We can most all agree that the best choice of gear was a collaborative effort as to the costume that appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark. But if you take inspiration from Indy's gear and bring it forward to the present day, you will no doubt see that certain items of the character's costume are very practical, everyday wearable clothing. As time goes by and as we get older, you may tend to adopt your own style, borrowing certain inspiration from the character's original atire, while adding or changing certain articles of your own gear, by updating or modernizing it to fit your own personal needs and individualism....?

Are you an Indy fan who has adapted his her her own style, while taking inspiration from these iconic films.

As an example, Jack T. Colten, the character from Romancing the Stone was an updated, modern day/logical extension of Indiana Jones, in his own style.

I agree with you. Indy has a lot of ideas on gear in the adventuring world that are relevant and helpful. My only addition to the regular gear is the one thing I rarely leave on a hike without: My shemagh. It's kept me warm, it's kept me cool, and it's kept the sun off of my easily sunburned skin.

This is far from my best Indy impression, I just wanted to add a picture to this thread showing how useful my shemagh has been to me. Indy has influenced my style. It's hard to find any shirt in my closet that doesn't have double breast pockets and epaulettes. I'll try and get a better Indy-Esque picture later, when I think about it some more.
Great idea for a thread! I haven't thought too much about how I'd taken what Indy wore and translated that to a modern age. I'm still waiting for cash to clear up so I can buy a new Jacket and a Penman hat. Maybe THEN I'll be a bit more Indy, but still me.

Here's my gear from the archaeological excavation in Akko, Israel, last summer:



-Henschel Hat, with wide brim for sun protection, ventilated crown for the hot temperatures, and chin cord for those occasional strong gusts of wind on top of the tel.

-lightweight cotton short-sleeved shirt with sunblock (occasionally replaced with a lightweight cotton long-sleeve shirt for better sun protection)

-Victorinox Swiss Army watch

-travel research journal: leather cover with leather laces to tie closed and two pen holders in the inside back cover. I take this everywhere, ranging from square/trench daily notes, to notes taken at academic conferences.

-cargo pants for storing whatever I need to

-knee pads for when I'm doing fine work with a brush and trowel (we were digging on top of a lot of building rocks, such as ashlars, etc.)

-(not shone) sturdy leather boots, backpack from an army surplus store, and trowel with holster

Thanks for chiming in guys! I believe that some of Indy's gear is very practical, and as such, there have been some great new updates out there as well. When I go adventuring or to the dig in Jordan, this is usually how I roll...




Things many times are discovered by trial and error, or on a whim; but for me, I've found these things work best for my needs, especially when on the dig:

Henschel Hats, breezer Keeps the sun off and the mesh crown allows for airflow.

Duluth Trading Co. Adventure shirt The best shirt of its type that I've ever used, 2.8 oz. poplin. Sadly, they discontinued it, despite several prods to re-start the line, and suggestions to adapt an Indy shirt with several color options.

Pocket-T I've found that the pocket T is a good dig shirt, and as the day gets hotter, the long sleeve shirt makes its appearance. The key is to layer your clothing, especially if the seasons are in a state of flux.

Happened upon the Columbia Ultimate ROC pants by accident, but I've found these types of pants much more comfortable to dig with than jeans. Another favorite is the Weatherproof chinos.

Alden 405's Took these with my on my last adventure to Africa and they did not disappoint. A comfortable work/hiking boot is recommended.

Mk VII bag & strap The Indy bag is a very practical alternative to lugging around an overnight bag or a backpack, especially if you are simply going to the field for the better part of the day, not overnight.

That salty Penman, took it on my first dig, and used it like Indy Jones should! A real stinker, I have to say that once it was re-blocked it looked better than it ever did. Kicked off the SoC craze. I think your beaver hats just age better, jmo.

So where is my pic ?

Though you think I may have slided you, John, actually several pics have surfaced in this forum and on the dig's website, but unless I pointed them out, you would not have known. A friend of mine, who is the media director for the dig, regularly goes to CA, in order to promote the dig and raise funds, has included in his presentation a photo of me in that hat, etc. After I participated in my first dig season, that would be dig season IV, I posted photos in the scrapbook section, and here is only one of them:



...so the long and the short of it is that there have been photos, just not the kind you are accustomed to seeing.

EDIT: I wrote the guy requesting a copy of the photo, and when he sends it, I'll forward it to you, how's them apples? It's a better pic than this one.

So, you were hiding them from me in a section I normally don't go. Sneaky o chap.

Ultimately, 'the clothes does not the adventurer make'. You can have the greatest adventure of your life in simple attire, and no doubt feel ever bit as adventurous.

I tend to keep My fedora, boots and sometimes my bag but with a military style shirt and jeans. The Fed 3 has been retired now though. Got myself an AB Deluxe! Still, that hat went dozens of places.... Adventures most of us have may not be as fantastical as those led by Indy, but some days if only our own gear could tell it's stories.

Here is another example with the new Banana Republic jacket. The only articles that have been borrowed from the movie outfit are the bag and possibly the gloves:

COW/Indygear have been amazing. I have almost developed an alter ego so to speak. In my off days i wear my Legend jacket, and dress functionally, for adventure or whatever comes up. In true Indy style. When im on the property shooting or off roading/exploring youll find me ready. Indy hat, jacket, khaki cargo pants, hiking boots, satchel, bowie knife, and Browning hi power on my hip in a WW2 USGI 1911 holster (repro). I am mismash of several films plus my own stuff. I need a complete picture still.
