Did Ford wear Aldens when he did Water Scenes?

Post by Canada Jones »

Thanks to a recent purchase from the Cairo bazaar (Thanks _!) I am now the proud owner of a pair of Aldens. I have never owned a pair of these before and had only ever seen them online or through a store window (years ago I walked by the Aldens store in San Fran but the store was closed. Ironically this is where these shoes were purchased). They are heavier than I thought they would be which made me wonder - did Ford wear these heavy boots in all of his water scenes - especially swimming and getting on to the sub in Raiders.
wondering....

I read somewhere (making-of book perhaps) that he swam from the Bantu Wind to the U boat with his boots on.

He also had them on in the rope swing and swim to Jock's plane scene in Raiders, so I imagine he wore them in all water scenes he's been in.

They aren't that heavy while you are IN the water. You can actually swim in them quite well (ok, I had to go after a particularly expensive lure that I wasn't willing to sacrifice to the fishing gods). They're only heavy once you get OUT of the water!

Ok, here is another related question...were the boots used in Raiders his own personal pair or were they bought by the production? I am sure there must have been multiple pairs as I am sure he did not drag his own pair behind the truck. I know I read he had the production buy them from Fritz but I was not clear on how many pairs. THese boots seem pretty tough so I am wondering if the same pairs were used in all 4 of the films.

I guess you could say jumping in with your Aldens on is a real "cork soaker". ;)

That was an expensive journey to submerge your aldens too.

The Aldens are fine. I bought them so that I could wear them in any situation. They handled the submersion as if they were made for it. Aldens were made to take a beating. The lure was NOT made to live at the bottom of a lake.

I can catch a fish no matter what is on my feet, but what's much more important is what's on my line.
