cheap summer fedora project

Just sharing few pics of a quick fix. I wanted a cotton fedora for the summer that would keep its shape.
I bought a cheap one -£8- on a market, the one with the roomiest crown that was all cotton. I bought it one size too large to help with stretching it taller.
I wet it through and stretched it over my hat block. while it was still wet I made up a thick mixture of deep brown acrylic paint and sprayed the whole hat. The wet fabric helps to spread the colour evenly.
I shaped the brim carefully and left it to dry.
Then it was just to put in the bash. the acrylic acts like water proof starch.
it ain't SA but it's close enough.
Later I may have a go at making a cotton fedora from scratch with my hat block to guide me.

I have a canvas hat (made in New Zealand) that I got for Father's Day YEARS ago that I did the same styling to.

The only thing you'll have to deal with on occasion is the brim can occasionally use a dose of spray starch and ironing..

They're great summer hats, and one I wear every time I work in the yard, or go on archaeological digs with the daughter. ;)

NICELY done!

Regards! Michaelson
