Boogered-up bullwhip help

I recently made my first nylon bullwhip. It is 8' long, 16 plait. I did a decent job of it except the handle. It is really too big to be used comfortably and it is rather lumpy. I guess I did not believe the advice that if the core is messed up, it will mess up the overlay. Now I have an excuse to make another one.
I do not want to just toss the one I just made because of all of the time and effort I spent on it. So is it possible to lop off the handle and use the thong on a stockwhip? If so, how would I go about attaching a keeper onto the thong. Would it be attached just like the keeper on the stock handle?

Thanks,

Tony

I guess you could attack it that way. I would put a turks head on the end of it just to lock everything off. One thing that will

happen though is that it will be too thick ( stock whip thongs are thinner than bullwhips ) and if you bound it, it might be a little

to stiff, stock whips are not bound. It may work itself out , but at first it will likely be too stiff.

16 plt stockwhip with two bellies would be too heavy; you can convert it into snakewhip or just replait it and make it better.

You could undo the knots and just undo the handle plus a little more, also undo whatever is under it that is causing the problems,

then just replait the the handle.

Given all the advise above, this probably will be my best bet for the best results.

Thanks,

If you gave a picture we might be able to let you know which one is in your best interest. Though I do think the one I made

mention of ( undoing handle ) would work fine.

I unplaited the handle down to the steel bolt. I replaced the 1/2" bolt with a 3/8" bolt; smoothed out the bolster; replaited the belly tighter; and replaited the overlay alot tighter. I have yet to learn the turks head so I just whipped the butt end and forward transition. It is quite a bit lighter, but it isn't nearly as bulky. I also need to master the chessboard overlay, so the handle is just the herringbone plait only going in reverse of the thong. Hey, it's my first whip, it turned out better than I expected.

Most definitely better than my first whip.

Here is a video that shows how to tie turks head knots. You can either do the pineapple like he did for the heel knot, or you can

just completely follow the first strand through the second time. If you watch the video you'll know what I'm talking about.

make sure you watch all the videos, not just the first one. ( all the turks head ones )

You could use what you have now for the knot foundations.
