For some reason saddle tan allways looked more Indy to me. Since childhood I always thought Indy's whip was a very dark brown one. I never realized it was a much lighter whip until I joined up here. maby because I grew up with Last crusade more then Raiders. I personally love the darker whip but I so dig the natural tan as it ages. love it!! anyways, the darker LC looks more aged and old then a fresh light color we see in Raiders. Temple is difficult to get right. most of the time we see it dark and at the village end scene we see it in natural color. many whips used I know.

anyways, show us your saddle tans. and especially the old and aged ones.

This was when it was brand new, it hasn't really gotten darker aftter three months.

I'm also a big fan of saddle tan, even though most of my customers over the years have ordered natural tan. In this picture is a brand new (at the time) 10ft in saddle tan next to my personal 8ft (a year or so old at the time) also in saddle tan. I love how saddle tan looks as it ages!

Pagey, those are gorgeous! Now, I want an eigh footer in natural and in saddle tan too.

I had planned on making my next whip an 8 foot 12 plait in saddle tan, but then I got an order for a 10 foot 12 plait in natural, I'm

not in ANY way complaining, because I'd rather have an order ANY day than have to "worry" about ebay, I'm just letting you guys

know that I WILL have a saddle tan whip here eventually.

I was the lucky owner of 10ft saddle.
I sold last year because I was in urgent need of funds to cover unexpected expenses, but my heart is still very attached to the whip.

It's that whip at the top that made me want to make a whip in saddle. I like the reddish tint that seems to be prevalent in saddle,

and the color of that whip was just perfect. I just got word from the place I buy roo from that they carry saddle tan, so the next

whip I make will be a 10 footer in saddle tan!

I'm also a fan of saddle! And, I really like that top whip--it's simply stunning!

Though I would add a couple of saddle tan whips to this thread.

I'm a bit partial to saddle tan, but I think it's because I've recently had a bad batch of saddle tan kangaroo. The hides seemed to be old and very scarred, and it was a bit difficult to get the parts cut. But I do remember when I got my first kangaroo bullwhip that I loved the saddle tan color!

I sure like the look of the aged saddle tan whips on here. I liked the color of the CS bullwhip, and the aged saddle tan seems to be a good half-way point with the best of both worlds. My kip bullwhip from James Emery that I'll be getting in a couple of weeks is in saddle tan--I'll be interested to see how it ages over time. In any case, thanks for sharing these great pics!

I think saddle tan is actually my favourite colour for a whip even though the films whips were all natural tan ( although the film crew dyed some of them if I recall).

That is one seriously nice looking whip!

Generally I drop 2, sometimes I drop 1. I don't think I've ever made a whip exactly the same way twice!

Well, I've finally got a photo to add to the discussion! James Emery of ClassicBullwhips.com just mailed me my very first bullwhip today, and he also emailed me this photo of it to tide me over until it arrives:


This is a Raiders-style, 8-ft, 12-plait, kip/cowhide bullwhip in (you guessed it) saddle tan. Looking forward to seeing it in person soon, and will try to post other pics then!

Could be the photography - indoor lights and flashes can be deceptive which is why I try to only photograph my whips outdoors in indirect sunlight.
Hope we'll see more pics when it arrives!

Hey All,

I thought that I would post a little swatch that I just made up to show the difference between my dyed saddle tan and natural color shot in natural sun light.



Nebraska Schulte's whip is a little lighter than this swatch but not by much, with use and exposure to the sun it will become the perfect saddle tan (not to dark and not to light). When I dye the leather for my saddle tan whips I try to give them a good balance of color so that in time they will keep looking a beautiful saddle tan and not become a dark brown.

Don't they darken when you grease them with plaiting soap?

I applied plaiting soap and shellaced the swatch because I knew someone would ask about it. Plaiting soap does darken the leather a little but nowhere near the color of the whip you posted riku1914. Cowhide in natural always tends to be lighter in color then kangaroo in natural.

I think that's because most kangaroo hides that are used for whip making are drum stuffed so they already are darker. I just ordered

a couple saddle tan hides from mike murphy's that aren't supposed to be drum stuffed so I'll compare them to what you posted. I've

seen a couple roo whips that were made with dry kangaroo hides and they were really light like the one posted above.

Do you ever have a problem with the dye wearing out, especially around the point and on the handle of the whip? I've heard this

is sometimes a problem when dying leather, and am curious about it.

I have not heard yet of any issue of the dye wearing at that location, I have seen whips that have been dyed where there color wears near the point of the whip for obvious reasons (it is more noticeable on whips with colors like red)

Riku1914 you have to keep in mind that Nebraska Schulte's whip is cow/kip hide (also is the other whip and the swatch) not kangaroo. So comparing it to the hides you are getting from Mike is not totally an even comparison, however I do try and make my cowhide/kip whips as close as possible to kangaroo. Just something to keep in mind.

I never really paid attention to the whip until I started hanging out here. Then I jumped on the natural tan bandwagon and was happy, until I started really looking at the whip(s) and the color changes throughout Raiders. For example, in the Well of the Souls, the whip looks quite dark:



Yeah, yeah, lighting and all that. But even when it's on his belt in Cairo, it's more of a red-brown. And in the insert shot where he grabs the whip from his belt, it's dark brown (and dusty) at the handle and goes almost black toward the fall.

What I'm getting at is that saddle tan is really starting to grow on me.

Sort of tangential (and probably already discussed 10 years ago): In the "dead monkey" shot, you can see Indy's fedora, belt and whip on the table. The whip is a sort of red/brown/cinnamon color. Interestingly, it looks like the wrist strap is detached on one end.

Definitely more of a natural tan here though.

It's just because they were all different whips. A lot of them were used so they had started to take on the saddle tan/darker brown color. If you look at some of them though, the whips look brand new, like in the opening scene in raiders, not with
baranca ( or however you spell it ) but in the cave with the spiders and with the "don't go into the light" and when the trade
for the whip and idol thing happens, those were all new whips, and were very obviously natural tan.

My thinking on it, if someone wants a darker whip I'll make them a darker whip, but I make any other indy whip natural tan,

my reasoning on that, it will get darker, but it won't get lighter, so have it light while you can have it light.

Pretty much - and I don't see anything wrong in wanting a darker Indy whip. As far as I recall, it's only in Raiders that there are any light coloured whips. The problem with natural tan in my opinion is that it is very boring looking for a year or two until it starts to develop a richer colour. I find new natural tan whips really rather ugly - like a hairless cat.

Im not a fan of the light colour of a 'new' natural tan. Imich prefer when the whip has darkened as it gives it a bit of character.

Don't you like Sphynx cats ? They're cute!

I too prefer richer color. But there is one scene in TOD when whip is natural tan, it's when Indy jumps on his whip in the cave of Kali. It's probably stunt whip, but it's still a whip

Bottom line is... they're all great whips!!
