Hello all, I am new here, but have been reading for a while. I just wanted to say hi and all and see if anyone had looked at these pants. I apologize for not posting pics, but they are under the 'sale' section at LL Bean and they are called 'First Class Twills' these look as though they are pleated and have the flap pockets. Also there are the Double L Chinos, and both come in taupe and both are on sale.
Just wanted to see what anyone thought

This should work, they are made from a polyester/Tencel lyocell blend

Also, for the chinos. No flap pockets, I think, but pretty good looking

Again, just wanted to see what people thought. I'm trying to get a decent setup together by the end of the month.
Thanks for looking

These are dang fine looking trousers, my friend. I'd definitely vote for the taupe myself. I also suggest ordering unhemmed legs, so you can create the correct drape over your boots. Great find. These are just perfect!!!

This is the pair of LL.Bean pants that I wear.
I have about three pairs. Comfortable and they get good wear for the money.

So, between these two, which do you all think would be the best option? I was going to get some on the way, but was unsure about whether the polyester ones may be too uncomfortable, or maybe the cotton chinos were better. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

Hey Ren,
do they have the double flap pockets on the back and
I can't tell from that picture, but how good is the taupe color?
Those pants are on sale for 22 bucks!

The major elements (exterior) of the Raiders pants are:
- taupe or "officer pinks" color
- pleated front
- button down, back pockets with scalloped flaps
- there is a drape to the trousers, not stiff
- no cuffs, no creases

They look great! I think these might be my first pair of Indy pants. I have pretty long legs and usually look for an inseam of 38. If ordering them unhemmed it should probably work with 36?
Great find!

Swindiana

I say we go up to the LLBean outlet shop and get a handful of them. But then you're just going to annoy me with that silly SILLY lid!
All kidding aside -No, they don't have the flap. There's another version of the same pants that do actually have the flap but I don't know the Bean's name or number for them.

I think you mean these
other LL Bean pants. These are the only type pf pants I wear now. They are a little roomier and stay clean the whole day (even when I go out on a wet marching field or load a greasy instrument bus).

Yep, those are the ones I mean. The ones I'm wearing are less expensive but they're the best pants I've ever wore. They're the Akubra of khaki's.

(oh com'on, you saw that one coming a mile away!).

Agreed, Sergei. And don't forget, wool cavalry twill with no taper in the legs. I tend not to look at alternate trousers because they never hang right -- especially if they're cotton. You really need that combination of 100% wool and no taper to achieve the right drape. Also important, as Lee Keppler once pointed out, is that when hemmed, you need about four inches of material folded up underneath. I didn't learn that until I'd already had mine hemmed, but it is noticeable in the films. It adds to the weight and thus also makes the drape even more dramatic. It also keeps the seams from catching on your boot teeth. And as a final bonus, it means you have enough material to add cuffs, should the whim ever arise.

Sergei, you mentioned you may have found another source for cavalry twill/officers pink's? Will they be affordable as well as accurate? Keep us informed if you can.
Cheers,
Jeff

I just received a pair of the first class twills from LLBean. Initial review...
Taupe favors khaki; they are certainly lighter than the Bean dress chinos taupe.
They are slick/soft/water bead/lightweight, yet do drape nicely.
I can't tell that they have any taper to the leg. They may be strictly straight leg or "classic" fit. I typically can't wear this cut, say, in jeans, and I prefer the natural fit. So whether there is taper or not, further examination will be in order. I remember reading a NH quote about the the Raiders wools not being loose fitting trousers despite the baggy appearance on the screen. The fit of these new beans reminds me of that statement. I have seen MBA pants in person, but have never tried any on.
I'll have to take a look at the movie again, and find some pics here and there to see how these really look. I can't see it in my mind's eye.
This blend of material lends itself to a sharp crease. However, it dissappears readily when you want it to via use of the iron.
More to come...

They will be cheaper than MBA's. Around $125, might be a tad more or less. But that is the current thinking. They will be basically "officer pinks" with the pleats. Which is failry accurate without infridging in on anybodies business.

Not that this should be interpreted as wholly negative, the pants have been packaged for return. Just not quite right. The dress chinos are a better bet if the MBA's are not available or one has not opted for absolute authenticity. Guess we'll see what comes of the new MBA.
You think that'll be called the WMBA?
