New Todd's standard jacket just arrived and looks awesome!

I'll get the pics posted as soon as my wife wakes up from her nap.
The reason I am posting this is to say that according to the sizing chart on Todd's website there should be no way that this jacket should fit me... but it fits amazingly.
These are my measurements:
Height: 65" (5'5")
Weight: 168 lbs
Sleeve: 32"
Chest: 43"
Waist: 32"
Coyle's Indiana Jones Jackets
Sleeve Chest Waist
S 33 1/2" up to37" up to 34"
M A 33" up to 40" up to 38"
M B 34 1/2" up to41" up to 38"
L 35 1/2" up to 45" up to 42"
XL 36 1/2" up to 49" up to 46"
XXL A 36" up to 48" up to 44"
XXL B 37 1/2" up to 53" up to 48"
If I were to follow the standard sizing chart shown above I would have to get a large just to fit my chest but it would be too long for the rest of my body. As it is I happened to have ordered a medium A, which by all accounts should not fit me. The sleeves should be too long, the chest should be much too tight, and the waist should be too small. This seems especially true given the fact that so many people on this site say that Todd's standard jackets fit tight for their size. However as I said before mine fits wonderfully. Before I joined the Army I managed a tuxedo shop for several years, and am very familiar with the proper way to take measurements for men's clothing, so you can be certain that I am not measuring myself incorrectly. The point I'm trying to make with all this is that measurements for jackets are more of guidelines than rules. Generally speaking, your measurements will get you started in the right area to finding a proper fit, but fit not only depends on your measurements, but other factors which include the shape of your body and also the proportions of your various parts. So don't be too afraid to order a jacket off the rack simply because the sizing chart doesn't necessarily put you in a certain size. You may get the wrong size and have to do an exchange, but you may also find that you, like me and many others wear a size other than what your measurements indicate.

Congrats on your new Standard;you may not wish to take this step as your jacket fits so well, but many recommend breaking it in with a good soaking:

Thanks guys! I can't tell you how pleased I am with this jacket, but having it only makes me want to get another one to see the difference in them. I think my next jacket will be either a wested or a US wings. Looks like I'll be needing a second job

Probably two or three. Once you get the jacket itch, even Gold Bond Medicated Powder isn't getting rid of it.

I've read that these jackets are super-thin and don't feel like a 'real' jacket at all - mind you, just what I have read from other reviews of this product.
I would like to see a youtube video of Todd's standard jacket so I can get a better idea of how it moves. Any volunteers?

It's a great jacket Frosty. It's more like a very nice windbreaker, kinda what you'd need if running through a jungle or on a desert night dig, but still tough and thick enough to offer a relative level of protection from things like tarantulas on your back (or maybe black widows) and other creepy crawlers...but its also provides the ability to wear a sweater underneath (ala MOTB) in case you get caught in something cold...where a windbreaker is still a necessity.

Just watch Mythbusters - Adam wears one in recent eps. Looks no different to the film jacket in terms of thickness.

I'm just concerned that if I get one of Todd's standard jackets, I will think it's too flimsy/thin.
I have a jacket now that is a 'stand-in' until I can get the funds together to get a proper Indy jacket. I am going to Orlando in March and would like to have an Indy jacket to wear down there but may only be able to afford Todd's by that point.
My other option is the Wested ROTLA washed goat.

I had a wested goat for several years, that i just sold on the bay after getting my Todd's Standard. Never liking the fit of the goat, the thickness, the way it moved, that it was too warm to wear most times, but not warm enough in winter and too tight to wear a sweater with...
the day I put on my Todd's, I knew I would never wear that goat ever again.

Got pictures? Here's my 'stand-in' jacket until I get a proper Indy jacket. I just don't want to get used to the thickness of the one I am wearing here and then get one of Todd's and think it's like a windbreaker...
As you will see, I am in desperate need of a real Indy jacket

Is that an insinuation on how thin Todd's jacket is? I'm torn between the Wested and Todd's. This might be a tougher decision than when I was thinking about which fedora to go with!

Holt has a Todds, and I think he spoke highly of it. I'd say Holt is one of (if not THE) resident expert on the jacket. I know he has a thread about his Todd's somewhere...
maybe holt can find his because it's a good one with some great photos.
here's mine...need new pics, especially since the hat looks WAAAAAAAY better now...almost a perfect LC look going on now, with more brim curl and slightly deeper bashes

Your input has been helpful gentlemen, thank you.
What's it like weathering a Todd's standard? With it being thinner and lighter than other offerings, is there a need to be extra careful with adding 'character' to it?

Not difficult, but probably unnecessary. From what I've seen I personally like the ones that have broken in naturally look. Mine sure went to fitting better faster without a doubt, and getting caught in the rain will probably happen sooner or later anyway, but i think in the thread i posted another gent (SteerPike) posted his that he's letting age naturally, and IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD!!! IMO
but then again, Holt's looks good in his thread...don't know if he wet his, but from what I hear he wets everything (don't take that the wrong way holt
also, i don't want to leave you with the impression that the jacket is like a "nylon" windbreaker. It's still a REAL LEATHER Jacket...
That's it: JACKET is the word. It's just not a coat, like the thicker A2's that everyone is familiar with and that's probably what someone might be expecting...

even though it is thin, doesnt mean it will tear on you on every branch it meets. but it will NOT survive truck draging. if you plan on being dragged by a truck to work, then do it marty mcfly style
I wouldnt want to fake age my todds because it is lambskin and a thinner grade then what I have felt. but not papertissue. it IS a jacket but it ISNT an Eastman either. you will understand what I mean when you get it. I highly recommend a todds as I highly recommend a wested or a Magnoli.
fake ageing I dont like. showering the jacket? I like

I like the Back to the Future reference!
No - no hardcore adventuring or truck dragging for me. I might only wear it when I'm in the rest of my gear - which will not be as often as my regular coats/jackets.
I have an X-men 2 Cyclops style jacket I wear for inbetween seasons that is pretty light. I bet Todd's is a lot like that.

