Indy Gear Hanger Display - Egyptian Theme

Hi to all
Like the rest of you I am nuts about my gear, but one thing bugs me, just how to display it. The hat, the whip, the bag, the holsters. What do you do with all this stuff?
Various members have made framed displays of the gear which look great and another member previewed a wooden display for gear. All very good attempts.
However, I wanted to go in a different direction. I have been working on a concept for an Indy themed display on to which I can hang my gear. I wanted to create something that could almost look like a piece of ancient art, as if it were found in a pyramid and brought back by Indy himself.
I looked at several Egyptian illustrations to match the style and have come up with a Raiders themed display. I stylised both the headpiece and Ark to look more symmetrical and in keeping with the illustration technique.
There are 4 hangers: 1 for the hat (top); 1 for the whip (bottom); 1 for the bag (left) and 1 for the holsters (right). You can see the hat placement in the guide visual.
The dimensions are: W360mm (14.17") x H513mm (20.19").
This will be laser etched out of wood and then painted in an antiqued gold finish.
See what you guys think.
Very best
Mark

This is gorgeous, Indy Andrews!
Perhaps the only thing left to ask might be:
How might a C.O.W. Member go about obtaining something like this for themselves?

I can't wait to see this done. Really cool design. My only concern would be that when the gear is on it, you won't be able to see it!

Thanks for your comments guys.
I am currently getting the piece priced up. Whatever it is I am going to have one made, but if the price works out and it is viable, I may offer some to fellow members.
I'll keep you guys posted.
And yes it is a shame that the design will be covered, but you've gotta have somewhere to hang yer hat don't ya?

True, but perhaps an alternative design where the imagery is positioned in such a way that the gear hangs down below it? That way you always see the artwork.
Still, this should be a very nice piece and I look forward to seeing it! Nice work.

The thing is I do want to see my gear on display, I just wanted an attractive display on which to hang it all.
The alternative would be to have the 4 hooks below the Ark itself in a row. This would mean that the headpiece could be lowered down toward the Ark and the piece would not have to be so big. Whatever way though the hat would need to be a good way below the design so as not to cover it up with the brim.
Therefore I have had a look and have come up with this...
There are only 3 hooks to hang gear on now on the staff vertically placed.
The overall width could be reduced now to W300mm (12").
Let me know what you think.
Cheers

OK maboot38 I concede this looks much better...
I am very happy with the alteration, see what you guys think.
3 hooks:
Top Hook - 90mm length for bag and hat
Middle Hook - 70mm length for holsters/belts
Bottom Hook - 50mm length for whip
Obviously you can configure it however you like, but this way your gear will be nicely stacked and the hat will sit atop the other items nicely. Plus the back brim of the hat only partially covers up the bottom of the Ark, so as not to obscure the design.
The other bonus is that the new design can be made much narrower than the first around W280mm (11").
I have plans to do a design appropriate to the setting of each movie for gear displays. These designs will be able to be reduced in scale to have a single hook underneath them for whips only. Those gearheads who have a whip from each movie can then have a bespoke display for each to hang their whips on.
Cheers

Your talents know no bounds mateā¦ again, a spectacular piece from you and I agree the second version is (to my eye) a better solution.
I know you have said that you are new to this Indy prop collecting thing but in my opinion you were ALWAYS an Indy gearhead - you just took a little time finding the door!!
Well done and cheers a bunch for sharing!!

It sure will be strong enough to hold a jacket on. I would suggest the bottom hook so as not to obscure all of the other gear.
However, I lay awake last night thinking of the possible configurations of hanging gear on the display and have revised the design once more.
There are still 3 hooks, but they are now horizontally placed underneath the Ark. The middle hook would be the longest to hold the jacket and hat. Then the hooks left and right can be used to hold the bag, gunbelt and holsters and of course the whip.
See what you think guys. I think this should work real well.
Cheers

Mark, can we see the superimposed fedora over that third design?
I'm curious as to how close to the brim of a hanging hat the two "side" pegs (and the items they'll hold) will come to the brim of a fedora that might be on the middle peg.
Thanks

Sure Mitch here you go.
The main problem is that whichever way the hooks are configured, there is always going to be overhang. That is why design version 1 was laid out as it originally was. Problem was of course that this configuration covered up the design.
So what I propose is that the middle hook is the longest and would suggest that the jacket is placed on and then the hat over the top of the jacket. After all most of us grab our jackets and hats to go out, but very few (fortunately) have the need of a gun belt and holster! The bag, gun belt and holster and bullwhip can then be hung on other the left or right hooks which are set back and not as long as the middle hook.
Essentially to make this viable for any interested parties we need to ensure that the wooden design backboard is not too large. Currently the size is W300mm (12") x H405mm (16") So the hooks are roughly 70mm (2.8") apart. Now we could increase the overall size back to W360mm (14.7") which is not an issue as the artwork can be sized to whatever dimensions. However, this will cost more as the wood is that much larger.
I think that this will still look cool though.
Let me know what you guys all think.
Best

You beat me to it, my friend! Having the middle peg standing out the furthest from the plaque was exactly what I was going to suggest!

Thanks guys for your continued positive comments and help in nailing the configuration.
I am planning for the backboard to have counter sunk keyhole fitments on the reverese to hang it on the wall.
I am also working on different designs for the otter movies. These would be much smaller with a single hook just for the whip. As many people have a whip from each film, I thought this might b a great way to display them.
Oh and Mark, yep I've all been a closet gear head and I'm proud to finally come out!
Best to all

Hi to all
An update for you guys...
Well as mentioned in previous posts the plan was to laser engrave the design into wood. However, the process is tricky as the laser tends to burn the wood.
So we decided to have a look at alternative materials and have instead created the "master" out of a sheet of polished black acrylic. The laser engraving process took 6 hours to do, getting deeper with each pass.
Ideally I wanted to offer these displays out to the members here, but at 6 hours a piece, the price would simply be too high.
We are instead going to age the master, take a few chips out here and there on the design and a few small cracks to simulate age. We will then mould the master and cast out resin blanks that can be finished however desired: aged rock; wood; antiqued gold etc. Finally the doweling will be added onto which the gear can be displayed. This will be a far more viable route to be able to offer the display to any interested parties.
I should have the black acrylic master in my hands tonight and will share more images then. In the meantime I thought you might like to take a look at the piece during the process.
Take care
Mark

Hello everyone
It's been a while since my last post, work has taken over my life the past month and a half.
Although time has been somewhat limited of late, we have managed to finish up adding texture to the surface of the master for the gear display.
The master has been primed in grey ready for moulding, which will be done later in the week.
I cannot wait to get the first resin pull to paint this baby up.
Hope you like it.

Some of us not only have different whips from the movies, we also have differnet hats from different scenes and different movies. So extra hangers for the extra gear will be very welcome.
Instead of laser engraving, have you looked into wood working with a precision cutter, maybe a programable type of router?
This is an awsome project and great artwork for some thing functional and needed by many. I can't wait to see the finished product and pricing.
