Woohoo getting a 10' Jacka CS Whip!

I have been collecting Indy 4 gear since Nov. 2008 and am trying to stay with products from the actual vendors who made them for the movie. I've for so long wanted the whip from Terry Jacka in AU, but it was a bit out of my price range. Finally one came up for sale in the Bizarre and I'm buying it. :rolling:
This will be my first whip and I'm getting the cream of the crop.

http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=52398

Is there a good DVD for learning how to use an Indy whip?

Congrats on getting such a beauty! BTW, why are you selling it Allen?

Check out Adam Winrich's youtube channel. He shows there how to use an Indy bullwhip, and he has maaaany interesting videos. Most, if not every, whip cracking videos available on the market are rather for fancier routines, two handed cracking.
If I was about to buy whip cracking guide on a dvd though, I would go with the 'The Art of the Bullwhip'.

Be sure to check BullwhipBorton's comparison here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=42517" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You should get Adam Winrich's whip cracking dvd, it's not overpriced at all, and ( dang I really need to get it  ) he shows

him teaching a few beginners some basic-moderate cracks, so you can see common mistakes that you'll make when you are first

starting, and avoid them right off the bat.

Congrats on the new whip!

I second the vote for Adam's whip videos on YouTube.
I've learned most of my cracks through his work.

My best advice, advice that I learned from many here, is just to take your time and relax.
If you rush, you will make mistakes and you may not realize what is happening.

Practice the arm motions you will need before you ever even pick up the whip (really watch those vids, and I mean over and over again so you know where your arms need to be, what your body needs to do, etc.).

Get comfortable with a relaxed stance.

Once you start with the whip, again, take your time, work it slowly, and do not force the whip.

I spent last summer just working on those things, picking up single cracks as I went along, practicing those cracks until they felt right.
If you can, I would sugest getting someone to film you so you can see what you are doing right and wrong, it really does help.

That's my inherited 2 cents and I hope you enjoy the learning process as it's fun, frustrating, and rewarding all at once!

frustrated.

Hi, first post here :) but I wanted to say that’s an incredible whip made by a master whip maker. I’ve cracked an 8 ft and 10ft crystal skull bullwhip and even though they are long and on the heavy side they are very fluid and pack a punch, their very cool.

I also have Adam Winrichs DVD and have met him before in person, He’s very talented but consider Anthony De Longis’s Mastering the bullwhip 1 and 2 DVD first. They cost a lil more you get both videos in the set. I found them to be much more instructional and a lot easier to follow step by step when I first started learning how to crack whips on my own. He is also very good about safety precautions and how not to hit yourself. Plus you would be learning for the man who worked on Indiana Jones with the whip made for him and for that style of whip cracking :)

Wear at least a hat and some kind of glasses. I wear glasses so I don't have to worry about that, but make sure you are.

Glasses are a great idea, especially for beginners.
Remember, it's not a matter of IF you will hit yourself, It's a matter of when!

Glasses will be enough, you CAN wear those construction ones , but it would be overkill, though I suppose it might protect your

eyebrows to an extent... However like I said, glasses will be enough, as long as your eyes are good I don't suppose you'll inflict

any major damage upon yourself, just welts here and there, but for a whip to break bone I suppose it would have to be done

intentionally by another person.

I'd like to see one of the transition stiffness, when held with the handle pointing up, with the heel knot towards the ground just to

see a reference for how stiff I should make my indy 4 whip.

I got to use a Jacka Crystal Skull a few weeks back (as well as a DelCarpio 10 foot Raiders and a Joe Strain 8 footer), and I was stunned by the weight of the thing...I bodybuilt way back, and still do Jujutsu and Kendo, and enough weightlifting to KNOW a real "weight", and the Jacka was one GREAT workout....Heavy and with a roll out that I loved...It took work to get it to fly "right", but once you get it it really does feel like you've done "it"....Wonderfully rewarding whip to use I found....

But yeah...Heavy and as thick as my arms... :TOH:

Please don't do it. It will age on it's own, don't be in a hurry to make it"old" enjoy it's newness while it's here, then enjoy it being

aged.

Hey just to let you know, you should expect it to stay very stiff at the transition, this is just a jacka signature thing, and it's a

very good thing on these short handled whips. So I would suggest you don't try to make it looser by throwing it harder, and

especially please don't try to bend it with your hands, this isn't a good thing for the whip,

On the SA thing, you can just give it all a good coat a leather dressing and let it sit in the sun some, the knots will darken, some,

then the rest you can darken just by use, the heel knot that you hold will darken from the oils in your hands, so you can expect

that to be SA

edit: if you're just talking about dying the knots darker ( or even black ) then go ahead. What I was saying about the other

"aging" thing is like, kind of what dusty does on his Streets of Cairo whips ( CreasenCorral ) I know he wants it to be modeled

after a certain scene, but I don't like doing this to whips, but as far as making the knots darker, I personally would have no

problems with it, as for the somewhat "fading" of the whip, that will look BEST if you let it do so naturally, at least that is what

I have seen on my own leather whip, and what I have seen on other people's whips.

Well I took my whip out for a first practice, ever with a whip, and after some time started to get the hang of it to make it crack! What a blast, and I only smacked myself twice when the whip would swing back around and got me on the return. I'm learning fast on not what to do. Wow does your arm burn after awhile, its like a workout.

So Kyle what did you use to darken the knobs on yours?

In all likelyhood, just some very dark brown ( or black ) leather dye.

Do you have a video, or are you just trying to figure it out on your own? I suggest you check out Adam Winrich's youtube channel,

start with the cattlemans & overhead crack, then go into the flicks. Also you might want to check out the video he sells on his

website, it's very reasonably priced, I still have no idea why I don't have it yet, he says that on it, he teaches 3 beginners some

of the basics, and why is this good for the newbie? You can see common mistakes people do, so you can get past them quicker.

I can't wait to hear more from you, I hope you keep enjoying whip cracking, my first was with a crappy whip consisting of

cheap hobby lobby leather and duct tape, but I still loved it, didn't know anything better

Just came in from practice day 2. Wow you really can work up a sweat with one throw after another. I'm working on the overhand throw, if that's what its called. I'm switching from right to left hand and back again as my arm tires and go until I can't. On my second day I'm getting pretty consistent at cracking on the right and off and on with the left. I'm right handed so thats not surprising. There's a definite feel to it in the wrist. Sort of a quick stop and then the whip just starts to roll upon itself and makes that crack. Awesome really. The people driving by have HUGE smiles on their faces.
One good thing I didn't hit myself today and was doing a lot more throws.

Yeah I need to watch some videos.
