Hi all, I did a search of the boards but came up empty on this one. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make leather dressing at home? I recently acquired a brick of beeswax for something else, and thought it would be an interesting challenge. Anyone ever done this?

A long time ago ... like around 15 years ago, David Morgan gave me a recipe.

80% kidney fat/beef suet. (get it ground from your grocer)
10% lanolin (from your drugstore)
10% bees wax.

Put them in a pot on the stove an heat until they melt. Careful not to burn.
When they have melted mix them and pour the mix into a container for keeping.

This will harden. When needed, you can set it out to soften a bit.

Now the story behind this mix.
I had made a batch and left it in a little aluminum foil type container. You know the kind. For small breads or cakes.
My sister-in-law came over one afternoon and saw it in the fridge.
When she asked what it was, I replied, "White chocolate. Have some". (It looks just like white chocolate).
She got a small knife and cut a piece off.
Just as she went to take a bite I yelled "Stop"! But it was too late.
Beef suet, lanolin, and bees wax in the mouth and up into the teeth.
I felt really bad, but I don't recall laughing as hard either.
Man was she ticked. But isn't that what sister-in-laws are for.

Have fun.
Chris

With that mix, be very careful where you store your leather items treated with this blend. With all those 'meat' products as its main base, it will be come a bug magnet!

One good thing, though. Should you ever find yourself stranded for days with no food, all you have to do is boil a pot of water, toss in your treated jacket, and you'd have a pretty good soup stock! :-k

;)

Even though I probably won't use the meat-based dressing, the story was excellent :D
