New Indy Whip
I'm uploading on taptalk. It's an iPhone app. Gonna try it out. Hope it works! Lol
About the whip. It's a 8 ft 12 plait Indy style whip.
Difference in the whip from normal is.
10 in handle but I kept the diamond handle at 8 in.
Has an extra belly and at the handle thong junction I took the sinew wrap out an extra inch on each layer.
The ending strands are 8 instead of 6.

Re: New Indy Whip
Gus,
That is a great looking whip. I bet it handles wonderfully with the longer handle and extra binding.
It's good to see you posting up your new work again.

Re: New Indy Whip
So how many bellies and bolsters does it have if you wrote it has an extra belly?
New Indy Whip
Oh my mistake. I have an extra bolster. It's 3/4 the length of the whip.

Re: New Indy Whip
My first roo whip, with everything @ .8mm used 3 bolsters and two bellies and the thong turned out about 23mm.tomek9210 wrote:3 bolsters and 2 bellies? How thick is it?
I can't imagine how thick it is with cowhide.
You use 4oz stuff right? That's gotta be thick.
New Indy Whip
It's in between the 7/8 and 15/16th of an inch. I got a really good splitter. The whip fits very well in my hand. )

What did you split the leather down to?purewhips wrote:It's in between the 7/8 and 15/16th of an inch. I got a really good splitter. The whip fits very well in my hand. )

Oh also what splitter do you have? Just curious.
New Indy Whip
Yeah I split it down to eliminate bumps and uneven spots and areas. Do it to every bit of leather. I buy the 2-3 ounce hide and once it's all split and done it thins out pretty well. Making it nice and dense.
And the splitter. I bought 6 years ago from Tandy. It's the one that has like a 8" blade. I've used it so much that I have replaced the blade 4 times. I keep her very sharp.

Re: New Indy Whip
You use 2oz cowhide??? Is it kip or regular cow? If it's kip I understand, but in my experience, and from what I've been told, 2oz
for cow is too weak, how you get around this?

Ok maybe next time I'll post all details. Lol yeah man. It's Kip. But man I got a good supplier of hides that hooks me up with the best. This is the way I keep great whips at great prices ya know.
Check out the vid I got for it. This baby cracks awesome!

Re: New Indy Whip
I already have, it does crack VERY well.
When I finish the cowhide I bought just for bolsters, I'm buying some kip for bolsters from this place:
http://www.leprevo.co.uk/hides.htm
item number 038
The place was suggested to me by Graeme, he uses it for the whips themselves, but if it's good enough for the plaited portions I
say it'll be great for bolsters.
Where do you get your kip?

Re: New Indy Whip
This whip is Bad ###! He used kip hide so it weight is lighter and it feel more like a 6 foot Indy-whip. It cracks and targets very well, I am knocking out the candles left and right. Thanks again for the whip Gus, you keep getting better and better!!!

Re: New Indy Whip
Blake,
Congratulations on the new whip.
I have two of Gus' whips (bought second hand) and both are very nice.
Did you order the extra 3/4 length bolster to thicken up the whip (both of mine are very thin like a Raiders whip) or was it for extra accuracy?

Re: New Indy Whip
Gus mentioned the person wanted a more target oriented whip, I would assume that Gus added the bolster for this, but if I'm wrong
be sure to correct me someone.

Re: New Indy Whip
Gus knows I love to target...he did what he wanted. He put more in this whip then usual because I gave him freedom...it is barely thicker then my 6 footer and it is Bad ###! The extended spike and 6 foot Turks Head was a very NICE touch! I recommend it!
Re: New Indy Whip
here is my new 6' - 12plait whip from gus.
this whip is my sons whip, so when he is old enuff he can play dress up with his psycho dad!
the whip is EXTREMELY light weigth compared to my 10' 12plait roo hide.
the whip is very easy to use. very easy to target with. and it is longer then I thought it would be. so that was a nice surprise..
the craftmanship is very good and the knot is very SA.
It already is starting to break in and get loose and the whip cracks like a canon!
all in all, GREAT work Gus.

Re: New Indy Whip
That is almost identical to the first 6 footer I got off Gus...the one I crack candles out with almost daily. No one can make cow whips like Gus at purewhips! I own 3 Joe Strian whips, but my six footer from Gus is still my favorite! If you ever want to get pass that whip on, contact me 1st!!!
