Thanks for sharing. That was really neat.
Effective? Yes. Realistic? No. It's like a nunchaku. Who really carries them around when they are actually needed? It's great for the art but not reality based.

And once again I counter with, oddly enough, I do. Same for guns and knives. If you don't have it on you, what good does it do you?

None. But a knife and gun are far easier to conceal. You can't easily conceal a whip of that sort.
Not looking to argue with you, but that whip has very little use in a real confrontation. Somebody would just plow right through that weapon especially if extremely dangerous. It takes the guy far to long to attack again. If the person wanted to seriously harm you or kill you, you better have something that isn't going to take many hits to stop them. Yes, he has good aim and it tears paper. But it's not tearing flesh or bones and I'm not sure if it could anyway. If it were a really short bullwhip? Maybe. I would find it easier to conceal than that whip but then again, it's debatable.
Just my .02 cents from my studies in martial arts and self defense. I'd rather carry this discussion further in private.

For close quarter battles, a credit card (laminated ID, driver's license, etc...) will do some damage to an attacker if you know how to use it... and it is easier to conceal. I think a few Filipino martial artists teach this technique (Sari-an: pronounced Sa-ree-ahn) to women. They have you use everyday objects as weapons in case you are attacked... you can use whatever you have handy (a bag, keys, credit card) against the attacker to bring him down and run like ####!

The late Grand Master Snookie Sanchez doing a bullwhip demonstration in Hawaii a couple years before he passed away. THIS is some of the stuff Tom Meadows is referring to in his book on the bullwhip in Filipino Martial Arts!
Cool stuff!

Amazing!
Now, the whip Snookie Sanchez used in that last video is more in line with what I knew as "eskrima whip". The other one looks more like a buggy whip to me.
Thanks for sharing Hollywood/thefish.
