Hats and Cars

I am just curious what you do with your hat when you are driving. I find my headrest gets in the way so I have to take it off and put it on the seat but what do you do with it when the car is full - hold it on your lap? I sometimes have to put it in the trunk. Any thoughts?
thanks

The head rest doesn't bother me because the brims ln my hats are pretty soft and floppy. If I need to take it off, I jusy place it on the passenger seat. If the car is full, I keep it on, or if my wife is with me, let her hang on to it.

Drive an old car, CJ! PLENTY of head room in those!
Seriously, same answer as Dave...though if my wife is with me and my head is warm enough, I toss it on the back seat. Crowded car and head warm, it goes in the trunk. If my head is cold, I wear the hat regardless.

I know we discussed this very topic fairly recently, but I can't find the thread. So... I place mine on the dashboard. I even have a small butter tub taped there to prevent the hat from sliding off. That has proven the only place that is always safe and available.

Since radar detectors are illegal here, I can't say that I do this, but if I had one with a mount on the dash I'd put the hat over it. The hat would stay in place and the detector would be out of sight of anyone who might want to take it away.

Thanks Michaelson. Got lots of headroom, just the headrest that is the issue. I have thought about lowering it but for safety reasons I like to keep it at head level. My problem with the trunk is that it is full of trunk junk and I don't want the hat to get crushed. The seat has been working but I just wondered if there was some better way.
thanks!

I can't wear my hat in my car. There is plenty of head room but I would need a chin strap or maybe a staple gun or something.

You'll have to make a new kind of hat for that baby. The "Streetracers of Cairo" with integral chin strap and flames on the ribbon.
Canada, a possible trunk solution would be to keep a hatbox in the trunk, or make one quick and dirty. Just buy a shipping box big enough and fashion a ring to tape to the bottom. Then, wedge the box in snuggly among the trunk-junk.

Thanks guys but she doesn't have a trunk, it's called a "boot" and it's not very big.

And the hood is called a "bonnet" (which is also a term for a hat with ties under the chin), necessary for driving this car...
John, is that a 1967 Lotus 7 kit?

All of my vehicles are hat friendly. These two have T-Tops just in case:
I sold the Monte Carlo SS a little while ago. But my all-time favorite is the 1998 Jeep Wrangler. About a foot of headroom there. Plus plenty of clearance to navigate through our flooded roads after the rainstorms.

Good to 'see' you Rick!
Of course, as we BOTH know, push comes to shove, we can always hang out heads out the window as we drive.

I was looking at your avatar thinking the same thing.
Funny thing is that when I get in my wife's 4Runner, I nearly break my neck as there is no headroom. I have to put the seat back enough so the hat is not rubbing on the headliner. I feel as if I am driving a luge that way.
I tried the head out the window, but it usually results in a "Daddy, my hat blew off" moment.

Every lotus 7 comes in a build it your self car. The Lotus 7 came this way to beat the 25% sales tax at the time. Someone later down the line got the idea to replicate older classic cars in kit form. The Lotus 7 started the kit cars but isn't really one.

Oh, John, just a quick side note, totally offtopic, but because I know you're watching this thread......did I mention that I hate you?
You've posted 3 absolutely BEAUTIFUL hats for sale (that 6 point is WONDERFUL) in the classified section that are exactly MY size (23"), and I'm cash poor. You are an evil evil man.

Some members use hat racks similar to this.
I did a real quick google search and found these for hard hats. Similar racks are more common for western hats, but there are a variety of options out there or you could fashion something on your own.

I have a MINI Cooper. As it happens, I crank the seat on any car I drive to its lowest point, anyway. I have lots of room for my Fed IV. And at the angle I keep the seatback, not bolt upright, but not 'luge-style,' either, the brim just brushes the head rest.

And, if you dont mind, Id like the dimensions of that brim. Ive finally begun the conversion of my (very) old Bailey western. I removed the internals, ribbon, and bow a few days ago and stuffed it in the washing machine last night for about 30 minutes - dont worry, no agitation used - and its been sitting on the block since.

Thank you! This is one of my favorite jackets and probably the cheapest new jacket I have ever purchased. You can find it
here. It's very lightweight yet well-made - and a perfect 3-season jacket.

The brim is 2 3/4 on the sides and 2 15/16 front and back. I no longer wash my hats in the washing machine, but that is a story for another thread.
Michaelson, I am slowly coming around to letting nature do it's thing on my jackets. (Birds are nature, right?)
Not to say I do not distress
some of my stuff, but let's just say with the jacket collection I have, I am learning that the resale value may be affected once you shrink, scuff and tear the jacket. Nowadays, I have to sell some stuff to buy other stuff. But most jackets still see the washing machine and an air dry if they are inordinately stiff.

Thanks for this Jeff. Do many people actually use these? Chewy - your suggestion of the hat box for the trunk is also a good one. I think I will look into that.

I found these too. I think it might be better than a behind the seat option especially if you have backseat passengers, though if low clearance is an issue I wonder how much the hat could obstruct your view while driving.
What is a Hat Lasso?
The Hat Lasso is two strands of "braided line" attached to a line hook, housed in a retractable spool. You simply pin the retractable spool to your headliner, pull out the line hook seperating the two lines, place the crown of your hat between the lines, and anchor the line hook into your headliner. In all of 10 seconds, your favorite cowboy hat is safely racked, where you want it. (Did we mention it also looks great?)

Indiana Jeff

Thing about that is, if you have a roofline high enough to hold your hat like that, why take it off in the first place?

I agree in terms of head clearance, more of an issue with the headrests I would think. Especially with super stiff cowboy hats.

Good point. I keep forgetting.
There's no headrest in the '50, and I don't notice the one in my '05 Malibu as my brims are usually soft enough to just give without moving my hat.

I just wore my hat on a 5 hour trip the whole way. On the way back I wore it for about 4 hours, and then decided to take it off and let my head breath, I just threw it in the back seat crown down and it did fine.
I guess I'm not much of a headrest guy cuz it didn't bother me at all....

The headrest on my car never bothered me and I'm driving a compact car... a Honda. The hat's back brim is soft enough that even if it hits the headrest, it just doesn't cause any inconvenience.

The high backed seats on the Jeep allow me to push back on the soft brim and hold the hat on in a good crosswind on the highway with the top off. I was thinking about clipping it to the roll bar with a tether just in case the wind does take it, but I am certain I will forget and jump out. Cannot imagine that ending well.

Ok, the old firefight/EMT just popped it's ugly head out.
I don't think any of you are using your head rest correctly. Check this out. and pleas remember I just don't want to read about how one of you have got hurt and in a small way it could have been prevented.

Absolutely love it!
Funny thing, I really don't have any trouble wearing
the lid with my convertible. My old girl is a

up and over.
It's very rare that I have trouble and I'm glad of
it, since being "a Bald Man in a bright World" makes
a hat pretty important. Only have to watch the cross winds eh.

The 7 goes 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. You can loose your glasses if your not careful. The windscreen doesn't give full protection.

That's the thing with this guy. It only weighs 1123 lbs. It's a 4 straight and The engine ways bore out to get more out of her. If I have someone sitting next to me it throws the 0-60 off.
Thanks for the kind regards towards my hats. I trying to keep the old tradition alive and well like my two buddies.
