Another Sahari, Indy meets Bogie
Just mailed this one out and since Dave gave me some leeway I decided to make this 1930ish fedora with both Indy and Bogie influences, using the American style yet the rarer Marquee top creash. The Marquee crease is shaped more like a Marquee cut diamond than a tear drop or c dent top crease that was more common in American styled fedoras. By using it, I kept it closer to the homburg crease seen in all of the Indy fedoras, yet put an American twist on that crease. Here's a pic that shows the top crease from the top side.
Here is a front shot, and the full crown should fit the customer's face pretty good, I hope!
And here is a side shot.
And the back.
Plus the good thing is, if he doesn't like the crease job, all he has to do is to recrease it to say, a Raiders fedora.
Also on this hat, I used an non dimensional cut brim to mimic the era, with it being 2 3/4, which is enough to keep the sun off the sides of the face. I think it pulls off an Indy meets Bogie look fairly well, and even looks back to the hats that were considered when creating the Indy fedora. Regards, Fedora

Re: Another Sahari, Indy meets Bogie
I really like that brim cut, Steve. Reminds me of the cut on my 'Ford felt' 'Fedora' (from LC) hat you made me 5 years ago. It does indeed keep the sun off your neck!
VERY nice hat, my friend. Dave will be tickled!
By the way, that bash would look good in a dark green too, wouldn't it?
Regards! Michaelson

WOW! Steve, this is beautiful. You truly are a master hatter. I can't wait to get it. This is one of the classiest looking hats I've ever seen. You nailed exactly what I wanted...and I didn't even know what I wanted! I let out an audible gasp when I saw the picture. My wife asked what was wrong and I showed her the pictures. I know when she loves it too, its really a winner. Thank you so much, Steve.

Seriously!
Steve, I keep coming back and looking at this beauty. As many here know, I wear a hat every day. I even wear my hats when I play with my metal band. I told the boys in the band about the hat and know they haven't stopped asking me when the dang thing is coming in. My sincerest thanks to you, Steve, for putting up with me. You now know why I can only ever order hats from you and John...no other hatter can put up with me ! Quick question, though. Did you send this out to my new address? I think I sent you an address change. Either way, it doesn't matter as the old address is my parents' place.

And........it's........OUTTA HERE!!!!
Another home run hit by Steve Delk.
Dave is back, back, back....ooo, just missed it over the wall. But, what's happening?! Dave it climbing over the wall and putting it on!
Maybe it's the non-dim cut brim, but the crown seems a little shorter. What's the height on it?
Gotta love these Sahari hats.

Those non-dimensional cuts will indeed fool the eye when it comes to determining crown heights.

I sent it to the paypal address Dave. May be your parents house though, but someone will have to sign to recieve it. Should be there by Wed.
Thanks for the good words guys, and thanks for letting me know how to spell Marquis, had no idea how it was spelled.
The crown is 5 1/2 open crown and 5 inches once creased. I had alot of fun with this hat Dave, and got to play with it more than I get to do with the Indy fedoras. Figured you had enough of those Indy hats and might enjoy a little different look, without the hat being tapered. Thanks! Steve

Glad you had fun with this one, Steve. I wanted you to and it shows. You hatters are artists. Thats why I give you and John the room for creativity. Hopefully I will be able to get one more from you before you retire. And I don't mind a SMALL amount of taper. Anything too far past the taper seen in the Raiders hat, and it looks funny on me. And anything lower than 4 1/4'' inches on my head looks too short. This thing will look smashing. And ###### I need to change that paypal address. It'll be one year next week that I've been married and out of my parents house. Oh well. My sister should be home to recieve it.

Re: Another Sahari, Indy meets Bogie
I just got this hat. There really are no words to describe how beautiful this hat is. Its gorgeous, stupendous, heavenly, eutopic, ********...it goes on and on. This really is the most beautiful hat I have ever seen. I stopped by my parents' house to pick it up and my brother, who's nursing a broken ankle, says to me "You got a package...is it something cool?" So I told him lets open it and see. And before I finished opening the sacred white box and could even see anything but the liner, my brother shouts out "Whoa! It is cool!" and plopped it on his head, humming the Raiders theme song as he tried to hop away with it (broken ankle, remember). And was he ever right. It is cool. This is the coolest hat I've ever seen. This is exactly what I told Steve I wanted "My own version of the Raiders hat. The hat I'd want to take with me to make some kind of Archaelogical find and ward off evil." Steve, you have delivered yet again. You have made my ultimate adventure hat. It's just so #### nice, I don't know that I can go and get the #### thing dirty, following old Obi Wan on some #### foolish adventure...

