Although, isn't it possible to find good quality leather whips for around the same prices that he charges for the nylons?

Yep, that's Rhett Kelley. He's an excellent nylon whipmaker. Be prepared though to wait 6 months; he has a regular job and does this on the side. But it's well worth the wait. I had one that looked alot like the one in the pic but a friend recently bought it. I had gotten a 12 inch handle on it and it was just too heavy for this gal to crack.

The great thing about nylon is you can crack it outside if it's wet.

Yes, and no. I rigged up a 15 foot piece of Samson Spot cord, known as trick rope for trickropers. I applied a 3 foot fall and popper on one end of it. Voila! I had a very long 15 ft whip. It will definitely teach you how to handle a long whip. Long whips are fairly much one trick ponies. No circus cracks and rarely and horizontals, but good for sidearm flicks or forward flicks. I am not sure how well it would perform in a shorter (8ft) length. It's very light but you are wanting to learn the action of a long whip. If you want to learn 20+ ft whips this is a great way to learn how to throw it. I preformed at the Wild West Arts Club convention in Las Vegas a couple of years ago with this 15 ft rope cracking it like a whip. It is kind of amazing.

I'll try the rope whip.

The stuff is cheap enough and I could stand to get creative. I'll let folks know if I can make it work.
