Has anyone done the Jim Steranko Indy look? I love the pistol belt and smaller jacket.

Might try this variation in gear.










Also, does anyone know if these prints are available anywhere?

He definitely had more of a Doc Savage look going on. I would half-expect from those photos for him to end up with his jacket and shirt torn up by the end of the film.

I saw this post on Steranko and I wonder if I could ask a question a little off topic on Steranko...

Apparently Steranko published an article talking about these photos in a magazine (Mediascene?) around the time Raiders came out. I have been trying to find a copy? Anyone have a spare copy or scan of it?

Just wanted to chime in and add my voice to those who would LOVE to see some daredevil here at C.O.W. try and give this cool Steranko look a go!


We've got plenty of guys here who have a pretty great (and pretty BIG & varied) collection of jackets that capture the look of the Indy Era... and lots of Members who have various types of War-Era Gear (including perhaps BELTS similar to those in Steranko's paintings?)...

So, C'MON somebody! Do us proud!

I'm with you Mitch! I think I might still have an old Montgomery Wards jacket that looks close to the Steranko images. It would be alot of fun to put that gear together!

Man, did he come up with a great Swashbuckling-Do or Die-Take No Prisoners-#### Bent for Treasure-Land Pirate-Soldier of Fortune and Glory Look or what? The Steranko Indy would stare the devil down, spit in his eye, deliver a hail of bullets and sarcasm and use the steaming carcass as a sled to pack out his own plundered treasure.

In other words, a true Raider of the Lost Ark!

If by "look" you mean the facial expression, then yeah, that's pretty much my default.

Seriously though, I do like the belt pouch.

The belt pouch holds 2 magazines for the .45 pistol.

I think I'll put this look together for the QM this year.

I can almost see why they wanted to go with Tom Selleck.

Put that fella in that Gear and you'd have a pretty great ringer for that look.

I use to stare at this pic a lot when I played my Raiders board game with my family. At the time though I didn't understand why THAT Indy didn't look to much like the Indy in the movie....meaning he didn't look at all like Ford.

I'd like to see someone do this version myself. I'd try it but I just don't have the money at all to buy anything.....

By the way what's that strap across his chest attached to? I don't see a satchel in any of the pics.

Well I have to say that the most smokers I served with in the Army could run circles around us non smokers. In fact, one of my Sergeants smoked two packs of Camel unfiltered a day and continually set company running records.

Saw the same.

Guy would finish a cigarette before his PT Test, run 2 miles and score perfect, as well as being one of the first done.

Then he'd walk off to the side, get another cigarette out of his sock and he'd light it up and smoke while waiting on everyone else in the company to finish. Amazing.

You can do that while young; then you get old and it isn't so easy.

I have always liked these illustrations of 'Indy' as seen through an artist's eyes. I love the jacket, especially the shortness...kind of like an 'Ike' jacket,that way. The lapels are interesting too. I would imagine that Magnoli could have a field day with this one! I would add cargo pockets like MacGyver (Raiders jacket G&B) and inside windflap plus drop the back slightly similar to 'another Raiders jacket' -- Lost Worlds. And, add a half belt in the back. Gussets and partial bi-swing back like (Raiders G&B). Just my two cents. Oh, and produce it in a heavy goat like the Lost Worlds Raider! W>

ps: At this point...it is already out of my budget. W>

Thing is, since we're into Raiders before the war, that style might not have made it to the street yet - although I stand to be corrected on that point. Personally, I see the pleats as period-correct.

Regarding the flat fronts from WWII, as opposed to the pleated plants of pre-war times there is an historic reason for the change. During any type of war effort those (the country's) involved ask the populace to 'cut' back in many areas. During WWII one of the areas Americans were asked to conserve was cloth. All types of cloth ...this included tailoring pants, as in this case, without pleats to cut back on the material used. It wasin't a 'syle' or 'fashion' trend, as such -- though we might view it that way today -- it was a 'cut back' for the War effort. Men still wanted their pleated trousers, but could not get them through most sources. You saw this change after the war when the 'rationing' of needed items had deminished. W>

Agreed, but if you think "pleats" don't go with adventure, what about smoker's hack?! If Indy had been a smoker, he couldn't have outrun the boulder or the Hovitos and the story would have been over in the first five minutes!

Although, I have to agree that Indy does look rather cool with that cig hanging out of his mouth.

Sorry to go a little off-topic, but are the Steranko drawings available as posters anywhere? I've googled and not found anything. Jim Steranko has a website but it's not commercially oriented.

I did not know there were unreleased/concept drawings from Steranko's drawings. Have these been published somewhere? Would love to see it. There was a good write up about Sterranko's involvement in the Rinzler book. He talked about how the Jacket was modeled after one George Lucas wore (an A-2 I believe) and the hat is one based on a photo of Bogart as Fred C. Dobbs.

I hope you can. I would be nice knowing these were in the hands of a real fan' rather than gathering dust in a drawer somewhere.

These were the images 'we' had access to with the film first came out in the 'hinderlands'. There were few actual print images of Ford as Indy from the film. Remember,the internet was a LONG way off at that time, so we had to depend on what we actually saw on screen, and what little trickled out of the industry into our small towns.

The Steranko image of Indy was the first one I ever saw on a commercial item, and was on the boxed board game that came out in 1981 (if memory serves me right). When the film came out again in the summer of 1982, the game image was updated to show Ford as Indy as seen on the original movie poster.

We had access to the magazines and newspaper articles, but the photos were limited, and dark. The Steranko image was first....and I looked for that jacket for almost 10 years before giving up.

These sure bring back old (and VERY good) memories of the orginal 'chase' for any information and items I could find of this film.

I have so many 'treasures' squirreled back for framing 'someday' that it will take a pretty penny to get the task done....so they remain in their tubes or in storage until that day comes....if it EVER comes.
