J.W Hats in West Valley City. They said it was started in 1853 by Brigham young and a guy from Enlgand. Swung in there today, saw it as I was driving down the road, and asked them about my old Stetson that I had on, it needs a complete rebuild and a bath! They said it was $45 for complete job, new liner, sweatband, block and crease, and ribbon. Any way you want it. I checked out their hat they at the shop and they look pretty good, felts real smooth and a wide variety of them too. Nothing really over $400, although they said they could if needed.

That name rings a bell. You wouldn't happen to know if they have a website would you? :-k

Yep that's them. Though I don't know how good they would be at an Indy lid...

Jim is a real nice guy, I've talked to him on the phone. Ordered sweatbands from him too and they were of great quality.

My son who lives in SLC has a custom black fed from him. Said the guy was VERY helpful and the prices were surprisingly good.

Here's a link to the Fedora Lounge, a thread about JW Hats. It's very interesting, and the gray hat pictured on page 11 is mine!

On a side note, JW has some connections to Penmans and Art Fawcett's Vintage Silhouettes.

What connection is that? This is news to me.

Yeah I read that whole thread and I didn't see it. Maybe the same felter?

It's been almost 2 years since I was in there, and I met Art Fawcett at the time, he was visiting. But there were some boxes and other items for another hatter that I thought were Penman's, but it must have been some one else. (Maybe it was Buckaroo?) I apologize for the misinformation.

I remember not to long ago the Salt Lake Tribune had a article about this hatter. It talked about how people from all over would send him hats to have them fixed and other things. Glad he's in my neck of the woods. But I'll always be a Penman Hats guy though.

He Does have some ties it seems to practically everybody. He is very helpful and is open to whatever you want to do. I am having my grandfather's Stetson rebuilt, new sweat, liner, cleaned and re-blocked all for $45.

I asked him about the age of the hat and he said that it was probably late 50's and that is was very good beaver.

I am just trying to decide what crown to give it now. It's not an Indy, but its not full blown western either, 3 1/4in brim and 4.5 in crown. I am open to suggestions if anyone cares to give any. I am wanting something that is reminiscent of Indy and adventure but that can pass in the cowboy ring too but still be worn to the office. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

I'd go for an "Open Road" bash, which is also common on many Stetsons of the era.

You can wear it with the brim snapped up or down.

+1 on the Open Road. If I ever get another vintage style fedora, it will be an Open Road clone.

I did look into JW about doing bound edge for me when I first started but I didn't like his work. You can ask bink about it.

Thats the guy. I don't want any connection with him.

I sold that lemon your speaking about. Already on a new machine. I'm hoping to hear some news on the subject this week. I'm not holding my breath. I have been let down before. Not anyones fault but when you are speaking of machines that old you cant rely on them. Again, like most things. I have taken things into my own hands and having some customizing being done. lets keep our fingers crossed.

I hope the new machine works out good for you. To bad about JW though, I hope my hat turns out ok.

Yes, John. Get that machine as soon as possible. I want a welted edge hat out of you next. Could be soon too...as soon as you get that sewing machine.
