Indiana's hat care

Hallo guys, I like to share this with you, first time I read about Indy's talking about the care of his hat, is from Bantam's book 'The Philosopher's Stone', page 189:
Leonardo Sarducci - I discovered that your head was doing something more than holding up that awful-looking hat.
Indy - I like my hat. Shure, it's a little beat-up, but when it's blocked it will be as good as new.
LS - The eternal optimist.
Cool!
Maybe it's true Indy had the same hat for many many years!

Ah, yes. I know this part very well as I have read the McCoy books loads of times.
I like the quote as well.
I believe though, that if we opened up Indy's closet we would see a row of hats on a shelf, with a dozen leather jackets, pairs of pants and shirts hung up.

I love the Bantam books. I just finished the Legacy of the Unicorn and am currently reading the interior world. Thanks for the post.

We can't carry away a whole lot from that set of quotes.
A LOT of us have 'awful looking' hats in our collections that would look good as new after a reblock that may only be a couple years old. Nothing says it was his 'one and only' hat he had worn and owned all his life.
It just said he had an awful looking beat up hat that needed a reblock, and the other fellow felt it was beyond help.

I remeber another quote like that being posted here on COW. it was about Mac and Indy talking about his hat, in which Indy stated he reblocked it a thousand times or so, and that there are hatters who can fix an hole in the felt, even if it costs you an arm or a leg - something like this.
I did a search, and did not come to any findings...

thank you!
I'll quote Arch here
Arch Stanton wrote:"Hello? Have a look." Mac pointed.
At first, Indy wasn't sure what he was seeing, but
then he was.
"My hat!"
He managed to get to his feet, and to the hat. He
picked it up, shook the sand off it, and put it on.
He suddenly felt better. Things could be worse. Yeah,
they had crashed into the sea, but they were alive, he
had his whip, his revolver, and his hat. That was a
good sign. Nothing was broken. The day was definitely
looking up.
Mac said, "I've been meaning to ask you-how have
you managed to keep that blasted hat in one piece?
You've had it as long as I've known you."
Indy grinned. "I've had it longer than that."
Mac raised an eyebrow.
"I was...thirteen? Almost fourteen. It involved the
Cross of Coronado."
"I've heard of that. Gold, preciuos stones, suppose-
edly had a sliver of Christ's cross tucked away in it?"
Indy nodded. "Yeah. If every sliver of wood that's
supposed to have come from that cross got piled up
together, it would be bigger than a giant sequoia. Any-
way, I swiped the artifact from some tomb raiders, but
Fedora outfoxed me."
"Fedora?"
"I never knew his name. This hat was his. I think he
took a shine to me after we went 'round. He gave me
some good advice, and this hat, as a consolation
prize."
"What was the advice?"
"Essentially, you can't win 'em all. Sometimes you
have to wait for another day. He was right. Eventu-
ally, I did collect Coronado's Cross and got it to the
university's museum."
"And you still have the hat."
"Yeah, I get it blocked and dry-cleaned when I'm
back in civilization, use a hat jack when it's in the
closet. Had the seatband replaced eight or nine times.
And there are hatmakers who can repair a tear or hole
in felt, though it costs an arm and a leg. For what I've
spent on this fedora over the years, I could have
bought my own haberdashery."
Mac shook his head.
"Hey, everybody has to be someplace," Indy said.
"And when I'm there, I have my lucky hat."
"Lucky?"
"I'm still breathing, aren't I?"
Mac grinned.
"what say we go and find some locals and see where
we are?" Indy said.
Please note that the sentence
If every sliver of wood that's supposed to have come from that cross got piled up together, it would be bigger than a giant sequoia.
is probably inspired by a sentence of Guglielmo da Baskerville, a character from Il Nome della Rosa, a novel by Umberto Eco:
Di frammenti della croce ne ho visti molti altri, in altre chiese. Se tutti fossero autentici, Nostro Signore non sarebbe stato suppliziato su due assi incrociate, ma su di una intera foresta.

That's really specific hat care to be inserted as "regular" dialog in an otherwise adventure story. References to reblocking and hat jacks? I imagine the typical reader is going to be an Indy fan, but as we've discussed here many times, most Indy fans aren't nearly as fanatical about the gear. Let alone specifics of fedora maintenance. I've been an Indy fan since Raiders, but terms like blocking and hat jacks were foreign to me until I joined COW. I'm surprised the editor wouldn't cross out the dialog and write a giant "huh?" in the margin of the manuscript.

Novels always have way more info than the movies theyre made into. And novels that are based on pre-existing movie characters, but not the movies they were in, can have even more info, partly because theyre not bogged down by a particular movie.

While Indiana might be our favorite hero, there's no doubt that a phaser would out shoot a revolver.

I'm not to sure about that one. Since we can see the phaser move across screen it would have to be slower than a bullet.

Agreed! Bullwhips = real damage inflicted. Phasers = CG effects.

Indy gearheads beat the Trekkies easily!!
Just think you can actually wear Indy's gear out and it you can actually use it. Try walking the streets dressed up as Captain Kirk!!
I think the Indy's hat care references were placed in the "Army of the Dead" to help the average Indy fan understand that its the same hat from the 1912 Train chase, and explain how his hat is kept in one piece after all his adventures.
As a person who enjoys hats I appreciated the references.

