New Todd's Standard All Good!

This is in response to a rather negative post that was going around.

So, here's an homage to my new Todd's Standard.

This is THE jacket I've wanted for years. For $150 I couldn't be more happy. I've had my Wested Goat for about 10 years, and although I always wanted a REAL indy jacket, I was never happy with the fit. I always hoped it would break in like all those leather jackets I had before that I just loved and wore until they were destroyed, but it never did.

So here's my Todd's and what I carry with it. Lighter in the left, knife in the right. The Zippo has been converted to a ZipLight LED flashlight. Has proven handier than an actual lighter.

If there was a member's gear section, I would update there, but I guess I'll have to do it here as new pics enter the photoalbum.

This is a perfect 4 season "jacket" (not a coat). It serves as a great windbreaker on cool summer nights, and I can wear a couple thick articles under it. A cardigan and scarf not being an issue at all...

The jacket at first was stiff and fit a little odd. I took a shower with it, threw on a thick sweater and wore it until it dried, put on a couple treatments of conditioner (LeatherCPR) and it's perfect now.

It has that great Raiders hang, with the long vertical wrinkles that comes from a light leather like lambskin... :)

And great wrinkles in the back. The shower treatment really broke it in quick.

Heh... Is this topic not kinda an attack as well?

I gave Todd a chance to defend himself. I created the other topic (and I was very explicitly clear from the get-go on this) not to attack but for input and informed analysis on a jacket that I (in my uninformed innocence) deemed inadequate.

So yeah-- I kind of don't appreciate the implication that I "slammed" somebody or that I created a topic for no other purpose but to be negative.

Is that the lining I can see poking out under the bottom of the jacket in the back shot?

Yeah. And it wasn't clear in any of my photos but lining crept out of the sleeves and at the bottom of mine as well. Though I thought that was a minor complaint compared to the other issues I had with the jacket.

It is. The lamb shrank some after the water treatment which I think is to be expected...it's an easy thing to fix. But really, having too much material now is a nice problem to have. I had a problem with another Indy jacket that didn't have enough in the back panel and always bound up when i moved. haven't ran into any binding problems with this one.

Good looking jacket. As you say it captures the Raiders look nicely - which to me is the key to any Indy jacket :TOH:

I am completely agree with you about this. My Todd seem to me absolutely Raiders style, and I like to wear it in winter too (in my country is not actually so cold this year)..

I preferred not to distress it, and let age itself just wearing and adventuring :whip:

Ahh...I bet Indy carried these items in his Mk VII. :P

Seriously, I think that the Todd's Std. jacket captures the spirit of Raiders quite well, a costume piece that also could be used in warmer climates, as you guys have demonstrated. These jackets have been modified by vendors to make them more durable, or heavier, but there is a viable place in the market for a thin leather jacket that maybe does not look so thin on camera.

RB, what style of jacket did you receive, the older sizing scheme or the new? It appears as though the new styled jacket has been tweaked to include a larger collar (referencing the jacket in the other thread) and hand warmers that go into the lining?

WOW!!! Your jacket looks great!

A part of me wishes I would have gone the natural route. It probably wouldn't have taken that long to get it to break in and form to me, but I figured I would get caught in the rain with it sooner or later, so might as well speed up the whole process. But I did loose some of the "sheen" that yours has.

Once again, Great Looking Jacket :TOH:

Well, we know for sure that the lighter is carried in the "left jacket pocket", but you're right and he does reach to his bag in raiders to retrieve his knife...but minus the bag, the boyscout in him would still be carrying his all purpose tool (knife) on him, and where better than the right side pocket...?

Anyway, back to topic :)

My jacket is one of the newer ones, so the pockets do go into the lining. I'm not sure about the collars, beyond being stiff when brand new, and because of how they're packed and folded into the plastic bag the collar stands up kinda tall when brand new. I don't think my collar looks abnormal now, but when it was new it was kinda tall with an Elvis feel to it. A little steam and it relaxed just fine.

Thanks for asking :TOH:

I've ruined a few things...sometimes these guys around here are so talented and show a thread of how they did something making it look so easy...and it's not, they're just good...

or they've ruined their fair share of gear in the learning process

Humm... :-k I have worn my Todd's standard all winter. I just throw on a sweater underneath and I am very warm. It was 17F here today, but I have worn it on colder days too!
It's a great jacket!

