Those strips on Indy's shirt

Does anyone know what those strips that run down the front of Indy's shirt are for?
Were they to drive us crazy trying to find a shirt like that? I've never seen them on any other "safari" type shirt.
Are they based on a design of the 1930s?

The strips are actually pleats. Pleats are an extremely good feature, in that if you are active, you want the shirt to flex and expand. Some of the shirts that you find, the strips are just that strips. They are decorative. A lot of shirts come with the pleats in the pockets which allow the pocket to expand if you put a lot of junk in them.

Really? They sure don't expand on the Noel Howard shirt.

No they don't. I wonder if Indiana Dan's shirt does that. BTW, where's he at? Maybe ITG can shed some light.
The shirt I had made the pleat was just sewn into shirt.
I was talking to RonC and he said he hasn't seen, to this date, that type of pleat anywere in military shirt history. He's seen similar but not identical.
Cheers,
Pyr.

No it doesn't expand on the IndyDan shirt. If that were the case, my pleats would be open all the time due to their location and me being a female.

On the Indy shirt the pleats on the pockets are stitched and on many military shirts and such they are not. If they are not, the fabric is creased and expands in a manner that allows more cargo in the pocket. On Indys shirt it just looks darn good.
The epaulets also had a real function when they first were introduced in the military, they were there to keep the strap of a shoulder bag in place! Nowadays they are just good looking and a good place for insignia. But I guess you already knew that...

Don't you just love being a woman? (It really does have it's advantages at times, though....

Don't you just love being a woman?
No, I'm quite happy being a man. I personally think that the only people who would enjoy being women ARE women, and the only people who would enjoy being men ARE men. Cross-dressers don't count though. -IJ

I always thought the strips on Indy's shirt were perhaps inspired by the
guayabera, a tropical shirt popular in the Caribbean and Latin America. Woven from 100% linen, an authentic
guayabera has pleats very similar to Indy's. Worn outside the trousers (untucked), it is acceptable in both formal and informal situations.
Ernest Hemingway wore a guayabera daily during his time in Cuba, making it his official 'uniform.' I understand that they are also very popular in Miami today.

This is too funny! Yes, Maryon, I love being a woman. There are many advantages, but I don't think we should list them, because then we might have some of these guys trying to get into Marion gear, which would be quite scary.

Let's see...a couple of razor blades later and...hmmm...no I think he's right. Plus the spilled coffee on the dress might give it away.
