US Wings Goatskin

Post by ron521 »

Have been thinking I'd like to get a BLACK leather jacket, but not a motorcycle jacket.
As a result of my very positive experience with my US Wings VIP Adventurer in brown cowhide, I am considering the same jacket in black goatskin.
I realize this is going "against the tide" a little bit, with everyone excited about the new "Legend" jackets.
While I like the pattern adjustments very much, I am still resistant to buying any kind of "distressed" or "aged" leather.
And since my cowhide VIP has worked out so well, am thinking of the closest thing I can find, just in black.

Would anyone care to share their experiences or photos regarding the US Wings goat? What differences in terms of texture or feel might I experience?

I had one Wings goatskin, and next to the VIP cowhide, it was my favorite offering they had. Problem was, it was a medium, and the sleeves were too short, so it went on to another fan (as most all of them do anyway)...but it's a fantastic hide, and one you'll enjoy.

Chewbacca Jones has a USW black goatskin he has often spoken very favorably of.

Well I bought a USWings black goat over a year ago for similar reasons: wanted a black jacket but not the usual fashion stuff you see. While I don't have a VIP version of one of their jackets , the USWings pattern is the USWings pattern. The goat hide is extremely tough and will take a lot of time before it shows any age. I did run it through the washing machine which helped relax the hide (wish I'd have known about _'s acetone trick, probably reduces some of the shine). It's lost some of its rubbery-ness. Nice pebble texture. The goat is thick and heavy. I'm photo posting challenged or I'd post some picks.

Has anyone checked out Wings site lately? The Signature Series Goatskin Indy jacket is going for $195.00. A US made jacket by Schott in goatskin for the price of thier least expensive import. Now that has got to be worth taking a look at!

Yes indeed. I admit to not liking it at first, but as it broke in I changed my mind. It is now one of my favorite jackets, and one of my most useful. It always draws compliments, even from people who are usually oblivious to such things. The key to the goatskin is getting it wet. Wear it in the rain as often as you can, and use water on the collar to shape it. It will take time to get the jacket broken in, but it's worth the effort.

Texture is slightly plasticy at first, but breaks in with lots of nice texture. Also the goatskin is a little stiff when new. Finally, I do prefer the black over the brown in goatskin.

Here I used it for a gray-scale Indy outfit;

And just a front and back set;

Wow! You're right. Their website has the goat for $195. Must be trying to get rid of them. I may have to take thisplunge.

I once had a new Wings Goat in hand and found that the snaps on the pockets were very hard to use. In fact, I was afraid I would rip them out by opening the pocket. Anyone else find the snaps to be difficult?

Word that rattled down the general info pipeline is that they're eliminating the goatskin Indy from inventory, and all goatskin received will be used for military contracts only from now on.

If you're looking to obtain a goatskin Wings Indy jacket, now is the time, as stock is being cleared out.

I , too, have had problems with their snaps in the past, but found after some 'exercise' of the snaps, they freed up just fine.

Seems to be the nature of that type snap too.

I had an old Avirex A2 years ago with these type snaps that were just as difficult to use, but after a while and use they starited to function perfectly.

You'd think that black would be a natural choice for an Indiana Jones jacket, but screen accurate stitch nazi's are everywhere, lol. I have a G&B black goatskin jacket. Black goatskin is great. At 200 bucks you can't beat it. I'm sure USW is scratching their heads at why they didn't sell, well maybe not. They know this bunch by now, lol.

The black was $240 or something last I checked, and at $195 for the brown, I popped for one of each. SA or not, their goat s awesome, and their jacket fits me perfect. With no more goat Indy's coming, it was time to jump. Been eyeing them for awhile.

Can anyone tell how large these jackets are cut? I am considering one, but since I am tall and thin (6'3", 160 lbs) I am afraid that even the Long models will be too wide for me.

I'm about a 39" chest, so I was looking at the size M-Long jacket. However, that is listed as having a 24" pit-to-pit measurement - about 2" wider than what I find usually fits me. I suppose I could go for a size S-Long instead, but I am quite certain the sleeves on that will be too short... :-k

I have been thinking of getting this Goatskin offering now that its on offer but after looking at the sizing specs chart and seeing they have no XS on offer, I am hesitant to give this a go. The smallest on offer - Small - seems large and too big for my build.

