Well, it's been since 2003 that I last bought an Indiana Jones jacket and I think the time might be ripe to get another one. My last jacket was a goatskin Wested which I loved very much but gaining a lot of pounds the last couple of years made it a bit too small. I can still wear it when I wear a shirt underneath but if I wear a sweater I get in trouble. I know, I should go on a diet but buying a new jacket would be a lot easier, don't you think. Oh yeah, and there are some loose stiches on the sleeve and one of the pockets. And the innerlining has ripped in many places. Lot of adventure I guess.
I wouldn't go for lamb as I don't think it's strong enough ( had a Lamb from Wested in 2000 but gave it away a long time ago).
What do you guys recommend me getting? All feedback is more than welcome. I've been out of the Indygear business for a while now but since I've bought a Herbert Johnson fedora some weeks ago, the bug has bitten me again and he has bitten me hard!

Welcome back.....unfortunately, u are coming back in when the tide is high as there are many selections to choose from including some future projects coming from some highly reputable crews. I'd say piddle with the small stuff untill everyone has their cards on the table and then rack your brain trying to choose!

I'm sure you'll hear plenty of advice from members more knowledgeable about the jackets than myself...

...But I've been very satisfied with my Gibson & Barnes Expedition in goat:

I wouldn't hesitate to wear that jacket in tough travel conditions, or when helping out on my folks' farm. I've wadded it up, slept in it, worn it traveling internationally and roughing it through back country, worn it horse-back riding on the farm, and have thrown it down on the cement next to me when sitting outside. It's taken a lot of abuse already, and still looks great.

Another good option would be one of the US Wings in one of the tougher hides. I've enjoyed my Hero in cowhide, but that particular one is virtually gone now. However, they have several other options in various strong hides.

...and just like with what our mom's use to do with sewing a piece of our old torn up favorite blankets into the middle of a new one, you could use your falling apart jacket to make a leather MKVII bags.

no, i'm in no need of a leather MKVII bag. Although I have to say I like the idea very much. But let me hang on to Noel Howard's bag for now. I just love it.

Okay back on topic...leather. What leather are about these days and what kind was used by the late great Tony for the KotCS jackets?

If you're looking for the same leather as what Tony used for the KotCS jackets, the U.S. Wings Collectors Edition specifically uses the same kind of pre-distressed cowhide from the exact same tannery: http://www.uswings.com/sigseries2.asp#IJVIN

Sounds like you're already familiar with Wested, so if you're looking for tough leathers from other vendors comparable to goatskin, here are some more options:

*goatskin (Gibson & Barnes, US Wings, and Magnoli)
*cowhide (Magnoli, US Wings [several different kinds])
*bison (US Wings)

Thanks. the pre-distressed cowhide looks great. is goat heavier than cowhide? or is it the other way around? My old Wested goat is quite heavy. Was wondering about that.

I believe it depends more on the thickness cut for the hide than for goatskin vs. cowhide. I've heard the CE cowhide from US Wings might be at least as thick as my G&B goatskin, if not thicker. Yet the antique cowhide on my US Wings Hero is thinner than my G&B goatskin. Perhaps others could speak up about these specific jackets?

I have the antique cow A2 from USW and love it!
I thought the Hero in the same (as advertised) hide would be similar. Wrong. Totally different. Hero cow is much thinner - to be honest, I dislike it.
But since reading threads here, I see it's what this jacket should look like. Still, as I posted early on, I love thick hides. The Hero in cow is too thin and not to my liking whereas I love the A2. It's thick, soft and looks amazing. I probably should have returned it.

It's awfully close. The CE is from the same hide source as the original TN CS jacket, and my 44R TN CS feels to be about the same weight as my G&B goatskin 44T in comparison. The TN is a bit heavier than my 44R G&B.

I've owned a CE, and it was the same weight as the TN CS..

Looking into the direction of USWings now. I was wondering about their sizes. Is their sizechart correct?
Well, the thing is. In my experience, US sizes tend to be a lot different than here in Europe. I've been to the States three times and went out clothes shopping a couple of times and the thing that struck me was I pulled out a size XL and it looked like it was a size too big. Had more of an XXL look on it.
And what's the difference between a Reg and a Long jacket.

I would say all the Wings offerings other than the Legend series are "Americanized" sizing. The Legend is cut a little trimmer. I believe the long would ad aproximately 2" to the body and an inch to the sleeves.

Okay, thanks. I'll do some digging about the Legend then. Looks like very fair prices and good quality.
