Measurement of an actual Underarm gusset

I have a question for anyone who can possibly answer this. Its about the
gussets we are talking about so much lately.

I have noticed that on jackets with the gussets, that the main jacket side seams
look as though they stop an inch or so from where they normally
stop on jackets without gussets. The sleeve seams seem to do this as well.

The gussets are added in where the normal side seam and the
sleeve seam normally meet on most jackets under the armpit.

I have asked Peter about gussets, and he has said that a well made
jacket does not need them. And I read now that people who have had
jackets with them, and without them don't really notice a difference in
the way the jacket moves with or without them being there.

I guess my question is, if you measure two jackets of the same size, one with gussets
and one without gussets, are the side seams and the sleeve seams the same
measurements? If the gussets are added to a jacket that has the same
length side and sleeve seams as one without gussets, then the added gussets would indeed add
some benefit as this would add extra material for movement.

But if the side seams and sleeve seams are made shorter, and then the
gussets are added, this really wouldn't make much of a difference over the
jacket without gussets.

If that is the case, then it would explain why most people who have had
jackets with and without gussets don't really see a difference in the way the
jacket moves. Like when your driving, or when you reach up.

If anyone who has access to both jackets in the same size with and without gussets
could do a measurement of the side and sleeve seams so I could veryify
this, it would be great!!

P.S. And I know that most people specify their own sleeve length, but I
am talking about two jackets, made to the same specs, with only the gussets
being the only difference in the two.
