I wanted to know what drop order you guys use. I've noticed that some seem to use different one's, so I'd like to know what you
use.
Also I'd like to know what is used to go from 8-6.
As for me, this is what I have done
16-14: I drop the bottom two ( the two closest to you when plaiting, or the last two that were worked )
14-12: I drop the back two, or the next two that would be worked.
12-10 : Bottom two
10-8 : Top two

oh boy dropping strands!!
it's been really a pain in the neck when i first started to make whips.
ok I'm talking about dropping leather strands. I don't know anything about nylon.
I used to do just as Ron Edward described it in his book "how to make whips"
Then I moved on David Morgan's technique "whips and whipmaking"
It was still really hard to make each drop without any bump....
BUT.....after many emails with some kind and accomplished whipmakers on this forum I've been to the following conclusion:
-whatever drop order you're using, practice makes it better all the time....
-simply take care to the tightness of the braid, and pull each strand one by one untill you've reached about one inch past the drop.
-drop one strand at a time and the result will be smoother.
To answer your question about dropping from 8 to 6: I still drop one strand at a time going 8 to 7, and 7 to 6. Usually I drop the strand that comes over the next strands, keeping in mind to achieve the following 6plait pattern:
under one, over 2 on one side, and under 2, over one on the other.
you will learn by yourself that when your strands are overlapping, it's time to drop a strand.
but don't wait too long or your braid won't be as tight as it should be. Remember you must keep your thong as dense as possible.....
... practice, practice and practice lol
Once Paul Nolan said to me dropping strands will always be a bother!!!
He was dead right!!
but practice helps somehow....
good luck!

I recommend this method:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVgz6EwKQcE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's easy and you got no lumps and bumps. You just have to manage when to drop a strand and you will success. It's very important in nylon whips, because in leather ones you can easily cover the belly with either 8 or 12 plt, depending on width.
I always drop my strands when they reach second position from the bottom, no matter when plaiting with 16 or 6 strands.

I seldom post these days but I thought I should affirm Jeanfifi's comments on the drop strands issue.
I don't think I have seen a more concise and exact posting of this particular issue before with comments about the philosophy of plaiting whips in general thrown in for good measure.
There is an order for dropping strands that makes the process easier to understand and it should never be a daunting task.
Thank's for your post JP
