Jacket collar

In the opening of Raiders when Indy is entering the temple you can see that his jacket collar is turned up at the back. Now at first I never really though much of it. But now I have noticed this with many jackets or coats in many films of various periods and in every day life with people on the street. Is it a fashion/style thing that people do this, etiquette or just to stop the rain (or insects in Indy's case) getting down the back of your neck?

Yeah, strange you should mention that as I too noticed the same thing with the upturned collar only a week or so ago when watching raiders (I was trying not to watch the movies until the DVDs come out, but failed...)
I figured it was borne out of neccessity in that scene - it's the only time his collar is upturned I believe - because of the spiders which appear on Indys back later in the scene. A 'practical irregularity' if you like.

Yo Ken! I figured the collar was up to protect Harrison from the spiders on his back. You can clearly see them when he splits open the wall of web. Well maybe... who knows?

I concur.

I still holding out!! It's tough, though.

Ken, I think those 8-legged creatures are "arachnids" and related to scorpions and horshoe crabs.
Cheers!

Yes and No.
From what I can remember, turing your collar up meant you were cool (slang for very good). In the states, there was a situation comedy called Happy Days that was set in the 1950's where a character named "The Fonz" turned his leather jacket collar up.
I was born in the 1970's but hollywood portrays the cool or hip as doing that. (See also: James Dean and to a lesser extent Danny Zuko)
However in Indy's situation, he turned the collar up for protection.

Ya know, Joe, Spiders probably weren't Indy's only concern. There could've been flying insects around too

Let me attest that I was out on an air force base a while back and the desert wind there was really gusting. Now at 6am in the morning, that wind was blistering cold and add the wind chill factor to it, it was miserable. So you'll really want to cover every exposed skin on your body, including the back of your neck. So I flipped the collar of my jacket up and let me say, it helped a lot!
Just my 2 cents.
