too fast?

I've checked the records and it's been 4 weeks since I ordered my first whip. Now I have 4, 5 after Sunday probably. Do I need an intervention or is it like this for all of us. I see pics and vids of people with stacks and stacks of whips but you gotta figure it's from years of collecting. Is tripping over whips that are on the floor due to lack of space with all the other ones and having all my neighbors refer to me as "that crazy whip guy" in my future?

I think it's safe to say that you are on the road to becoming the "Old Cat Lady" of whips. Is that a bad thing?
I don't know. But considering my hat collection, I really can't... and shouldn't... judge. All I can say is, if you have the cash and will use them, you'll top out and calm down when you're satisfied. However, if you DON'T have the dosh, and you just can't help yourself... maybe you do need help. If I had the money and went cracking all the time, I might go nuts. Even with my lids, one a week has not been a financial option. If it had been, though... !!!
So, if it's within your means, man, enjoy the madness.

Beautiful whip,
as to the neighbors hassling you, I'd tell them to mind there own business, cause when they mind there business then they won't be minding yours,
.
Collecting whips is no different than say collecting matchbox cars, guns, knifes, dolls and so on, some might say its a sickness,(usually because there not interested) I say as long as your not living in your garage while your collection is living in the house, then its just enjoyment

Thanks guys. I suppose I needed some affirmation. To be fair Ive only bought 2 whips and made the other 2(3). Its much cheaper to make them than to buy them. At least until I graduate to leather.

2 new whips in 4 weeks isn't too bad (as long as the bills are paid and there is food in the fridge).
I'm not counting the ones you made as that is different than pulling out the credit card and ordering another whip. I'd count those as just practicing a new skill.

if my neighbors ever do complain i may just stop mowing my lawn and convert my garage into the temple from Raiders. That'll fix em. Anyone know where I can get a 12' round boulder?

As the others said before...
At one point I had 15 whips, most of my own creation, but not all, and there does come a point where you do get satisfied, sort of. Then again, it's true that if you really enjoy the craft of braided items, such as whips, then it is like buying paintings or sculptures; it's just a different art form.
I think I could be very happy with 3 or 4 whip; and if I had to choose this is what they would be:
-A 6 1/2' Zorro-like whip
-An 8' Indy bull
-A 10' Indy bull
-A toss-up between a 7' stockwhip or an 8' target bullwhip with a 10" handle
And if I really had to choose only one single whip, then it wold be an 8' Indy bullwhip.
Cheers,
Franco
PS-Sorry I got side tracked from your questions

I like to cover the bases like that too. One of everything. 6', 8' 10'(for xmas if I can hold out).
Revolver, auto, shotty, rifle you get the picture.
Then you mentioned stockwhips. I'm a little stockwhip-curious right now. They are SO fast, on the downside though They are SO fast.

Only advice on this subject that I can give from experience is "quality" not "quantity"..

Here's a quick update to my latest efforts.
#3. a 5'6' red/black ....I dont know if I'll ever put the turks head on it.too many gaps and it's got a tumor where the thong gets attached to the handle.
#4. A 5'8' brown. Also with no knots and don't know if it ever will. Again its gaps and the whole tumor thing
#5 while it's not a bullwhip, so far its my favorite. I got my new books , Ron Edwards Making Whips and the David Morgan pair Whips and whipmaking and Braiding Fine Leather about 3/4 of the way through the whip but I got to try a couple things. Mainly a turks head and some french whipping. There's still a couple gaps both in the plaiting and the T-head. I'm sure more practice and a few thorough reading of the books will start to help.
It's a 3' with 18" strands Galley Whip (I think). It's loaded in the turkshead with the biggest nut I could find at the surplus store. I think its 3/4"