Yeah, I just read this part of Army of the Dead the other day. At first I thought, "Wait, its NOT the same hat--this is DUMB!" But then he added the bit about changing the sweat band, getting it blocked etc. So then I thought, "Okay, maybe it IS supposed to be the same hat." But the ribbon would have to have been changed if its the same hat as "Fedora" gave him in
LC, right? Not just the sweatband--that's inside the hat. Not to mention, didn't he lose his hat aboard the Bantu Wind in
Raiders? You never see him wear his brown hat again after that scene.
Now, we all know HF wore dozens of hats over the course of the four films, but did anyone else out there ever think that we were meant to believe that Indy has been wearing the actual hat Fedora gave him all these years? Do you think that that was Lucas's intention all this time? I never thought that. I always just assumed he likes this type of hat, and he's had a few in his lifetime. Same with his jacket and whip. I've never felt that I was supposed to assume he's been wearing the SAME clothes ALL these years.

Sorry, I didn't resisted to quote this other page of Army of the Dead:
"Indy took his hat off. "Sorry", he said to the hat.
Then he used the awl on his pocketknife to punch a small hole in the hat and the leather sweatband.
He ran a spare bootlace through the hole and tied the hat to his belt on the left side.
(...) and this way he had a chance of keeping it.
His hat guy could fix the hole..."
What??!!
This seem to me really exaggerated.. Not only was written by a gearhead, but is not beliveable at all!

That would completely depend on what part of the country you were standing in at that particular moment.
NYC wearing a side arm like the Smith or Webley? You'd be put UNDER the city jail.
Arizona? Texas? no one would give you a second look.
Kirk outfit with phaser, EVERYONE would definitely notice you, that's for sure. Not sure what would happen after that.
NYC? No one would give you a second look.
Arizona? Texas? You'd definitely draw some attention from the locals.
It's all relative.

Arizona is open carry but I think only with a license. Texas is not open carry, concealed with a license only...of course, unless you're a officer of the law. I sure wish Texas would go open carry.....
And yes, wearing a kirk outfit would get looks, but not arrested. But, heck, wearing a fedora gets looks around here. The only place I've lived that I DIDN'T get looks wearing a fedora was Las Vegas. No one gives a fig what you wear......or do, there.

Interesting. What part of Texas are you in?
I've worn fedoras all OVER Texas over the years, and never got as much as even a glance from anyone regarding my hat.
I guess as one gets older (as I am), folks kind of ignore things like that after a while. Just a guess, mind you.....

Right now, I'm about an hour north of Houston, I used to live in Ft. Worth and up in Wichita Falls.....always got comments and looks in WF, never wore one in Ft. Worth...and the little town I'm in now looks at me funny if I wear a vest and sports coat....so, I reckon that tells you the type of people that live in this town.
I've often noticed that older folk get far less looks wearing a fedora then someone thats 20 or so.....I guess people think, ah well thats what old people do. I'm 28 and still get looks....heck, right now I wear a brown leather DP Scala golf cap and I get comments and looks on it.
I've noticed that in large cities I rarely get looks or comments...its usually in smaller communities....

Indy wears the same style hat, jacket pants etc etc though all the films...I guess we are supposed to believe it's all his original kit (which of course it isn't in reality) despite it being highly improbable after his hat and jacket etc has been shot at, dragged along behind trucks, had stones burning through his bag etc etc. No repair work could compensate for decades of that kind of abuse.
But ten why would he buy dozens of almost identical kit...where would he get it all down the years as styles changed?
Just one of those Indyosyncrasies we love to wrestle with and will never find a 100% certain conclusion to and is part of what makes Indy, Indy. It's just a style we expect of Indy, and skirt over the obvious continuity and plausibility flaws.

My feeling is that half of his gear is essentially military surplus (like the pants, shirt, and bag). These items would have been easy to find in substantial surplus quantities where he could've stocked up on them, replacing items as needed.
Then there's the whole fictitious character thing.

Ummm... that's the whole gag, right? We all know he couldn't possibly have the same hat after all this time, but he always manages to save it. That's the joke. Actually having dialog about how much he cares for his precious hat kind of kills the fun, if you ask me. And the inconsistencies of him leaving his hat somewhere in some scenes, and then inexplicably having it again in a different scene is part of the joke.

What is being debated here? Who wrote that? Spielberg? Lucas? Kasdan? The name 'McCoy' mentioned above? Some other random novelist? If it was the latter, it means nothing as far as 'historical' accuracy goes. Its some guy putting forth his idea about Indy's 'one' hat.
Please forgive me if Ive diminished the importance of an author I know nothing about. If he is truly someone of authority in the Indy universe, then what I wrote was simply conjecture.

Again, I vote for custom work as some of his gear isn't military issue clothing, just military styled clothing. The shirt isn't military issue, the pants might or might not be. He gets one or two shirts and pants made whenever the others wear out or get torn up. Same with the jacket. And same with the fedora. I say the only thing he can conceivably buy military surplus would be the mrk VII except, that wasn't available until WWII.....
