Club Obi Wan

Greetings all,
I'm currently putting together an Indy costume for Halloween, and I'm looking for a good length for a whip that will mainly be a belt hanger, and then be on display with my other Indy props. So I'm wondering what a good length is, without it being too long to be manageable... and keeping it (more) affordable.

I'm relatively new to Indy costuming, but being in the 501st for 7 years has built in that desire to do the costume as high-quality as I can afford to do.

I've been thinking about an 8' whip... thoughts/comments/suggestions?

I would go with a 8 footer, plus it also looks good rolled up on display also.

If you can afford an 8', that's a good length. Also, look for buget whips, generally cowide and such. They are lighter and easier to carry around. Todd's costumes might be a good source.

8' is nice but 10' looks better.

You need to ask yourself is it just for a costume or do you plan on cracking it? A costume whip can be fairly inexpensive but may not be constructed in the same way a real whip is, and so may not crack at all or may break if cracked more than once...

Since you are not new to costuming I needn't tell you that paying attention to details pays off; if you just glance at a couple of images of something your mind will create an impression that many cheap items may at a glance, resemble, but upon closer inspection, fail miserably short of the mark. Ebay is a dangerous place for this kind of stuff. If you can, take your time to research things properly and don't rush into buying the first thing that pops up. Talk to people and ask many different opinions and questions; most will be all too happy to help.

There is probably a thread to whatever question you may have and out of respect for people's time who have already discussed some subjects at length, it might be a good idea to research things a bit first...

Thanks for the info everyone. I was considering shopping for an 8' whip, just wanted an outside opinion. I don't plan on cracking it (I'm not sure I'm that coordinated, probably end up with a scar like young Indy did, or lose an eye), so it would mainly be for display, with occasional costume use.

Franco, please rest assured that I'll do my due dilligence on searching before posting. I've been on forums for a LONG time, I know how that game goes. I actually searched for this info before posting, but didn't turn up and obvious hits.

Naturally if you can't find what you need, do ask. We're a friendly bunch )

Anything 8' and over should do, but 'The more the merrier', to be sure...I usually run with a 10', just looks/feels right....

I say 8' for since it's easy for a beginner to control and still looks good in a belt. Perfect length

8' it is... now to come up with the cash...

I have to agree with Franco on the 10 footer as far as costume appearance goes. You need to look a some of the Indy clips and photos to see how many times it coils around. While I enjoy using my 8 ft whip, the 10 footer looks better coiled up on the belt.
