Indy's L.C. Webley

Although this has probably been stated before, Indy's Webley in "Last Crusade" appears to be an un-modified (i.e., a .455 caliber, as opposed to a converted .45 ACP) Webley Mk. VI. The reason for my conclusion is that the Webley's cylinder has it's original serial number stamped on the rear. This can be plainly viewed in the scene on the beach, where Indy breaks it open to check for cartridges. Had it been a modified Webley, the modifications to the rear of the cylinder to allow the use of half- or full-moon clips would have removed this serial number. Just a tidbit for the "inquiring minds want to know" crowd!

Ron. Michaelson and I had a brief discussion a few months back regarding this issue.
I think the gun on the beach is a MK IV. Simply because it looks like it has a 4 inch barrel and the script calls for him to holster the gun in his pants.
I think the one he uses to fire is the MK VI and that one could have been converted.
Just some thoughts.

Pyro, thanks for the update! I'll have to pay more attention! That's interesting...I'm going to have to go back and take a look and see if I can view anymore details.

There' s more than ONE Webley floating around on that set. If you'll watch the scenes at the end of the movie, when Indy has his Webley removed by the German guards, you'll notice it's a birds head grip frame, making yet a 3rd model being represented. Regards. Michaelson

Ah, yes!...a good old Mk. I maybe? I wouldn't mind getting one of those, too...someday! I had an opportunity to put a few rounds through one a number of years ago. It was a great revolver to shoot. But, then, I just like Webleys (although not a s much as S&W's!).

I didn't want to believe it myself, but check out this IMDb picture. Look at the Webley sticking out of Indy's belt. Curved handle.

That's the birds head grip I mentioned above. Also, I believe Pyroxene misunderstood our discussion. I mentioned the MKIV as a good substitute for those not finding or wanting to pay the bucks for the MKVI. The MkIV handled the .38 S&W round, and the revolver is about 2/3 the size (or less) of the big .455 Mk VI. There's no way the beach scene used the MkIV, as you look down into the cylinder in a closeup, and it's WAY to big for the pip squeak .38 S&W. An entire .38 bullet, casing and all, would literally rattle through the cylinder and fall out the end of the barrel!

Wow! Look at the quality of those photographs, especially the ones of Harrison in the Map Room from Raiders. Look at the coloring of the hieroglyphics on the walls. Incredible, simply incredible. I can't wait until tomorrow when the DVD's come out.

My question is this: Is the Webley that Indy broke open on the beach a MK-VI or a MK-IV? I'd always been led to believe that it was the former.

Why? High regards. Michaelson
p.s. by the way, I wish I had never watched that tape you sent me. I spent the rest of the night tossing and turning, lecturing you on disassembly, ballistics problems, history, etc. regarding your dang MkVI!

I felt stupid because I read your post not once, but TWICE- and still missed the answer to the question that I asked. Don't worry about it; my fault. It's like Henry says, "The solution presents itself!"
)
Sorry about the Webley nightmares!
) I actually dreamed of the gun about every other night between the time I ordered it and the time it finally arrived, so don't feel bad. Hopefully the old battle cannon won't haunt you as relentlessly as it did me!

P.S.- If you have any more good info regarding the history of the Webley, etc, please feel free to PM me. I always like learning new things about my favorite sidearm.

Wish I could. The info I'm referring to is the type that can only be done correctly with gun in hand, and new owner in front of me, so maybe someday we'll have to finally be in the same room so I can add more to the 'pile' of info you already have. Regards. Michaelson
