Club Obi Wan

Indy was a Boy Scout in 1912 and so I was thinking, what is the Scouts history and what items would he have carried as a Scout that we might find Indy carrying in his bags later in life? Indy holds value on very useful items and would probably continue to use them. Something like a Scout utensil kit would be such an item. Does anyone know of a list of items a Scout would be carrying in a 1912 expedition like we see in LC? Does anyone own a early manual?

Hard to say what he might have had that might have been duplicated or replaced in WWI - his binoculars, for example.

Maybe his neckerchief, used as a handkerchief/keepsake? You see it on screen, but most period books and articles only start referencing the use of the Scout neckerchief around 1915 or later, and it wasn't officially recognized by the BSA until 1923.

While it's not something Indy would have had in 1912, there is now a repro of the first official BSA pocket knife (also from 1923):

That's pretty tempting, as a former Scout and a pocket knife guy. I carry by BSA knife from 1980 every day.

Indeed ... Scouting in America is celebrating its HUNDREDTH anniversary this year!

I wonder if there's a website somewhere where aging scouts try to re-create their old uniforms in adult sizes and argue about the dating of particular bits of gear, the length of hat strings and the accuracy of reproduction merit badges?

Yeah, my son is a scout and he got a really nice 100th aniversary patch from his den leader last week. We put it up as a keep sake for him when he's older.

Any of you with boys in the Scouts, they gotta go after the original badges this year, using the original requirements: Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, Tracking.

They're only available this year, and are a real opportunity for historic and useful merit badge skills.
