Indy hats bashed measurements?

Post by fenris »

I've tried the search function, but kept getting zilch...

What are the bashed crown measurements of each movie hat?

RAIDERS:
Front: ?
Back: ?

TOD:
Front:
Back:

LC:
Front:
Back:

Thanks! :TOH:

You might try the main page for some of the answers. ;)

Also keep in mind that not everyone is this hat size and due to different facial shapes, etc., will need to follow their own path for a good fit, brim dimesions, height of the crown, etc.

That's the first place I went... but the only measurements there are open crown for the Raiders. :-k

If you look at this thread

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=47696

It has both the AB and Yojimbo's Raiders hat side by side for comparison and has the dimensions of both the bashed hat.

Hope that helps,

Because the ribbon is a constant at 39 mmm, you can extrapolate the crown.

You may find that the Raiders crown was around 4 1/2" bashed, and the LC hat looks to be less, at around 4 1/4" give or take.

I think we see variations in crown height and brim width in all of the Indy films. The brim on the hat Bernie had in hand, a film hat, featured a 2 13/16th front and 2 9/16ths on the sides of the brim. The open crown height on this hat was around 5 3/8ths, but the shrinkage had made the crown pointy, so.....

On the Stetson hats that they placed in the film(s) the open crown height was 5 inches, brim 2 5/8 by 2 3/8. This was also the specs on the Temple hat that Stetson probably still sells. Plus, Stetson told me that 5 inches open crown was the max they made their dress hat line.

On the Raiders hat, the crown, it looks like the height of the front pinch is 3 ribbon widths, or 4 1/2 inches app. And that is about the gist of what I know. But in Raiders, it looks like the brim varied, probably due to Swales hand cutting the brims and not being exact.

Raiders Hat:
Front : 4-1/2" max
Rear : 3-1/2" min to 3-3/4" max

On the front of the hat, I measure from the brim break to the top of the front pinch. On the rear of the hat, I measure from the brim break up to the bottom of the "channel" in the center bash. Surveyors love to measure.

It's time to break out the ruler for my hats... I think my front and back is too high. Probably why I get a front taper.

Didn't you do some measurements on the side dents at one time?

My Fed IV is a tad taller than 4.5" in the front while the PB is now spot on at 4.5".

I've reblocked my Christy's again a few days ago and I could've sworn it shrunk the crown height, but whenever I measure the top of the front pinch, it's exactly 4.5". But when I look at it compared to the Fed IV and PB, it looks shorter... I lined them up again on my bed and found that the humps on my PB are taller than on the Fed IV and Christy's. No wonder the PB looks more Raider-ish compared to the other two.

As for the PB having an almost purplish (well, under certain lighting) ribbon, I fixed that with a black marker. It now looks more like a dark brown. I'm pretty sure that was a bad idea especially if it rains. Hehe.
