Custom Indy Bag to Hold Laptop

Hey everybody, I'm Nic and I'm new here. I have a question for you guys.

A few years ago I order an Indy Bag from WhatPriceGlory and I really dig it. Now, however I'd like one in the same style but wide enough to hold a 15" MacBook Pro laptop. I emailed WhatPriceGlory and they said they can't do custom orders. Any other thoughts?

####! Read my mind-- I've been asking around for this very thing. I need one for a 13inch MacBook.

Think we might be able to interest Todd or Magnoli or someone? I love my Todd's bag and would definitely buy one sized for a laptop.

Israeli paratrooper bag. a quick google will show sellers. they're under $20. the logo can come off with a hot iron (my exgirlfriend used a certain fabric to pull it off with, but i don't know what it was...a craft store probably would).

It's not dead-on Indy, more Indy-esque

Man this idea has been beat to death! I'll state here just as I've stated in every other thread where someone has had this idea, "I REALLY hope this pans out." I have wanted a Indy styled laptop bag for some time, and this idea is like a bad penny, it keeps turning up ;) . However, every time someone says they are going to attempt a run...nothing comes out of it  . Here's hoping for this one! [-o<

I see other people offering suggestions on other style or brand of bags, but that isn't what I came here for. I want an authentic Indy bag replica, just a big wider and deeper. I hope this pans out too!

Don't dispair VP, apparently someone has managed to run an emulated Windoze 7 on the SDK.

Yeah, its been discussed. And please don't take my comments negatively towards you! I have just wanted this to happen for a while, and every time it looks like it is \:D/ it doesn't  .Like you said, the last time it came up the best we got was a suitable ready-made bag and attatching one of Wades super awesome straps. While that is a good idea, thats not what I'm looking for.

I was looking at British hunting bags and the first one had a a real CS vibe to it…. but don't get that one, the materials are horrible!

But the whole hunting thing might be somewhere you can look.

I have the Israeli Paratrooper bag. I use it all the time. I don't normally put my computer in it, though I have, but it's just a great overall bookbag/binderbag. I teach high school. My students have gotten used to seeing me carry this bag, with an Indy strap over my shoulder, and one of my two Nowaks as well.

Yep, I put an Indy strap (todds) on mine as well. I really like the bag and do sometimes throw my laptop in there.

But I also understand the desire for some to have a more Indy looking bag...which is what I don't know...a smaller flap?

My advice for those folks:

1) go to Home Depot or similar store.
2) purchase a canvas dropcloth (in the paint section).
3) purchase some fabric dye at a craft store.
4) cut your pattern, dye the pieces, and stitch it together, following your "real" indy bag as a template.
5) Tandy leather will have the snaps and stuff needed to finish.

it might be easier to do for yourself rather than wait for someone else to do it for you.

I am not an expert on anything but I have been lurking around here for a while. That being said, there have been posts in the past that include schematics and patterns for the MkVII bag. Here is one of them but there are more.

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32243&hilit=mk+vii+pattern

In short, if you want something and no one else makes it, make it yourself. If there are others interested, you have an instant cottage industry. Find a niche and fill it. That's the name of the game. Go for it Yek!

I agree with VP's Picard photo.

It'd be neat to see some MkVII clones in more "useful" shapes, sizes, and features. Knibs, I hope your collaborative effort with Wade comes up with something fantastic for all of us!

I found a messenger bag online that's certainly big enough for a laptop. It's not an Indy bag, but it is definitely something that he might use.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002C ... ss_product
I bought this a month ago, and it's become my best buddy around campus. Big enough for my 13 inch lappy, a textbook, and a binder, among some other things. Certainly big enough for a 15 inch lappy. Apparently, this is the Jack Bauer bag, so it'll please any 24 fans out there.

and that's just the point...

no laptop bag will be an "Indy" bag...because the "Indy" bag can't hold a laptop...and such a bag could never be screen acccurate...it will always just be a "close-enough" that can hold a laptop...

and that being the case...any close enough that can hold the laptop should suffice, because it has the "spirit" of Indy

a 2010 mustang will never be a 1965...but they're both still mustangs, different body's, similiar spirit.

Eh, no, I think that misses the point.

Screen accurate or not, there can be a bag that looks identical in all ways to an MKVII save for in dimension. And that's what we're looking for. There are degrees of screen accuracy. And a bag with all the details of an MKVII that is just a bit longer is definitely more accurate than a bag that looks nothing like an MKVII.

RaidersBash wrote:still not an "Indy Bag"

And why not? I think it is every bit an Indy bag. Can you really tell that it's exactly 10inches long from watching it on screen? Would a 13inch bag be so utterly jarring and different? Of course not.

A bag with the details of an MKVII is an Indy bag in my eyes-- it looks exactly like an Indy bag, it functions like an Indybag-- it's compartmentalized like an Indy bag-- it's an Indy bag. Its design and function are what make it an Indy bag. You don't say one Indy jacket isn't an Indy jacket because it's cut larger around the chest to accommodate a huskier size? Or because the sleeve seam aligns directly with the yoke seam? It's still an Indy jacket even with those differences. Same thing flies here.

Some other bag with a large cover flap and buckles on the front isn't an Indy bag-- it isn't even remotely an Indy bag. It's just an olive drab bag.

What kind of bag are these? They kind of have the shape and it would take much to add the accessories.

Thanks to everyone on their suggestions on an alternative bag, however, as the OP I specifically want a Mark VII bag that is slightly longer and deeper.

Now as far as if that is an authentic Indy Bag or not is completely besides the point. I posted a question and was looking for a potential answer: Does anybody know where I can get a different sized Indy Bag around here? Considering a few different people make these reproduction bags, I didn't think it would be hard to tweak the design slightly accommodate my request.

I'm glad BaptisteTheFool thinks the same way I do about this. He summed it up perfectly.

Seems like I'm not the only person here interested in this either. Anyhow, thanks again for everybody's suggestions and hopefully we can make this a reality before too long.

Lots of reproductions which are made in mass quantities, most likely overseas. Your best bet is to have one custom made by a local seamstress or the like. That will probably be your best and most cost effective route. You could probably even take them a MK 7 and ask them to increase the size. You can get snaps and hardware from a fabric supply store or online.

Good luck!

It is indeed the Jack Bauer bag from season 4 or 5, I forget now. I've had that same bag for about 4 years now and I love it. Very tough and durable. And very simple, which to me, adds a certain Indy quality to it.
It's a great bag. Enjoy it.

I don't want you guys to get your hopes up too far, but I have designed a MKVII laptop version and am just waiting to have the right factory make it up for me. I have received some samples and they get better and more accurate each time. So hopefully I'll be able to offer these at some point.

FYI, though it is exciting for Indy fans, I am mainly working on this bag to sell to the stores which I supply with woman's belts and accessories for use as a purse or laptop bag. But with the right strap it will be an Indy inspired laptop satchel.

Things like this always take a lot more time and energy than initially expected. But rest assured I have been working on it an am getting closer all the time.

Yes, the iPad with a cover on it does fit nicely in a MK VII, with room to spare for other gear. Sort of like carrying a Mead notebook in the rear compartment, just a tad heavier.

Cheers!
