Indy Pant Length - How do you judge yours?

This didn't seem like a detail I needed to chew over too much but I've just dropped my first pair of Indy pants (Wested's) at the tailors to be hemmed, he seemed like a proper old school tailor and gave me advice on altering the taper and understood the military hem. For the length at the back I put them on with my web belt and moved around until they rested in a natural position on my hips and the tailor pinned them just above the stitching above the heel of my boots.

I'm just getting the fear that they will be the wrong length. I know Indy's belt line goes up and down (way up in fights!) but you don't see Indy standing upright from the back too often to base this on.

How do you judge a good starting point for the back length on your pants ?

Might seem a very subjective question but for a first timer it's a bit scary leaving somthing in somebody elses hands to be cut up!

Cheers

If mine cover up the laces of my boots in the front, ending at the beginning of the moc-toe and leaving the entire moc-toe stitching visible, then I am happy.

I'm happy with the back of the hem resting just above the heel to allow for bunching.....much like Knibs's post. Highwater length is a no-no. Allow for bunchiness!!!!

Agreed! I personally prefer the CS length and look. Then again an Irkel (sp?) Indy look could get interesting. :-k

when i re-watched raiders the other day i noticed that the pant hem line does seem to rise somewhat during action/fight sequences . look at the raven bar fight and flying wing scenes you can see the top of his aldens, seems kinda strange when you consider the length of his pants.

My calculations were that on the front you have to have 3 eyelets visibile and the rest covered by trousers when standing. The back length is done accordingly once you have stated you want a military hem and that the front has to reach that specific mark. Tailor works out the back length.

Not too clear picture but this is the only one I've got to show you

(don't mind the tie, it's a Raiders gear)

Thanks Guys

Picking my pants up tommorow :anxious:

For reference I used a couple of pictures in the Complete Making of Indy book, the picture in tunisia where Harrisons got his shirt off and his back to the camera is the best. You can see exactly where the waistline is in relation to his hips and where the hem rests on the back of his boots. Also the picture of Harrison putting his directors chair higher than Spielbergs gives a good view from the back.

Sure you've know the ones I mean but I can post some pic's if anyone hasn't.

Cheers ZOLTAR

I haven't seen these pics. I'd appreciate if you get a chance to post them, as they'd be useful for when I get round to hemming my Raiders pants.

I'll have to take the book to work to scan them so it'll be after the Easter break now, I'll have some pics of my pants to see how I've done as well. :D

Well I've just got back to work from the taylors after picking my pants up at lunchtime, I couldn't wait untill tonite so I tried them in the shop. My Coyles haven't left my feet since they arrived so I was ready for a fitting.
I guess I was worried for nothing, the Length looks good to me and the 4" miitary hem looks neat.
I decided against messing with the cut of the legs, I'll save those alteration costs for a pair of Todd's upcoming pants!
I'll gear up tonite and get some pics taken and you can give me your 2 cents. :D

Ok here's some pics, this is the first time I've geared up so there's still a few adjustments to make (a good haircut for starters  ), I'm waiting for my holster to arrive and I've still got to decide on which Hat and Whip to go for.

How did I do with the pant length?

Let me know how I'm doing with the rest of my gar so far :TOH:

Hey Zoltar,

They look good. Maybe I missed this, but what pants are they? Did your tailor know how to do a military hem, or did you tell him? Can you show a picture of the inside of the hem so folks can see how it's done? It's a good looking ensemble. Are you going to disstress your gear, or break it in yourself?

They should be the length you'd hem a pair of dress pants, as shown in the photos.

(Noel Howard measured and fitted mine, he mentioned they should be a little on the longer side, so they cover the laces and bunch up just a little)

I think they're Wested. But, Zoltar, how the tailor did to solve the tapering problem? I have Wested pants too, really satisfied for material and color but not by the excessive tapering and I like to adjust them. ;)

Yes they are Wested's, It's just ashame the pattern and details are off because they are really well made. Mine even have tortoise shell buttons on the pockets? I didn't get the taper altered in the end as like I said plan on getting a pair of Todd's pants when they come out. I think it was Alkali Jones who pointed out in a post that the pants should taper to a certain degree, the hem diameter:shoe size ratio plays a very important part of getting the right look, hopefully I've pulled at least that part off (just by luck).

I'll take some picture's later and try as explain how the hem was done. The tailor said he'd only done a 3/4 inch front to back and unfortunatly he did the 4 inch hem stitching paralell with bottom.

As for distressing my gear I intend on wearing them as offten as possible and seeing how thing's progress before I give anything a helping hand.

Right then here a picture of how my pants were hemmed.
The hem IS turned insideout, the bottom is actually straight the curve must just have been a combination of the way it was laying and the angle of the camera. The angle of the hem actually follows through from the right hand hide giving about 3/4 of an inch difference. You can see were he unpicked the seam and restitched it to accomodate the taper in the leg. Not quite the full inch but close enough for now!

Hope this is usefull I have no nowledge of sewing so can't really explain much more.

Cheers ZOLTAR

Zoltar,what size you´re wearin´?
Size 34", the leg length is cut around 32".
They fit very snug in the waist, usually with 34" jeans I have to wear a belt or they fall down.
