgans!
All the best, happy crackin' and happy holidays!

Though I am far from being as knowledgeable as you guys on whips, I layed down my Morgan, Strain, and Jacka and there no question the Jacka was by far the stiffest and the Heaviest. All have had about the same amount of use.

Handle foundation is 7" long. He does a lot of binding at the transition to make it that stiff, and feel like it has a longer handle.thefish wrote:I decided pretty early on that I wasn't interested in the Indy IV Jacka, so I stopped paying much attention to design details, but I recall someone pointing out, (was it BW Borton posting on his conversations with Terry?) that the handle foundation of the CS Jacka is the same longer length as his standard bullwhips, and so it extends a fair amount beyond the transition knot? Yes, now that you mention it, the handle does feel longer.
