Forcing the scrunch

Post by TenuredProfessor »

So I walked home from my local and got myself and my Henry caught in a rainstorm. I decided to put a sorta tight headband wrapped around the brim break and scrunched the hat up. I love the form it's taking and figured if it dries while scrunched up, it'll start to take that shape. Anyone else done this? I even considered a rubber band around the ribbon to force the scrunch. I don't see a downside here if ya want the roughed up look. Guess I'll find out when ol' Henry dries!!

There's been a number of members that have used rubberbands or other ways to tighten up the bow area of the hat to achieve the reverse taper or muffin topping look. Check out some hat related threads in the archives. There's some ideas there that go back to the earliest days of COW (and carry over from older Indy forum discussions). Let's see some pictures once your Henry is dry.

My bad...I just tried it and posted without checking the archives. Chalk it up to 'posting without checking the archives'....but it's scrunched and drying nicely. Man, it looks good so far!!!

Not a "bad" at all ;) Especially since you asked whether someone has done it before. Yes, some have done things that were similar (Bullitt, my fellow Dutchman being one of them) but that doesn't mean it's anywhere near common practise ;) I hope it turns out the way you want it to. And if it does, be sure to post pics of the result: I'm curious about what you will achieve with this.

I am intrigued by this idea and contemplating it on my Fed IV. Not like I got much to do being jobless.
