Schubert Hats--"Australian Model"--Clipper hat review

When I heard that our own Yojimbo Jones was venturing into the hatmaking arena, based on what I had seen of how he accurate a Raiders look he was achieving, I decided it was a good time to get one of my personal grails, the Clipper Hat (yes, I’m that guy that got the whole Clipper thing started for him).

I received my Schubert Hats, Australian model a couple of days ago and I couldn’t be more pleased. The bash had popped out a little, so I'm working it back in (so any problem inherent in the bash are all mine, not Kurt's and this explains why the bash is sharper in the last two pics than the first since I'd worked its some more). The hat is a very substantial rabbit that feels like it could take a ton of abuse. The pouncing job is excellent with a nice smooth finish. The brim was nice and floppy right out of the box. The crown, while a little stiff at first, is really beginning to break in as I wear it and keep working the bash. The ribbon work is very good as is the stitching. The sweat is black with a gold band and Schubert hats written in cursive font. Very classy as is the plain white liner. As far as the feel of the sweat, it is very nice and soft and conforms well to the head. As for the ribbon, Kurt and I had a lot of discussions on ribbon width (and I know this has been discussed in one of his threads here as well). In the end I went with the standard Raiders ribbon width, based solely on personal preference. I’m sure you can get a wider ribbon for the hat if you feel that’s more SA.

There has already been a thread on YJ’s efforts to get as close to the Clipper hat in color as possible. No easy task as arguments have raged over this hat’s color for years. However, to my eye and in my mind, he has gotten EXTREMELY close to the color you see on screen, which is exactly what I was going for.

The shape is pure Raiders. I know that YJ has put a lot of energy into working on getting the block shape right and it shows up in spades once you have the finished hat in hand. I think he really nails the block shape.

I have searched for the Clipper hat for a while. I bought an Akubra in moonstone but never could “grow into it”. Nothing against the hat, but the color was more CS grey than Raiders and, as has been well documented, I never could get the center bash deep enough without it riding on my head.

This hat has delivered everything I was looking for and more. I couldn’t be happier with it and look forward to wearing it with my wardrobe that doesn’t venture into “earth” tones.

Here's some pics (ignore the grimace on the last couple. It's not the hat, I promise. It was 90 degrees + and bright as could be!)

Nice lid Crismans!
Even nicer '51 shoebox! (Please tell me it still has a flathead in it [-o< The car, not the hat ;) )

Yeah, it's my Dad's 51 and it has the original flathead six. I thought it and the hat went together very nicely.

Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I love that lid and, to me it's, very SA. The colour of the clipper seems to change each time I watch Raiders, so I'm never decided on it. :-k

Still, great looking lid especially in the last 2 shots, the side profile is just perfect to my eye. :D

Looks nice. :M:

I'll be interested in seeing how it holds up after use in a cold, wet Kentucky winter. THAT'S when you can really tell the staying power of a good hat!

Regards! Michaelson

That might take a while.... this last one was wet and cold, but that seems to be a rarity anymore....

And Crismans, great lookin hat! But I have to admit, you look much less like Harrison Ford than your avatar suggests :-s

Edit: I also like the close enough Michaelson gear ya got in the last two pics :M: :rolling:

True, if I face a bright light and squint REAL hard at the photo, you do indeed favor the roommate, in a seriously disturbing way..... :-k

The car photo does indeed favor one of my old avatars, doesn't it?

It was unintentional homage!

And I can't wait to wear this hat and break it in some. It really is a great hat.

Mitch,

Only two smilies and one all CAPS word?!

You're slipping man!

Back to the topic at hand, the lid does look good.

Jeff, Don't Panic!

I'm just mellowing out a little in my sunset years.
;)

But for the record, any percieved drop in use of emphasis or enthusiasm was certainly not meant as a slight to the maker of this fine hat!

Very nice!

I like the darker gray than the CS hat. Not that I don't love it too!

What are these running?

I'm so glad Crisman likes his hat and that it does suit him really well. (Which is not MY doing!) Love the front shot with the car.

Riothamus, the hats are currently going for $349 to COW members.

cheers, Kurt.