My experience so far has been that the Hero Jacket Cow, arrived slightly large but have shrink down a size to fit me properly. On the other hand, the Legend Import Old Cow was surprisingly is larger in size compared to the Hero, even though it is supposed to be the trimmest cut of all. The Legend looks baggy on my even though it is the same size as the Hero Cow.

But if the Goatskin is the same pattern as the Hero jacket perhaps it may shrink down a size as time goes by. Then I might give it a go after all.

I thought this deal was too good to pass up and it seems like so did everyone else. When I called to order they said have very few sizes left - from what I remember it was smalls, maybe a medium and some xxl's. SOmething like that. I was looking for a large or large long. Sold out. Rita at Wings was kind enough to go check the warehouse and even their return rack but not much left. Guess I did not pull the trigger fast enough. Hope some of you did.

Sorry to hear that, Gary. :(

Yep, folks forget that Wings is an internationally seen site, and we're not the ONLY ones who saw those go on sale.

A LOT of times a sale will pop up, and they'll literally be gone in minutes.

With the Chinese grabbing up any leather jackets they can ge their hands on, I'm surprised there were that many left in the other sizes you mentioned.

I wonder if the other jacket vendors are experiencing the same thing with their OTR stuff? :-k

Well apparently I was wrong. I spoke to Myke today and he said they had more sizes in the warehouse and he found me a large long. He also still had other sizes as well. You may want to check if you are interested in this jacket. Myke and the US Wings team were very helpful and I am pleased to be able to nail this jacket down.

I just looked and they are 387.00. Did I miss a fire sale somewhere? Luckily I found one on the Bay in goat for around this price.

Sometimes they have one day specials, so you gotta keep your eye on the site to catch a really good sale. The sale mentioned took place back in January.

That I did. I can't wait. I have a Todd's custom in cow, so Ill love having a more 'beat around' jacket. Im not a 'dress' leather kind of guy.

Originally I was planning to get the Legend in calfskin from US Wings and put my name on the list for that jacket. When it was decided that hide would not be made I switched over to the Legend in Horse because I had read good things about that leather from Wings. I had also read that it was to be US made. That changed when Bison took its spot in the US factory and I was told when the Legend horse is made it will be made overseas. Personally I wanted to support the American manufacturing industry and really wanted a Schott made jacket.

Years ago Michealson put me onto goatskin and G&B. I bought one but because of the tighter fit I found layering a problem which meant i could not wear the jacket when it got too cold. In fact I remember the first time I wore it out to a outdoor concert I was actually quite cold in it. Since I knew the US wings signature jackets are a looser cut and since I had the G&B, which is about as SA as I need, I started looking at those jackets in goat. It was kind of strange because one day the jacket was $337 then the next it was $227. The following week it was $195! As noted above I just felt that was a great price for a US made schott jacket in goat. So I ordered it. I originally ordered a large long but there was a problem with supply and so after a month of waiting for that jacket I called Wings and they said they had stock of large so I switched my order. Very glad I did because it fits great and is large enough to allow comfortable layering.

One thing that struck me about the jacket was that the leather seemed quite a bit thicker than the G&B. I thought some of This may have been because it was new vs a broken in jacket but when i compared collars and pockets the US Wings was thicker. With all the great pictures i have seen with the thick Legend US lamb I was pleased to get the thicker leather. I love the durability of goat (I have a lambskin jacket and I find it is really not designed for rough wear) and the quality of the US made Wings jacket. THe pockets are huge compared to the g&B (and actually look similar to the legend pockets). SA? Who knows but practical - yes. Especially for cold days like this week where I had to wear thick leather gloves. Plenty of room for them in this jacket.

Several times I have recalled what Chewbacca Jones said about his wings goat - that it is one of his favourite jackets. I can really see why.

This is a beautiful jacket.

I tip my hat to Sarge, Roz, Myke and the Wings team... :TOH:

I've posted these before, in another thread. This is my black US Wings goatskin.
Although there are a few details about the G&B which are nice, overall I like this jacket better. The US Wings fits better, and therefore FEELS better when wearing.
I sold an Expedition to finance this purchase. If it were possible to obtain an Expedition that fit the same way this jacket fits, I'd consider one again.
