Fall hides?

Post by Indiana Jake »

I would like to try my hand at making some falls for my whips. I think I already have most of the tools in my holster making arsenal. The thing I lack is the correct hides. What is a good type of hide to buy for this purpose and what weight/thickness should it be? My current whips have whitehide and indian tan (brown/gold) colors. I'm not sure if I want to buy an entire hide at this time, so if anyone has some partial hides that I could cut some falls from, and you are willing to sell any of it, please PM me to work out some details.

Indiana Jake, whitehide or redhide (latigo), are all good for making falls. The only thing you should take care of, is that it should come from the best part (backbone and near the buttocks). I myself prefer veg tanned cowhide, around 10-12 oz (for a 1/4" - 6mm point). If you soak it and tie a strand around it and pull it back and forth (after paring its four corners), it will have a rounder cross section for most of its length, than if you just grease it and round it. After you squeeze most of the water out by rounding it, dress it heavily with plaiting soap or some other fat based leather dressing. Leave it for a couple of hours to soak in, and repeat until the fall is saturated with fat. Or, you can just let it dry and use Pecards.

You can get just a piece of hide from Paul Nolan at Midwestwhips. He sells any of the tannages you've mentioned.

Hope that helps,

Aldo.