Wulfgang, do you have any winter pics of yours?

I wear mine the same in cold weather. Like I've always said, the real Indy jacket was never meant to be anything more than a windbreaker...something to protect from spiders and mosquitos when hiking through south american (or big spiders in a temple), or to throw on in the cool evening of an egyptian dig.

If it was thicker, he would not have been able to run a 440 yard dash without passing out.

A couple layers underneath with a sweater and a scarf and the jacket still rocks. I live in the mountains and have been out in temps in the teens and was tickled on the inside because it's what I always wanted out of my Indy Jacket. :D

Would that be too embarrassing? I mean, I have some pieces but I don't think I want to show them...and some I've actually managed to recover with some work...

but let's just say working with plaster of paris isn't as easy as the pictures make it look...getting it into an idol can be even tougher...doh!

Ah, balls!

From the looks of it the updated Todd's jacket no longer has the correct arm seam/yoke seam placement. What's with that? I have one of his earlier jackets and it's completely correct (arm seam 1inch below yoke). Why has it suddenly now changed?

To all Todd's customers,

I ordered my first jacket on Friday and asked for it to be shipped USPS. Does he contact you about when its shipped, tracking #, etc. I received an email that he got payment, but nothing else. I also sent him an email based on recommendations from this post to see if he could put a steam on the jacket before shipping.

MC,

Any orders/shipping I've had from him in the past have been sent via UPS which did include tracking information for me to follow the delivery's progress across the country.
Going out on a limb I'm willing to wager that sometime Monday you'll get something similar from Todd on your USPS delivery.

If not, I'd be surprised.

Received mine in the mail today. Other than the sleeves (little long), the jacket fits great. My arms are around 35" so I always have a little difficulty. I would rather have them slightly longer than to short. To remedy it, I just rolled them inside to the wrist. The great thing with this jacket is that they hold there place when you take it off. The collar is a little "squared off", but any new leather jacket will react the same way. Overall, very satisfied :D . It was great doing business with Todd as well :TOH: . I guess I could steam the collar, but I think casual wear will more than likely solve the problem.

Yeah. the collar will relax with regular wear.

Also, you will loose about an inch in the "elbow gathering (?)", or the series of wrinkles that occur around the elbows. something to think about before a permanent crease occurs at your cuff.

but I agree with you, better too long than too short. Too long you look right when riding on a motorcycle (ala LC), but kinda dumb when you put your arms out straight and the cuff ends up at your forearm

Great looking jacket

I love my Todd's as well (I have one of the older ones) and it really is a great jacket anf fits me like a dream

after a year or two of everday wear its finally starting to look like indys jacket should look worn in and beaten up

not a heavy jacket by any means but it gets worn at least 7 months out of the year I'm almost never without it

during the winter ( its usually a tough choice in winter between either my indy jacket or my labby shot Blade Runner trench Indy usually wins though since its a great all purpose leather jacket :D )

so yeah the Todds standard rules

Nice review. :TOH:

Do you have any pics of it? If it's the older style, with the non-aligned sleeve/yoke seam I'd love to see that! It's really the variations between jackets that makes the hobby so much fun. If they were all identical, it'd get pretty boring IMO

Looks good, very Raiders "idol-grab"-ish! And also, in a way, reminds me of Fedora in LC. Not that that's a bad thing.

To the experts on Indy's jacket - how SA is Todd's standard?
It looks like the one in the movie - so how thin the leather is not a concern to me.
If there are modifications to be made to it in order to make it more SA, do we have any members here who do that kind of work on a Todd's?

I dont think Todd does detail mods on the jacket. what you see is what you get and you get an highly detailed raiders jacket.

Like Holt said (and I would think most agree that HE IS the expert), the standard is about as SA as they come...

now if you want to go film accurate and rip out the liner and things like that, well....i'm sure a person is on their own in that area :TOH:

So when people spend big bucks from other makers, they are really just paying for luxury details like different leather? To me, SA comes first - as long as its not falling apart.
I'm glad these jackets are getting good reviews - when I first became a member here I was focusing on the negative comments about them, but in that time have become informed enough to form my own opinion - and I have to say that it comes from all those great photos...and of course, Holt's blessing!

That would only be a small part of what you would be paying for.
Todd's standard jacket however is arguably the most SA in the lower price arena.