The leather is very thin, but like everyone is saying it not intended to be dragged behind a truck. Unless you are working in the Indy stunt show at Disney world it should be fine.
some activities I would NOT recommend you wearing this jacket to are:
-Trimming rose bushes
-Bathing cats
-Laying down/picking up concertina wire
-picking cotton
Other than these (and similar) activities your jacket should be fine for a moderate amount of wear.

It might not be screen accurate Frosty, but that near-enough jacket of yours is pretty cool!
I like the fit; it's baggy enough, especially the sleeves, without looking several sizes too big. Whatever Indy jacket you get, look for that sort of fit.
Maybe an inch or two shorter though.

GF, people will try to tell you it's a costume jacket. It's not, and I for one am sick to death of hearing that it is.
I have tortured mine with shower soakings and sandpaper. Believe me, it's weathered it all. So far the only regret I have is that I recently conditioned my jacket with leather dressing. It brought the jacket darn near back to brand new!
Anyway, pull back and remind yourself that it IS, after all, just a jacket. A jacket of high-end screen accuracy that's relatively cheap. Don't like it? Return it, sell it, whatevs.

I agree with this, however I'm still gonna buy a Wested when I get the chance. I like the idea of having the same look with options for different types of weather. Todd's is great for the summer, spring and early fall, but not great for cold winters.

I bought that at JC Penny a few years ago for $70. Wore it once or twice, then it kinda got pushed back in my closet with the rest of the stuff I don't wear much. It's a size small but fits more like a medium. You're right about the sleeves, too long which is one of the things I did not like about it. I will have to sell it on Ebay so I don't get used to wearing it with my gear. If I pick up one of Todd's jackets I don't want to be spoiled by wearing a thicker jacket.

Actually Frosty, i think the sleeve length on your near-enough is just right. Just the body could stand to be an inch or so shorter. As far as the Todd's standard goes, i purchased one in early 2008, and found the leather to be awfully thin, if it could be called leather at all. Sure it was light, but a jacket made of paper would be light too.. A lot of people disagreed, but in my opinion, the Todd's standard is a costume piece, nothing more, and i couldnt see myself wearing it in public!

i wear mine every day (nearly). I've also worn it in the snow, in the rain, with a sweater and scarf, and with just a t-shirt or button down. I've worn it to the beach, I've been camping many many times in it, and hunting a few times.
Personal taste and preference is one thing, but comparing it to a piece of paper is just wrong, completely inaccurate and it's really unfair to bad mouth one of our reputable vendors item like that, when SOOOOOOOOOO many people don't agree with such a sentiment.

When I got my Todd's Std. I commented on how light it is, but I think that's more a function of lambskin generally. It's a thin, lightweight leather no matter what you do with it.

Especially when the leather toughens up exponentially after a single shower soaking... and stays that way.

Does wearing it in the shower cause the jacket to shrink? If so how much. I would like to break mine in in the shower however I don't want to ruin the fit of the jacket. Right now it fits perfectly.

i wouldnt wanna do it. you could give the jacket a light shower in very hot water, but not soak it. the leather is thin and therefore prone to shrinking. just shower it to the point it is damp and then wear it.

Yeah...i over did mine a tad. It doesn't take much to get the leather soaked through and through, and unless you have a very low flow shower head, it's kinda hard to control.
I bought my jacket oversized on purpose so i could fit a sweater or 2 under it...which is what i did when I got out of the shower. I put on 2 thick sweaters and wore it for a day until it dried (just to make sure it didn't overshrink).
Maybe a hot "sponge-bath" would be easier to control the moisture level...?
My shower treatment definitely shrunk and tightened the leather though, giving it a much stronger and tougher feel,
but i think if i had it to do over again...i might think twice and just let it break in naturally. A water based leather conditioner like "CPR", or even some hand lotion would tighten the leather without shrinking too much, or stretching the liner (another drawback of "soaking").
food for thought...

I think I would just want to get rid of the shine. I would also want to take it to a tailor to get fitted better, but then what if I get caught in rain and it shrinks on me? I would probobly want to pre-shrink it a little before I decide on any altering.

you worrie to much. just wear it. it will shrink alittle to your bodyshape. why bother taking it to a tailor?.... they probably take a 100 to 150 dollars to adjust it. is it worth it?

Yeah, I do worry too much - but that's because I care enough about getting SA gear that looks good. IMO, it's the guys that don't worry enough that end up settling for less-than-perfect gear.
This isn't some passing intereste for me - I love Indy and I want to get it right the first time.

but of course, do as you like. I just dont get it. why pay for a tailor to do the job on a of the rack jacket when you actually can save that money and spend it on a custom made jacket instead?

I don't know what tailors charge you, but at my local dry cleaners, they have taken in a jacket for me and it only costed me $20. I'm just saying if the sleeves end up being a tad long or if the fit is too big in some areas, just have it taken in a little.
But the good news is, I almost always fit into off the rack items without problems - my body shape is pretty average so I'm hoping I won't have any problems.

I appreciate your input. When I started here, I wanted to get the best info from the most informed members. At this point, regarding the jacket and how it will fit me, it's all speculation so I really won't know until I get it.
I will certainly post pics of me wearing it 'out of the box' before I go ahead and do any modifications to it.

Good gear videos really help to illustrate the quality and look of gear and are a perfect companion to well done photographs.
