LOL. Yes, I have quite the little hobby / collection beginning here. Looking forward to having a go with this new whip too.

I started with one of Gus' 8-footer whips back in the spring of 2008; a great whip to learn on BTW. Thanks Gus, I had a great time with that whip.

Then in November that year I took delivery of one of Bernie's kangaroo 10-footers (#2261); very stout and heavy whip, quite fun for wraps. Thanks Bernie.

Now I'm going for another 8-footer in natural with a saddle tan transition knot. Graeme's admission that he learned by watching Bernie's tutorial sealed the deal.

The sale prices didn't hurt either.

Hi Mountaineer, I've seen your whip on Bernie's sight. Looks great. Bernie is truly a master whip maker and his DVDs on whip making are awesome and I would recommend them to anyone who wants to start making whips. There is just something so much better watching a whip made than reading about it in a book IMO. I would love to see a pic of your whips now they have aged a bit ;)

I think I can oblige you there.

Please bear in mind that Gus' whip started out very pale, almost white. Bernie's was not as pale, but I do remember it being lighter than it is currently.
I've used Bear Grease exclusively on both these whips and my other leather gear; both Indy and non-Indy related. Great stuff for covering scratches and making it look new with every application.

Hi Mountaineer,
Thanks for the link :TOH: Those whips look great :whip: Thank you for those detailed pics :) I like seeing pics of aged, used whips. I can tell you have had a lot of fun with them both. Its great to see how different whip makers interpretations of the Indy whips differ, but still look like Indy whips. It will be nice to see your new whip in the same shots when you get it ;) I love the metal in the butt knot on the Bernie whip, nice touch.
Thanks again
Graeme :whip:

Yes they have been great fun.

I'll be sure and do some shots when I get the new one.

That metal cap is engraved in script with all the words you see on the photos of completed whips on Bernie's page and the date he finished it too. Talk about patience!

Well, package day once again! Just got my whip from Graeme in today. Well what can I say: It´s really an amazing piece of work. English kip is absolutely beautiful and in the hands of Mr. Roberts it becomes art. It´s hard to believe that a relative newcomer to the craft can put out work of this quality. He is definitely one to watch.

Bravo, Graeme!

Here go two shots, one with my Strain

NICE!

Lemme guess, natural whip with saddle tan knot?

If so, I'm pretty stoked to get mine that I ordered in that exact configuration...

Cool. I went back to an 8-foot length for the one I ordered.

I was so on the fence between 8 and 10 that I just went that route because it was, due to exchange rates, almost 80 USD cheaper.

Graeme, you're a master whipmaker no doubt about it, it's incredible what you can produce with kip!

Mountaineer, may i ask you just one question about the Bernie's whip please?
are there 2 or 3 bellies? Once I've read somewhere-don't remember where I maybe wrong so please, if Bernie, you're reading I apologize-that Bernie's whip are often made with more than 2 bellies, and sometimes without any bolsters?
Again I may be wrong about it. It's just that on the picture, the Bernie's whip looks very thick, comparing to Gus whip(which is also a beauty congrats Gus ;) ;) ). It's a little confusing to me, because cowhide is known to be thicker than roohide, you see what I mean?
All right, just wondering. Bernie's indy whip is beautifull too, the engraved metal on the butt knot is gorgeous. Sure it takes patience and talent!!!

Jeanfifi,

I can't speak as to what, exactly, is in my particular whip as I'm not about to take it apart. Bernie can better answer that.

However, I can say this: it is substantially thicker and heavier than Gus'. Bernie's whip weighs in at about 2 pounds as opposed to 1 pound.

Is that bad? No. It just is. They both work as whips. Going from the lighter weight to the heavier just took a little getting used to.

Bernie's whip is a heavy-duty whip, cracks easily and sounds like a gunshot. Gus's whip works well too; it's just lighter in weight.

Back to the original question, Does my kangaroo whip have multiple layers? Yes. Bernie has that much posted on his website.

Thanks for the great comment my friend :TOH:
I can't speak for Bernie but I think he now makes his whips with 4 plaited bellies instead of 2 bolsters and 2 plaited bellies because he says it makes for a better whip. Bernie tries to aim for a 25mm thick whip, to do this he used to add a thick cow hide bolster for the final bolster to bring up to width. You could also take into account that Gus's whip could be narrow? Either way they both look like great whips.

Graeme :whip:

No worries, JP.

Sometimes there can be too much information to sort out and/or remember.

Better to ask and get a link than never figure it out. Or spend all day looking for it.

Been there, done that...

I got a bit of good news while at work this morning and I'm just now able to post these.

Graeme sent me an email stating my whip was done and would be shipped out tomorrow.

Awesome start to a Monday. I ordered an 8-foot, 12 plait in natural with a transition knot in saddle tan.

Well, here goes a pic and a short video. Sorry for the poor quality and my shamefull whip cracking performance  . I´ve never really made a whip video before, so I kinda just winged it. I even did a sort of "backhand towel snap" move that at least gets a crack, but looks silly. I gotta get more practice at combining different cracks. I´m really not this bad, honestly
