Is that a whip on your belt, or did an intestine pop out?

Not being a regular visitor to the whips department, I may be asking a redundant question, but it's a new one to me. I like the look of the short whip Indy has on his belt in the Cairo ambush scene. You know, the still where we see Indy from behind as one of the attackers swings a club at him? Can anyone tell the length of that particular whip? It looks smaller than most of the other shots - maybe a 6-footer?

thanks.

schwammy, I believe someone told me that was an 8 footer...I could be wrong, though! I'm certainly no expert!

Well, I think for the belt he usually carried a 10 ft whip, and an 8ft for when he actually used it. So I believe that it may look smaller because it's an 8ft whip, not a 6ft whip.

According to everyone I've ever talked to, he carried an 8 footer on his belt, and swinging and action whips ranged from 10 - 46  feet. 46 being for the swing over the alley at Brunwald.

A 46 foot whip? Wow. I wonder how much that would cost...or the strength it would take to crack! I am guessing this was a typo.

Nope, that's what I've heard, a 46 ft. steal re-enforced whip was used for swinging scenes.

Amazing! If only regular whips had that durability to swing from. I could imagine the looks I'd get from my neighbors now. My 8 ft. Joe Strain is a great whip, but comes up a bit short on swinging ability.

Imagine all the fun the stunt men had making the Indiana Jones series. "Take this 46 whip and swing from it when I say action." ...although I'm sure the injuries more than outweigh any initial fun.

FYI,

The whips for the Indy series ranged from 6 to 16 feet. David Morgan supplied a cable-cored 47-foot whip for a swinging scene in The Mask of Zorro. That's only what I've heard...

For what it's worth, a whip maker friend of mine (Steve Koliski) has a 40-foot whip. Having tried to crack it myself, I can verify that it's difficult. You shouldn't have too much trouble cracking a long whip like that, though...If you bench-press over 200 pounds on a regular basis.
