Schott Flight Jacket
I have an opportunity to possibly get one for $100. It's supposed to be around 20 years old, military issue, but in good shape. Is that a good deal? I know new Schotts are quite pricey, but I have no idea about the quality of those made for the military.

I'd say go for it if it's in decent shape. Schott's got a lot of history.. go for it.
Re: Schott Flight Jacket
I don't believe I've ever heard of the military issuing Schott jackets. Not saying it definitely didn't happen, but caveat emptor....

Re: Schott Flight Jacket
They do/or did, but upon further research the one I'm looking at is not military issue.
"While we have made jackets for the military, this is not a genuine military jacket. All jackets made for the military have their military spec label and contract number, though the label will have the manufacturers name listed. A/2 jackets are based on military styling, but not necessarily to the exact spec. All genuine issued military jackets can only be purchased or issued through the miliatry, manufacturers can not retail a government contract jacket for commercial sale.........."

Re: Schott Flight Jacket
I purchased a Schott 184SM (brown flight jacket with detachable fur collar and zip-out liner) in 1993. I still have it, and it has held up very well.
Members of this group would approve of the natural "distressing" which has occurred, it really does look like it's been on some adventures.
Schott still makes the same jacket: http://www.schottnyc.com/products/lifes ... flight.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, they are about $565 now, up from the $200 I paid for mine.
Features I appreciate include the extremely high degree of comfort...the pleated back construction and gussets under the sleeves allow better freedom of motion than just about any leather jacket I've ever worn, significantly better than either the G&B Expedition or US Wings jackets I've owned...the rich, thick naked cowhide used to construct the garment...the "convertible" aspect by virtue of the detachable fur collar and zip-out liner.
If the jacket in question is your size and in decent condition, it's a good deal at $100.

Re: Schott Flight Jacket
Nice, thank you for the info!
The one I'm looking at is a 674. No fur on collar, satin lining. The back panel doesn't have that strip of leather at the bottom either. The current owner says they purchased it last year from someone who had been in the Air Force 18 years ago or had served for 18 years-not sure which. So I'm thinking the jacket was probably made in the 80's which is probably why it's still in good condition.
