Just to clearify a question...

Is it an absolute confirmed fact that the Raiders gloves are the Wells-Lamont 1130's? Or is it that through multiple viewings of Raiders, it has been decided that the 1130's are simply the most screen accurate in appearance?

I ask because in another post, someone mentioned that they only want the WL-1130's because those are THE gloves, but a vague, faded, JD-induced haze of a memory seems to be clawing at the back of my head recalling that there isn't really iron-clad verification of the W-L1130's as the confirmed gloves.

PLEASE correct me if I am wrong, and it has been verified.

I, like others I imagine, have gloves very similar to the WL-1130 model, and accept that they are not Wells-Lamont, but I am a sponge in thirst of knowledge of all things Indy, and this is a question that has been poking at the back of my mind.

Any thoughts.....?

Ok, the Readers Digest condensed version.....Paramount supplies their studios with materials for production work. They contract for bulk items by the truck load, and gloves for production workers is among those items. Paramount has a standing contract with Mid-West and Wells Lamont for those gloves for all their studio contractors and subcontractors. Ford had to borrow a pair from a Paramount studio grip when shooting the film, as they never bothered to outfit him with a pair, so he was handed either a pair of Mid-West or Wells Lamont leather gloves. For several years, it was assumed that the glove was a Mid-West, but folks finally settled on the Wells Lamont based on clear still frames from the movie. That's how it came to be.....or at least in the condensed version.... Verification? Phone calls with Paramount props personnel back in the 80's, and copies of sales receipts to Paramount from the late 1970's. Regards. Michaelson

No rules have changed. Ford said he borrowed a pair from a grip on set, and just stuck them in his pocket. The 1130's have been the work glove of choice of Paramount for years, so you're right on target. What in the info above made you think you were off track? : Regards. Michaelson

The 1130's are as accurate as you can get in this day and age! According to indygear.com the #1123 were the most accurate, but have been discontinued.

Owning a pair of 1130's...and having paused my "Raiders" tape so much it thinks it should automatically stop in certain places...I wholeheartedly concur that the Wells-Lamont 1130's are as close as we're likely to get, as far as the gloves go. There are some great shots of these in the Raven Bar fight scene, as well as when Indy is "stuck" on the grill of the German truck.

I don't suppose you have images you could post? I always thought Indy's gloves were white, but the 1130's are yellow. I was thinking the 1770's were closer, but maybe the tint on my TV needs adjustment.

I always thought they were yellow, all be it a very DIRTY yellow. :

Although in some scenes the lighting etc. is deceptive and the onscreen tones are sort of knocked-off a little. Maybe the DVD's will answer these questions and more? :

I knew about HF borrowing the gloves, as that is solidified in the annuls of Raiders Common Knowledge, but I thank you for the explanation regarding the Wells-Lamont connection to Paramount. That's all the info I needed. Once again, your vast knowledge has impressed me

I hate to throw a wrench into the works but here's the problem I am running into.

These are the 1130's I can currently find.



Here are a pair I picked up a few years ago at a Home Depot.



Notice the difference in construction around the thumbs. Notice on the older pair, the double stiching runs up the length of the hand.

The newer pair are more comfortable and probably more durable but don't "fold" like the gloves we see on screen.

Now, my personal mystery is this pair.



I picked them up in 1993 when working at a paint store and they were already used and stiff. I put some glove oil in them and brought them back to life. I don't know how old they "really" are or who they were made by. But they look like the same pattern as the pair of 1130s.

I'm still waiting for Segei to chime in. I believe he is in the Midwest camp.

On a side note, I've got my 1130's and continue to look for Midwest gloves. I've been unsuccessful for year. In fact, I'd like another pair of 1130s and cannot locate them either. (Yes, I've tried Wal-Marts as well as Home Depot). The search and adventure continues........

Oh My Gawd! I have not been able to find a pair of Wells-Lamont's ANYWHERE in Canada. However...I have 3 pairs (in assorted condition) that are EXACTLY the same as Pyro's pic of the newer 1130's. EXACTLY the same. I got them from Canadian Tire (an automotive-based hardware type store. Pep Boys with lawnmowers and light bulbs ..)

