We just wanted to let everyone know that this coming Friday, May 27th at 9pm Eastern Time, MidWestWhips will be featured on a segment of the Science Channel's show "How It's Made."

It appears as though our segment will likely be in the first portion of the show, followed by automated pizza makers, incense cones, and scale turbine engines.

Congratulations, but what irritates the stew out of me is how cable companies put programs like this in the upper tier channels that, unless you pay extra, you can't GET!

The program 'How it's made' used to be a Discovery Channel show. We enjoyed watching it every night. They moved all the GOOD shows to channels like Science and Travel, and OUT of the lower tier channels that we're currently paying for. In order to see these channels, I'd have to pay almost $50 more (or better) a month extra.

Grrrrrr.

Oh, that out of my system, I wish we could see it too! I always liked that show.

Great! Now I'll just have to wait about a year to see it on cable TV in Mexico... Hope someone records it and puts it in YouTube...

We still have the show aired everyday, but I think those are reruns. I'm not sure if they show any new episodes on the "ordinary" Discovery Channel. Some of the Discovery Channel's premium "channels" are on the higher subscription packages.

Mythbusters on the other hand airs the latest episodes.

Now that I come to think about it, we're pretty much in the same situation here, Fenris. I still hope someone will put in YT, though.

If there's a chance someone could 'youtube' the sequence, that would be nice.....sometimes the programs do it themselves. If so, and if someone finds it, plcae post a link so those of us who DON'T have access can see it too.

i just watched the show. that's pretty cool,and very interesting. i didn't realize what all was involved in whip making . you make it look easy too. congratulations on having that spot on the program.take care

The whole time we were watching other people were constantly saying ," do you do that?" "do you have one of those?" "you should

get one of those"

Do you really use the Dene Williams strander for tapering your strands? I know many just cut out by hand like it temporarily

showed in the show.

HA! Wow that's funny because if it's the same show I'm thinking about, they are from my home town. It started out years ago as sort of low-cost idea for a show that felt very much like a B-rated corporate video, but over time they got better at it and the show seems to have taken off. Funny, you just never know where one tinny step will take you; now they're filming Midwest Whips!

I suppose if nobody else does it after a while I could set a camera in front of the TV and turn it up loud, then upload it. I'd rather

somebody do it more of a techie way though, which I can do but I don't want to take the time

It was a lot of work for such a short segment, and they cut A LOT out of it.  It was over 14 hours of filming that ended up with only 4 minutes and 40 seconds of finished footage from our place, and we spent the few weeks leading up to it making many whips in different stages of construction.  Unfortunately, they only had a budget to spend one day out here filming, and there really just wasn't enough time to film everything, and also with the segment being so short they had to condense (and cut) a lot of the information into a more generalized "how a whip is made".

We weren't actually able to watch it when it aired, but thankfully a neighbor DVRed it, and we were able to see it.

Also, someone mentioned that the specific episode can be purchased on both Amazon, and also ITunes for $1.99. I found it by searching "How It's Made Whips". On Amazon you can watch a preview of the first few minutes for free, so you can see part of our segment on there. I know at some point they put them up on the "How It's Made" website, and also they are usually uploaded onto YouTube as well.

Thanks again everyone for the support, it was a lot of fun to do!

Hopefully it will introduce more people to the sport of whip cracking!

I taped it and finally saw it today. I enjoyed the segment, but it really displays how sorely this show needs to either be longer or have fewer segments per episode. Nevertheless, good show Paul!

They do need to make it where for these type of things ( hand made things ) they use about 15 minutes on it. Maybe show you

plaiting for more than 2 or 3 seconds at a time, maybe show you binding once or twice, or even show a bolster, not just mention

it.

I know how hard you two worked on this project and it really paid off. You guys did an incredible job, the episode was informative, enjoyable and the whips looked great! I’m especially partial to that 12-plait target bullwhip you where working on, the one featured in the opening segment…
