Todd's Whip - 8ft or 10ft??

Hey guys, this is my first post here!
I'm getting a whip from Todd's at the end of the month and I'm torn as to what length of whip to go for. Bearing in mind, this will be my first whip.
I've heard people saying to go with the 8ft as it's easier to crack and all that jazz, but the 10ft couldn't be all that more difficult to crack, could it? All I'm asking is; does size really matter?
LOL. Read into that what you want. LMAO!!

Top o´the mornin´
and fáilte to COW. I have Todd´s 8 footer and I find it to be an extremely manageable length. It is actually my first 8 footer. The rest that I have are from 10 to 12 footers. So if you are just starting with with sport/hobby, the 8 footer would be the one to go with IMO.
Slàinte!

Thanks IndianaBravo for the greetings in my native language, but contrary to popular belief, less than 1% of Irish people actually speak it. LMAO!! And I'm part of the 99.9% who don't. LOL.
Regarding the whip, is the 10ft choice not exactly a smart option for a first timer? Thing is, this is probably the only whip I'll ever get (because of the sheer price of them) and I want it to look the best it can. So, does it really make a difference if I get the 8ft or 10ft?

You're new, so I'll go easy.
Be sure to use the search function as often as possible. This has been discussed. Here's some links. If you are going to be cracking the whip to learn, forget it. Get something else. If you want a prop, good choice. These threads some both sides. People who are happy with the product and can do minor cracking, and those who have had negative experience using it as a whip to learn and crack with often.

I only speak it on special occasions ( Har dee har har!) Seriously I concur with Whipdude on the different schools of thought regarding Todd´s whip. I just took out my 8 footer this afternoon and had a great time with it. How long it will hold together ? well, no one can say. With whips it´s pretty much " You get what you pay for". I guess it boils down to your budget and how deep you want to get into this mad hobby/sport. Graeme Roberts of Midlandwhips.com makes fine cowhide whips at great prices, as do Gus Caicedo and James Emery. Check out the "Whip Vendors" section and shop around a bit. Loads of fun!
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

Well, I'll not be playing around with it too much. I don't exactly live in an area where there's any suitable places for "whip-craft" practice. It really is more for show with the costume, really. But the odd crack here and there won't go amiss.

Then it should serve you fine.
Though I said the same thing when I bought mine-- I didn't really intend anything more than occasional cracking. But I've found it such a pleasurable, relaxing pastime, that I've used the whip considerably more than I figured I would.

If it's REALLY just prop material, you may wish to save even more and go with the Budget Whip. It's 10 foot, made for looks more than anything, and you can find it in the clearance section on Todd's site

Hello & Welcome!
I have always felt the 10 footers look best when coiled and/or hanging from a belt. My first "indy" whip was an 8 footer (not one of Todd's), but in time I found myself longing for a 10 footer....

Well, the whip will mostly be for show, but like I said, I DO want to give a few occasional cracks for the sake of it. I have to practice anyway coz when you dress as Indiana Jones at parties and people ask you to demonstrate your proficiency with the whip, you can't look like a novice, y'know? LOL.
