. . . so that it looks sort of like an Akubra Stockman. It seems like there's a trick to it beyond just steam and fingers...

The weight of a wider brim works against you. It might be necessary to get some spray stiffener so it will hold. Many of the on-line hat shops carry it.

I've got my akubra doing a decent curl with much rolling and spraying but to be honest...the best way to have the curl is to have a head shaped like HF. A long oval head where the hat is pulled on from the front and back makes a perfect curl....for the rest of us it doesn't work that well. I've got a round head and my hat no matter what won't do the curl unless I put it there.
I heard the PB used to make their hats for customers shorter in the front and back on purpose so no matter what you'd get the curls.

bsj, I don't think that's the kind of 'curl' jculpep3 is looking for. That's more a warp than a curl. The Stockman has a classic outback shape that gracefully curls up the sides and swoops down the front and back, like so;
The other option is to wait until the hat has become so pliable and obedient that you can curl and uncurl as much as you like. I known only one or to people who've gotten that far.

He said best way, that would be a flange you are looking for.

Play with it. Roll the brim like you would roll a piece of paper. If you watch old westerns you see the cowboys twisting and pinching the hats. I fact if you watch the Indiana Jones extra features on DVD you will see Ford doing the same thing between takes.

He's not curling the edge of the brim. Besides he asked for the best way to curl the edge of the brim. That's using a flange.

So, with that, the answer has been given and we may as well lock this one down.