Now then...Canadian Tire has a habit of contracting many different manufacturers of stuff, then slap their own Moto-master logo on it, and sell it at a discount as their own. Tires, car batteries, tools, what-have-you. Theoretically, it's possible that Canadian Tire has simply contracted Wells-Lamont to make the 1130 work glove, then put their own name on it. Either that, or there is MAJOR copying goin on. But right now, I have those exact gloves.

(p.s. For those goin to the First Annual Toronto, Canada Indy Gear mini-Summit, I think a trip to Canadian Canoe is in order!)

Just got my new Wells-Lamont 1130 today at the Walmart down in Long Beach for 8.33 plus tax which comes out to 9.02. My pair looks exactly like Pyro's new 1130 pic. The color, stiching and style looks exactly the same. They are pretty comfortable. The tag says Wells Lamont Grips, grain cowhide leather and keystone thumb. The pair is made in China.

These arethe Midwest 851s in deerskin.
very close to the original WL1123s but are probably THE softest and toughest feeling glove you'll ever wear.
A bit pricey at 18.00 but worth every cent!

and something I just discovered on the Wells Lamont website, they have 2 different divisions, general and industrial.
They both list model 1130s but the indusrtials look like Pyros older pair while the general ones look like hiscurrent.

Does anyone have pics of the back of the glove? Do they have an elastic band running across the wrist area? I seem to recall the gloves at Wal-Mart and the local feed and hardware stores having those bands, and I want to be sure I'm getting the closest kind. Thanks.

Pschtyckque, the 1130 that I've got has the elastic band on the front. Sorry I don't have a picture of it handy right now but from this official picture from Wells Lamont's website, you can see the elastic band which is similar to mine. Except, the color of my pair is not that yellow, it's the same as Pyro's new pair. And there's a Well's Lamont horse-head logo on the lower left hand corner of the left-hand glove.

These are my Fairfield Buckskin 801's. Purchased in 1994 (well before my Indy collecting commenced) and used quite heavily, I believe my dad picked them up for me at one of the local grain elevators. Those of you living rurally should try this route.

My new 1130's (courtesy of Zohar) are the lighter shade of yellow, as per the first pair above. They are great gloves, good for driving and quite warm too!
Mine still look a little too new, would like to darken 'em down a little as they look quite dressy at the mo. but I don't wanna shorten their useful life or ruin then with some mud and oil etc.
Any top mitt-tipps : ?

No one is going to beleive this, but I just won a pair of Wells & Lamont 1123's on ebay!! BRAND NEW!! Ill post pics when they get here.

I'm a newby when it comes to Ebay and I watched those things for almost 5 days and within the last 2 hours no one else had bid on them and I thought they were my... and then... I forgot about it...then got the dreaded email message...

Oh well, they're just a pair of gloves!

What is this you speak of?

I did have another, cheaper set of gloves that were a bit on the yellow side. My wife decided to dirty them up by wearing them while dumping trash bins after our local Celtic Faire. There were some rank and nasty things. I doubt I'll be using those gloves ever again.

Careful with the yard work. I bought a great pair of Indy gloves, and used them to pull weeds to get a bit of a distressed look. Unfortunately, they looked TOO distressed!!! (yes, there IS such a thing) so I bought another pair. Sure enuff, the wife used THEM to pull weeds the next time, instead of the old ones, so I hadda buy ANOTHER pair! So so far I have gone thru 3 pairs. Pics will be provided from the Canuck Summit this weekend when I bring'm for show n' tell.

That *****. Is there any sort of stain or oil I can put on them just to darken them a bit?

Do some rockclimbing or rope climbing, rope swinging and they'll be perfectly distressed in one or two excursions. Or drag yourself along grabbing the grease and oil strewn underbelly of a moving vehicle, that works as well.

LOL! Yeah you know me pretty well. I just like the Midwest gloves better. I wouldn't loose sleep on it if the DVD does show they were the 1130's. I just like the fit and leather better. The buckskin on the Midwest 850, well is much better than the full grain cow of the 1130.
