Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
Hello,
I got a couple of really cool surprises in the mail Today & I had to share with you guys!!!! Let me know what you think??
I got these Awesome Aluminum Whip Handles Today from My POP! a couple weeks ago, when I was up visiting my Pop, I was talking to to him about making different types of whip Handles for my Performance hybrids (Lauren Wickline @ midwestwhips.com), just for fun to see what we could come up with- He showed me how to use his lathe (My Dad was a machinist for over 40 years) & we made a few different ruff wood handles that worked quite well but, I was more interested in making one in aluminum-( just because I thought it would look really cool)- Any way, I had to go back to LA, & so My Dad said he would try to come up with a couple of handles & send them to me to try out... Well, Today I got them!!!! I was really quite surprised when I opened a box & there they were 2 pairs of beautiful aluminum handles!!! they were sooo darn Awesome!!! He even had them anodized in Red & Purple- Wow, stunning! They come apart into four pieces so you can inter change them for new ones to make it lighter, longer, heavier or what ever you want! I put my hybrids on them & tried them out, they are a little on the heaver side but they work really well!!! I can't wait to see what he will come up with next! Thanks Pop you Rock!!!!

Hey Todd, you've been showing off your many whips lately. And you sir, are the cause of a serious case of envy here at COW.
Seriously. Those handles look terrific! It is always interesting to see people giving new ideas and techniques to the areas of whipcracking and whipmaking.
Will you post a video?
Aldo.

Very interesting concept, especially if you start offering different lengths of the stock, different butts... Speaking of which, have you thought of making some that were rounder, you know to be more comfortable in the hand -'cause a round butt is always more comfortable in the hand than a square one ;-)

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
Oh my gosh---are those handles knurled???? I'm just working up my first 'Florida Cow-whip' style similar to these, and I've always made my handles from stainless and aluminum for my bullwhips, so I was considering the same approach on a later whip...It looks AWESOME! I've always particularly liked the idea on a stockwhip, because you could make parts to mix and match lengths, widths, weights and such to customize the whip for each session!!!!
I may have some work for your Pop, if he's interested....
Those are beautiful!

You need to make a deal with midwest or something, those are amazing.

Yup they are knurled, & They are a little on the heavy side but I don't mind that. My Pop is working on a new pair right now that will be substantially lighter so I guess I'll have to wait and see what he comes up with! I also just added a new pic of different handle configurations options too, you'll have to take a look - If you have any pics of your stainless or aluminum handles, you should totally post them! I'd love to see them!PyramidBlaster wrote:Oh my gosh---are those handles knurled???? Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
The short one looks surprisingly cool. Is the entire handle hallow or is it solid?
Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
The handle is solid & it weighs about a pound, My Pop is already working on a much lighter version, although I don't mind the heavier handles at all but, I can't wait to see what he comes up with!riku1914 wrote:The short one looks surprisingly cool. Is the entire handle hallow or is it solid?

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
I find a handle heavy whip difficult to use. I actually find a whip with a very heavy thong and light handle easier to use than aTREX wrote:The handle is solid & it weighs about a pound, My Pop is already working on a much lighter version, although I don't mind the heavier handles at all but, I can't wait to see what he comes up with!riku1914 wrote:The short one looks surprisingly cool. handle heavy whip.
You should have the lighter version setup so that it can be plaited over.
Then again, one cool thing is that metallic look...

Are you sure? Light handle and heavy thong whip tends to tear out from your handle

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
It's probably just because that's what I learned on. If I learned on a regularly balanced whip I would probably prefer that, but Itomek9210 wrote:Are you sure? Light handle and heavy thong whip tends to tear out from your handle
handle lighter handled whips a lot better than heavier handles.

Adam says he can use nose heavy whips better than more "balanced" whips. So it's not completely unusual if Adam thinks that way

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
I think balance is more of a personal preference than a set rule.
Personally, I'm with Tomek in that I don't like nose heavy whips.
They tire me out too quick and cause my wrist to flare up (injury plus a touch of carpal tunnel)
Anyways, Todd, those handles look awesome!!

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
That post made me kind of laugh in a sort of ironic way. A nose heavy whip doesn't tire me out or hurt my wrist at all, while akwad wrote:I think balance is more of a personal preference than a set rule.

balanced whip ( actually a little handle heavy I believe ) hurts my wrist terribly even with a little use, yes I'm talking about the
most recent whip I made. I've been cracking it a LOT however and I can tell my wrists are strengthening because It hardly hurts
now, it's just more comfortable with my other whip still.
Kind of funny the difference in preferences and how it affects the body

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
Jeremy,
That may also have something to do with the extra stiff transition on that whip acting like a longer handle.

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
That could very well be, the transition does flex now when cracking, not as much as a normal one but I know it does.kwad wrote:Jeremy,

I guess only more time will tell what I'll prefer.

Re: Custom Aluminum Hybrid Whip Handles-
Since I do 'Indy' whips, they're inside, and not much to look at. But my point is that i've always taken the 'hardware' approach to my whip inner construction, always using a blend of bolt-together parts and machined ones...I've even been looking for someone to turn handles for me, since the knobs i've been using are harder and harder to find...If you have any pics of your stainless or aluminum handles, you should totally post them! I'd love to see them!
The handles look great...I've always loved stuff that's re-configurable and customizable. Maybe it's because I'm such a do-it-yourselfer....

I actually have been interested in turning my own wood handles for a couple of woodys, but I have no idea what the end that the whip thong is platted on should look like?? or if there is a hollow part there or what?? I want to do some whips like this- I got this pic from Victor SanSoucie's site http://www.handmadewhips.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; do you know what that wood end that is plaited on looks like underneath ?? Just wondering-
