It's a womans hat - got it for my sister, and to get my hands on a 360 HJ. The bow is at the back of the hat, so this is the side view. Velour finish brown rabbit, 4 1/2 inch crown. "New Bond Street, Herbert Johnson, London" is the only info inside.

This is it! This is what they used to make Indy's hat! Sorry, couldn't resist the idea of them using a ladies hat for Indy. Maybe that's why Ford said, "Now THAT'S a @#$% hat," when he saw the Adventurebilt. For the first time they gave him a man's hat!

Seriously, though, I like the color of the felt. Any way to see a top view? The dome looks a little pointy, too.

It's conceivable that HJ might use the block used to make this hat for a mans hat, but women's hats, I assume, had they're own set of blocks which, however similar, would never have been used for a man's hat. I'm no hatter, so that is all conjecture. But, that is a nice block. If HJ had something like this in their shop, it is possible it could have been used for the Raiders hat. But I'm not a 360 guy. Doesn't look right to me, though it makes a mean looking hat.

This is a very interesting find, 3K$. Those hats with the ribbon the back were usually used by women for dressage riding. I love this hat, especially that big thick ribbon there. Very classy.

Yeah, the bow on the back deal. Anyone want me to do this to their hats on order? The up side is......NO ONE WOULD CALL YA INDIANA! But their remark might perhaps be worse! Fedora

I've seen more than my share of old 1930's films with men having the bow on the back of the hat, so it wasn't uncommon 'in the day'.

Check out some of the old 1937-38 'The Shadow' films starring Rod La Rocque sometime if you get a chance. You'll see a LOT of those hats in those films.

I have seen one hat on a man with the bow in back in an old film. I thought he was just borrowing his wife's hat! Fedora

That's actually a nice woman's hat! It's definitely something you don't see too often on ladies today, old style ladies hats... I hope your sister will enjoy it.

For some reason though, I can't help but think it reminds me of the Young Indiana Jones fedora on the left of this picture from another thread:

I saw this "Sabra Hummus"comercial tonight, I've seen it a bunch of times, and liked the hat. So I just looked it up on youtube and realized it could nearly be a clone of the HJ. Probably vintage, velour finish, about the same ribbon width and just now noticed, there is a bow at the back of the hat! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dydOm225374 - Bink, still working on that top view for you.

Seems to me that the hat had a center crease in it and was distorting the look. But, you are right. That may very well be the same hat. Very similar. If that's the case, that dude is wearing a womans hat and doesn't know it. Thought these hats were usally dressage womens hats, I've seen a few mens hats with the back bow deal and I can't get into it. Just looks too weird to me. I'd rather not have a bow, if that were the case. I've seen some hats that don't have a bow, just a "knot" over the ribbon. Very good eye, there $3k.

I've seen the plain 'knot" too, and thought this hat might have that, but there was one frame where it does look like a bow to me. (There's also a guy in the background with a black fedora with a 1 inch brim.) "..mug? .... .. What mug?"

And I have to wonder if the hat on the left is an HJ that just shrunk up really bad, or if it was another style of HJ that was used for some of the series. Looks to have shrunk up though, going by the way the ribbon fits the hat.

I've actually seen many vintage men's hats on ebay with the bow on the back. Not my taste at all, but I'm guessing it was not that uncommon.

Come to think of it, it is a bit dandyish or foppish for a man to wear a bow of any sort on his head, but fedoras seem to elude that somehow.

The hat was too small for my sister, so I still have it. I dug it out of storage today, and it has too much brim flange to duplicate the hat in the video. It's not really a 360 stovepipe, it has a little taper in the sides. I just assumed the sides were as straight as the front and back. So It's like a typical block/bow turned 90 degrees, but with a front to back oval. How weird is that? The oval is a short oval.

I had bought a Dobbs on ebay many years ago with the back bow/knot (couldnt tell from the pictures). I replaced the whole ribbon using a more common side bow.
