I hope it's alright if I post this in this forum, but my apologies if not.



Was it just me, or did anyone else think Ford looked like he was wearing his Indy fedora in his early scenes in Cowboys & Aliens? Probably just the lighting, but it did look similar to me...

So, thoughts on the cowboy hat? Personally, it's too Western for my tastes, but I'd still love to get a copy by the same hatter for my collection! Now we just need to find the hatter!

They picked a hat specifically to NOT look like the Indy hat. I would call this a western hat as opposed to a fedora.

Yup, went into the movie having known that, but still kept thinking it looked very Indy on him for the first few minutes. Once he gets into daylight though, totally different story!

On a similar note, was it a brown hat? Because I swear, towards the end of the movie, he was clearly wearing an identical hat, albeit in gray. His travel hat perhaps?

Well, in any event, it shouldn't be hard for a western hat guy to replicate this hat, it's a variation of the Tom Mix crease. Black Sheep Hat Works, Knudsen Hats, Buckaroo Hatters, Jaxonbilt, etc, should all be able to make one of these.

I saw somewhere on the net, just two days ago...and, now can't find it...an article saying that there is a custom hatter in Montana that will be making this hat, for the public I guess. As mentioned above re: the 'Tom Mix' reference -- it hit me that way at first two, but truthfully with the crease picked it looks more like a 'Gus' hat with piping added. It is a cool hat! And, looks good on Ford. Something else 'Indish' in a way too is that I would note that it appears to be taupe in colour -- so from taupe pants as Indy to a taupe hat as cowboy we still see an Indy-type of movement even though Ford and all are attempting not to appear Indy-like at all. Boy was that confusing. But, as mentioned I do like the hat. W>

Unfortunately, since I have to wait until next weekend to see it with the Mrs., I can't comment on how it looks in the movie, but as stated they were trying to go as far away from Indy with the hat as possible. They even stated that early scripts had Dolarhyde with a whip! That was nixed. From some of the shots, early on I'd wished that they'd gone with something more like what he wore in Frisco Kid, but in thinking about it, I'm sure this was more they type of hat that a wealthy town-running cattle baron would wear over a beat up much worn lid.

I read an interview with Ford about the hat- he and the producers specifically sought a non-fedora hat. This hat is typical of a wealthy land and cattle baron of the day. Oh yeah, in the interview, Ford did say that the hat is grey!!
The interviewer even commented that it looked 'taupe' to him, but he wasn't a movie star so we shouldn't listen to him- his words.

I think that is a poblem with hat colors on film as we all know. I honestly think that if HF said it was grey it COULD have actually been a type of silverbelly. Silverbelly can look both grey and taupeish at the same time depending on the manufacturer and lighting.

Stuff all known by all here, but just thought I would point it out.

Steve Delk was originally approached to make this hat for Ford at Ford's request, but he declined due to being buried from the CS orders.

That's heartbreaking to hear. It would have been so cool for Steve to been involved with another film project, especially since it was the special request of HF. Of course, then Steve would be buried under 5 years of C&A hat orders.

+1...I've had Silverbelly cowboy hats- Resistol, Stetson, Baileys, and they all were different 'tones' of taupe/gray...some very light silver grey, some down right tan!

The only reason Steve is buried in CS orders is that he charged hobby prices for a truly popular film hat. He learned the hard way and now has adjusted the pricing accordingly. Had he done so he'd probably be happily making two film hats and decent money on each. This is such a shame because he deserves it. I just hope he gets a second opportunity when he's got it under control.

I dunno. I haven't seen the film, but from the trailer and what not, that doesn't look like any shade of silverbelly I've ever come across.

Optimo has the real deal silverbelly now, i.e.; made ONLY from the belly fur, and undyed. It'll cost you a pretty penny though!

In an interview in Entertainment Weekly Harrison stated that he wanted a hat that would not remind the audience of his fedora. He said that he tried on alot of hats before choosing the one he wore for the movie. It may just be a hat from the costume dept, and then later duplicated elsewhere. Tom Hirt makes a lot hats for actors. Sam Elliot often goes to him. And Hirt shaped the hats for the movie Tombstone, including the Doc Holliday hat worn by Val Kilmer. He did Quick and the Dead, The Rough Riders. And others.

Hobby money? I paid full price, over three years ago, what was it back then, four hundred dollars? Or Four hundred and fifty? Plus shipping....And it was real money - mine.

No... at first it was around $200-$250. It was at that price that Steve sold a massive amount of hats for. Then he raised his prices to around $400 to help slow down the orders.

I too paid $400 in Nov 2008, but I was talking about the $200ish range above, that's what swamped him. I too am still waiting for my hat, sent an email when he requested to a month or so ago and did get a very short response telling me he got it. Fingers crossed.

That makes me feel a little better. I've read here that there had been a lesser price and/or discounts sometime back. But I enlisted at this site after placing an order. I emailed Mr. Delk also, a month ago. And my fingers are also crossed...Going off message a bit...This is a great site. I may be a bit older than most of the members, but I saw the first Raiders film when it was originally released. And what I liked most about it were the costumes and props. Newsweek even devoted a page to the fedora and jacket at the time. If you grew up watching old movies, and serials, like Lucas, Spielberg, Coppola, Milius, (the original "brat pack"), then the hat and jacket jumped right out at you. And you wanted them. Outside of the movies it was impossible to find fedoras with the proper vintage proportions. Until the internet there just weren't the source references. Well, good luck to us