Re: Another Sahari, Indy meets Bogie
Just a quick note to add on this matter:
Dave, I know you now a whole lot better than I did when I first joined the ranks of this Community (heck, when I first started reading your comments I thought you were a DOCTOR - pretty sure I even called you "Doc" a few times...)
Point being, I know a whole lot more about you now than I ever did...
I know more about the kind of man you are, the husband & family man you are, the character you are and the kind of friend you are...
On top of all that, I'm proud to CALL you a friend (as well as a "brother from another mother")
Now, do I know you as well as I'd like to (or hope to one day)?
Nah... not yet... although I figure I've got a pretty good bead onya (considering we haven't even MET in person yet!)
But my point is, I feel like I kinda' "get" who Dave Ulloa IS...
And I want you to know, that the minute I saw this gorgeous, latest creation of Steve's ALL I could think was
"Maaannnn... That hat is SO DAVE!"
Cheers, buddy... enjoy your new and amazing Delk Hat!
Your head is truly in the hands of Master Hatters!

Thanks Fox. And yes, I can safely say you sit nicely in my rank of friends and I feel comfortable calling you as such. You hit the nail on the head. This hat is very much me. It hasn't come off my head since getting it on this afternoon. I'm off to rehearse with my band now and its coming with me. I always take one with me (as usual) but I really want the boys to see this one. And, I don't know you as well as I'd like to either. One day, we'll be able to sit down and talk for a while over some scotch over in beautiful Nova Scotia. Until then, your my brother from the Great White North that I've yet to meet.
As for the pics, Mark, glad you finally got to use that icon. I'll get some pics up tomorrow. You gotta see this hat on me!

No fraid not. One of the kids who visits here I guess. Never noticed it till after I took the pics and shipped out the hat.
Re: Another Sahari, Indy meets Bogie
Very pleased and happy you liked the hat Dave. It was fun to make and a nice change from the regular Indy fedoras in brown I generally make 99.999 per cent of the time.
I was also able to use a bit of creativity with this hat, and actually tried 3 other top creases before I decided the Marquis crease was the winner. I am just glad I bought that Marquis tipper(a piece of wood carved into that shape) along with some others from ebay years ago. I think this hat MAY be the first one I ever used it on, but with my memory? It just looked better than a C dent of teardrop to me anyways. And I wanted to make you something no one else had too. Sorry to get here so late, should have read this one before. Steve, what a beatiful hat. The color combo is perfect, like, wow. One day I'll branch out into other colors (just started w/a grey) and this would look nice.
Nice job my friend and Dave you enjoy that lid and can't wait to see some pics.

I know. I stink for not having any pictures up. All I can offer right now is a bad photo I took in the bathroom mirror. Sorry. Real photos soon, I promise.
And Steve, the more I wear this hat, the more I fall in love with it. I have a vintage Mallory that is almost dead on for this color, but its an Open Road style with matching thin ribbon. My mother-in-law always gives me some comment about my sexuality when I wear that hat. But when I wore this one the other day, all she could say was "Wow, thats a nice hat!"

It's a beauty, Dave... no arguement from me.
But let me do you (and the rest of us) a favor:
I've flipped your photo around so that we can see you as you'd look if we were looking straight at you (as opposed to seeing your backwards reflection)...
And this way we can see that gorgeous bow on the side it truly appears on.
Congrats again on the gorgeous new lid, my friend... can't wait to see a few more shots of it!

Thank you my friend! Dave, I know I am predjudiced, but that hat really suites you as it is in great proportion with your face, which is what I was aiming after. And while it has an exotic crease in the top, the front looks very Indyish and therefore very good. (I can't seem to like any hat but the Indy fedora, or something similiar. Indy spoiled me forever in hat choices)
I really like that brim on you too! That's a 2 3/4 inch brim and it still looks Indyish to me.
That body was already several years old in fact the whole group of Sahari bodies was bought in 07 for a customer who then did not buy a single one of them! So, they have some age on them already which helps to kill the live fur. Back in the old days, most good hatmakers actually would age the fur itself after carroting and removal from the hides. So, they only used aged fur when making their hats, which according to them made better hats, and probably make them less suceptable to premature taper, not to mention that aging the fur also mellows it out.
So, I would imagine that the next best aging would be the raw body itself, which all of these Saharis were. I noticed that the aging in moth balls and triple wrapped plastic bags also darkened up the color a shade or two which I liked as it got rid of some of the white in this color. Even pouncing the body did not remove the new color it was more than just skin deep. I think the aging is responsible. Ah me, another long post again. Off I go! Fedora

Re: Another Sahari, Indy meets Bogie
No, keep typing, Steve! And thanks on the compliment. You really nailed those proportions. As for the crease, I did define the side creases just a bit more as I usually like a nicely defined side crease, but that is all. And, I love this block. Really suits my face. You got everything about this hat right. And the ribbon width is perfect for these dimensions. The weather here in Miami has been pretty bad as of late and this hate has gotten a lot of wear. It's been rained on pretty heavily and it keeps looking better and better each time. I'll get some real pics posted this week. Promise.
